Sure, some champions like Swain and Irelia would need a gameplay update eventually, but there are champions are are borderline non-functional due to how screwed up and unfocused their kits are.

Fiddlesticks Fiddlesticks The poster child of fucked up kits. Riot doesn't even pretend to know what this guy is supposed to do. His W says DPS, his Q and E say utility, his ult says burst, and his passive says.... stand still?. Jungler? Support? Mid? Nobody knows, and neither does Fiddlesticks.

Mordekaiser Mordekaiser moment of silence for the mordekaiser mains I applaud an attempt at something new, but when the rework missed he was left hanging without a kit and without a role. He needs a new kit with a focus on being a top lane juggernaut with all of the associated strengths and weaknesses like damage over time, sustain, low range, etc. Also, save the ghost drake for an actual jungler.

Nunu Nunu Sometimes it feels like like playing half a champion. There are plenty of newer junglers with effects and abilities that help them jungle without losing 1/4 (or more) of their power the instant they walk into a lane.

These champions need to be addressed before any others due to sheer lack of functionality and direction. They get forgotten for extended periods of time, and make the game look bad every time they are brought up again.

And who are you to decide these champions are more deserving of VGUs than Swain and Irelia?

Nunu and Morde I can understand, but fiddle has been actually usable at times. Right now he's not good at all, but I don't think his kit is as fucked up as you think. He has CC so he can use his drain for longer, his passive synergizes with his drain and ultimate, and his E is good for extra damage to groups and jungle camps.

Though if Nunu isn't one the next few VGUs, I'll be surprised

Fiddlesticks is not in a bad spot at all, gameplay-wise. He's not good either, but nowhere near as bad as Mordekaiser or Nunu.

While neither Swain nor Irelia have particularly outdated kits or looks, their gameplay patterns are both extremely unfun and unhealthy for everybody involved. They also go very well along with the direction the current story of league is going - as most of it is currently centered around Ionia, the Vastaya and the Darkin.
