I just read what i hoped not to read about Swain rework.

Champion Roadmap: October 2017 - Nexus

> After a lot of discussions, we felt the fantasy of a “ruthless dictator” with powerful dark magic would lead to a more satisfying game experience for Swain compared to his current title as the Master Tactician. [...] In the end though, it felt right for the raven general to be on the battlefield ripping the souls out of his enemies rather than sitting back in a tent commanding troops. <

Even if hoped that maybe with Swain they would refrain from watering down a champion theme in order to appeal to broader/younger audiences... i expected disappointment.

My compliments to Riot games here, because "sitting back in a tent" was exactly what made Swain stand out as a champion, and what made him a true noxian leader. I'll explain myself:

In the lore, Darius favored Jericho Swain's ascent to power because he recognized in him the cunning of a master tactician, and not because his might as a "battelfield soul ripper". Darius didn't look at him on the battelfield "ripping souls out" and said: "shit, i should make this guy our leader. He's sooo COOOOL ripping souls off in the battelfield. He should definitely command our armies". You don't win wars "ripping souls out" on the frontline. You win wars masterfully moving armies in your tent; outsmarting enemy generals; being always one step ahead. That's the non-13-yo way to look at it. As a strategist you don't charge in the fray. We have plenty of champions who do that already.

You lost something that made Noxus look something more than the one dimensional nation on the strong bad guys always fighting. Something very important. Something more than "he's the strongest so must be the leader".

Swain, being an old man and a cripple, was generally considered useless as a soldier by Noxian standard. Sure, he posseses great demonic powers, but it was implied that his double nature was actually a secret. He wasn't of noble origins. He wasn't a legendary war veteran either. So what brought him AT THE TOP OF A WHOLE NATION? Nothing but his own qualities. His competence. He was what Noxus needed most, in a period of heavy losses on the military field. He may be useless as a soldier, as a fighter, as a warrior... but he's the perfect leader. Darius, as a true Noxian, noticed those qualities and supported him openly in his ambitions: he didn't factor in his physical strenght, his birthright, or how many souls he rips out of his enemies on a daily basis.

I honestly expect the new Swain to be significantly younger and not a cripple anymore, which is sad, because it's one more champion falling in the streamline of the target audience tastes. If you try to appeal to the minimum common denominator, the quality of the content you create will go down year after year.

Yeah i think it's a real shame that they always seem to sacrifice the lore of champions to fit their need. I remember when Xerath was a neutral guy who's only purpose was to obtain ultimate knowledge, he didn't even resent those who imprisonned him, he knew he had eternity before him so he didn't care about trivial matters. New Xerath is just the old common boring bad guy who's all about power and vengeance over those that stand in his way, like wtf that is so cliché. He used to be unique and they gutted his lore.

Design wise it is hard to create a tactician champ. Even with Azir, they once said that they weren't satisfied with how he had to enter the fray to perform best instead of sitting back like an emperor while his minions do all the work. I guess it was too hard to rework Swain with the tactician gameplay in mind, so they went the easy route and changed his lore instead, which is a real shame.

Though some of riots new releases and designs have been pretty cool, most of the stuff they have been churning out is so generic and bland that it's hard to get excited about anything new they bring to the table. Sorry to hear about swain. They killed mundos theme as a champion for me so I know how it feels to have one of your favorite champs feel taken away from them. (In mundos case it was just lore though so Swain might be extra tough to handle :0)

Gameplay comes first and nothing about current Swain's gameplay sounds fit for the old lore. His players want to turn into a giant bird monster and sit on people until they die or run, not stand back and set up for other people to do the work for them.

I can't speak for everybody, but i've heard more than one swain main actually say they wanted Riot to deliver the "master tactician" fantasy.

I've literally never heard a Swain player ask for something like that. Every one I've ever talked to loves how his Bird form is 9 kinds of stupid.

Swain player here who played him into diamond: Currently he does have some tactician feeling to him a bit which is oppressive for a lot of opposing players but his high cooldowns and zoning potential is what i like the most about him having to think about when to use which ability for what. That said i'd love riot to emphasize more on the master tactician fantasy. There you heard it guys.

Id also rather see him be a tactician. Wouldent call him a main but he has been a champ I have played for years.

That said i'd love riot to emphasize more on the master tactician fantasy. There you heard it guys x2.

I get the way you feel, I kinda felt that way too for a while. However I think you are misinterpreting Riot's direction with Swain (or at least what seems to be their direction, I don't necessarily know more about him than you do, though as a Swain main I've been trying to keep up with all the info I could get about him).

