Of those top 20, 7 champions have more than 5% pickrate, indicating common popularity:
- high winrate due to the build and a bug introduced in 6.17, where he can auto-attack despite his ult's intended lockout.
- recently buffed (which was a mistake, imo). Also, always has a good winrate in yoloqueue due to high snowballiness.
- Cancer. Benefactor of the strong healing support itemization after 6.13.
- Barely over 5%. Strong in solos due to waveclear and good burst.
- Braindead easy to play. Counters Yasuo and assassins (popular soloqueue picks) in general. On top, good against immobile squishies, too. Could use a nerf, too.
- Snowbally ADC that profits from the ArPen builds. The only one who escaped nerfs for it, too.
- See Soraka.
These top 20 champions contain 6 top laners (4 are ranged, but none of those 4 is especially common), 3 junglers (2 are ranged, but 1 is rarely played), 5 midlaners (all ranged, but 3 of them are uncommon), 3 ADCs (obviously ranged) and 3 supports (2 ranged and cancer, one is Sion who should flat-out not work as a support (imo)).
Of the 7 common champs, all are strong in their intended position save for Yasuo, who is bugged. Also, if a few of the ADCs have that high a winrate, there is bound to be an equal amount of ADCs that do not feature high winrates - which, as a look on the ADC winrate statistics shows, is also true. The two most popular ADCs have subpar winrates.
Also, looking at popularity:
- 9 and a half of the 10 most popular tops are melee.
- 3 of the 10 most popular mid laners.
- 7 of the 10 most popular junglers are melee.
Overall, looking only at winrate can be really misleading. Champions that have low pick rates usually have elevated winrates if they are at all viable, for two reasons:
-
They are usually played by people who play them a lot, due to liking their styles, and thus know what they are doing.
-
They counter the popular champions and playstyles to an extent, enabling them to perform better than expected.
