Surprised at how fast MMR can swing - is this normal?

So I was going up in mmr by the looks of who I was being matched against in normals - high silver. Starting to see some golds. I was increasing my winrate by one tricking shyvana mostly with 65%ish winrate.

Then I decide to spend a week or two trying out new champions, testing new builds and strategies, and generally just messing around for fun. Losing a majority of the games.

Then I noticed I was being paired against bronzes of varying degrees. So I hop back on old reliable Talon, and try to play serious again, and I've been crushing the past 20 games or so with almost 80% winrate. Even winning with teemo. Mind you, several of these loses were outright someone leaving our team so its 4vs5.

It seems like dropping MMR to crush games would be a good strategy for chest farming.

I might see an occasional silver now. But still bronzes. How long do I have to keep crushing these games before MMR raises me up to mid/high silver again? It's kind of annoying at this point because I dont find this level of play enjoyable. It narrows the spectrum of what I can viably play and win, forcing me to pick hard carry snowballers to overcome my team.

No it's not, the system is busted and riot looks the other way because they invest time in other stuff

half right. they lok the other way, becuase the current system enforces need to grind, which makes people play more, which benefits them. so they think.

I don't know if Dota 2 has changed the way they do unranked MMR - but I know they use to calculate it based on ingame metrics, not just win/loss ratio. Players who had high CS, lots of denies, and placed a lot of wards would have a higher MMR. K/D/A must have factored in too. There are probably other hidden metrics they track for MMR too. I wouldn't be surprised if they even track APN.

Of course, ranked is still based on winrate.

The idea was to try to identify players who were individually performing st a higher level relative to others, regardless of whether or not they won. This makes sense in a game where, unless you're a hard carry you are at the mercy of the competence of your team.

That's why people who carry as support at low elo in LoL say you've got to play like a carry more than a support to win. Making plays. Stealing gold. Roaming ganks. Etc. You cant genuinely play a true supporting role until you reach an elo where you can generally count on your carries to know what the right thing to do is.