Swain has a terrible dichotomy between his title and his gameplay: On one hand, in every lore piece we see Swain as a master deceiver; someone who could climb to the top of Noxus out of pure wits and magical prowess (even though JoJ ain't oficial lore anymore, it still is the main source we have for his raise to power, and he does defeat Darkwill's heritage in a duel). On the other hand, he plays like an AP ranged juggernaut/battlemage that can out-duel and out-sustain most matchups not through strategic playing, but by being ballsy and positioning in smart places meant to beefy casters, in which most carries wouldn't stand a chance.

What Riot has done regarding this rework direction seems pretty smart. We only see Swain as a master tactician in lore, so why force that on his gameplay? that would be like taking Caitlyn's title "The sheriff of Piltover" and making her gameplay revolve around catching people and putting them in jail, or taking Kog'Maw and changing his kit into one of a devourer (this is kinda a pet-peeve of mine tho, why does his lore talk so much about his eternal hunger if all he is going to do is barf at people?). Instead, by making Swain stick to his warlock aspect we can still get the best of both worlds.

We actually already caught a glimpse of this. Even if Swain gets reworked to be a warlock, he still behaves in-lore as a tactician. He doesn't rip Urgot's soul apart just because he wanted his position to be available, he tricks him into going to his own death on foreign soil.

One last thing I disagree with you on. Darius didn't support Swain for being smart alone, he got behind Swain's goal because he noticed in him a leader representative of what Noxus stands for: a relentless, powerful leader with a hand of steel and craving for conquest. Actually, Darius hated to see Noxuses leaders turn weasely and weak over time, kinda coming full circle since Kled's lore. We now have another problem: Originally, Swain's magic wasn't as out in the open as it seems to be now. The black rose was a secret faction of mages pulling the strings on Noxus ruling, and they are responsible for bringing Swain to the top. Darius used to be effy about magic usage, and kind of doubted Swain about that. Besides, with Urgot's new lore piece we find Swain weaseling on his way to the top too, so whats Darius take on this?

I hope I got your hopes up with this, I know I'm excited to see Riot's new take on Swain, even though I'm pretty sad and scared to lose my alltime main (at least from season 2 I believe).

Even if they are tuning these parts down, I'm hoping his personality stays more tactical and he stays a cripple. If they keep those at least to some extent then I'm fine with him being a bit more of a lead from the front type of general.

Inb4 Swain is the most handsome guy and rivals evelynn's personality. xD

That is really unfortunate, I always admired Swain's lore and theme as the mastermind of Noxus.

To be honest, I don't think Riot intends on changing anything lore wise too much. It's just that his playstyle will still be more of a warlock kind of feel or whatever. I feel like if they went full on master tactician, which they said they thought about doing, that it would likely alienate most Swain mains.

In my opinion, it is the right call, at least when it comes to story telling.

Noxus is that country valuing strength over everything else, it makes sense that their leader is capable of fighting himself on the battlefield and not just sit in a tent with his maps and knowing everything about war in theory, while being completely lost in the fight himself.

And I think people get the wrong idea here. I don't expect him to be like Sejuani, always leading the fight. But Noxus is operating alot with fear. Join us or get destroyed is kinda their motto. I think that Swains appearance on the battlefield is more like a "big act".

He uses his raven magic. That will be pretty terrifying for any normal guy. Imagine a situation like that:

You are a young guy, you just joined the army recently. You are fighting with your comrades against these Noxians. Suddenly, the sky turns dark. But not because of clouds, ravens are filling the sky. You see a guy in a terrifying bird armor, coming on the battlefield. You just know him from stories, but in the moment he rises his arms, the ravens are attacking you and your friends and you know who he is. These creatures pick out your eyes, rip the flesh from your bones. And you lose any hope to resist their power.

Maybe doing that even takes alot of preparation from Swain, but that doesn't matter. He is just joining the fight to make an example, send a message. Obey my reign, or get torn apart.

Additionally: Noxus is the biggest nation, they got the numbers advantage. If you make their leader the biggest master tactician, then there is nothing to stop him. With that, update, the theme of the master tactician is open again to give it to a smaller nation to fight Noxus with less of an disadvantage. For example for Demacia or Piltover.

They got strength and numbers, they shouldn't get superior tactics on top of that. It makes wars against Noxus one-sided.

They are keeping him as a strategist and a wise omniscient type character.

They are just making him magically more powerful aswell and making him sound a bit cooler.

He'll still be a cunning leader.

They have also stated he will infact be a bit more crippled (with a lost arm aswell) and still be old, if not older, as current swain wasn't actually an old man, he was like 39, it's just his voice and baldness that made people think he was old.

He's meant to be a lot older now, but more handsome, and perhaps immortal given his demonic power.
