What if we didn't nerf mobility

Spinning Axes··3 votes·671 views

Instead, we create a champion pretty much specifically designed to fight against mobile characters.

For one, an ability could be something among the lines of "Deals X damage after Y seconds, amplified up to 3X the amount of distance traveled by the target over Y seconds.

Of course, this is just eyeballing something and definitely could be the active of some kind of tank item, which would be helpful to tanks.

Anyways, thanks for listening to my short little rant, it could probably have been longer and more in depth if I had the time and was willing to try and keep it from dying, but I'll just leave it at that.

that would be great... except that Riot doesn't like that type of things... even though it would balance the game a hell of a lot more but nope. Every champion should be able to do something against every champion regardless of position or anything but how many items they have in their inventory

While I don't agree with your first statement and I think Riot does listen to us a lot more than we appreciate, I see where you're coming from on your second statement. However, I disagree, as if every champion had their counterplay to mobility, then all mobile champs would be weak. We aren't trying to balance out the league just to make it stupidly unbalanced again.

The ability you listed has actually been referenced as something that they don't want to do, with DotA's Bloodseeker having been brought up as the premier inspiration for that particular subject. Also, they have discussed multiple times that they don't want to isolate counters into a few select champions, since it turns into a hard counter situation.

I don't fully agree with their points, but they've definitely rejected this style of thought.

But mobility is counterplay incarnate in league. In general, it makes immobile champions very reactive, waiting for the mobile champs to blow their mobility, or in the case of extreme mobility, waiting for a mistake.

I don't think specific anti-mobility mechanics made available to all would be a bad thing. That said, any one item would be considered instantly OP, as in today's league mobility is so very common that the mechanic itself would be highly valued. Even if you made multiple items, anti mobility would become core to the kit.

Honestly, a specifically anti-mobility counter like this would be too effective to be allowed to be good in any form. Feel that an item that made a field that dis-allowed displacements and jumps centered on the caster would be far better, and yes, I feel this should be on an item. A TANK/Support item that gives no offensive stats. This would even the field and allow those who wanted it access, while not creating a rich get richer environment.

While I completely agree with your statement here, there has to be something done to start to punish mobile champions.

Without doing anything against mobility because something would be instantly OP because it counters mobility means that nothing will get done against mobility, resulting in a downward spiral.

I agree, but the idea that inventing a counter like this is unbalance-able. If you simply add more mobility, then what's to stop mobile champions from picking it up for a "rich get richer" issue. If it is a damage based on how far you move, then whats to stop tankier people from shrugging it off or it being so powerful that even immobile champions feel the heat? Or stop mobile champions from using it on each other?

No, whatever issue exists, HAS to be one that compliments being immobile in such a way that mobile champions don't want it. I did embed my own suggestion on there, though it was kinda tucked away in there.

Think like Maokai's ult, but on an item and all it does is negate displacements/dashes in said area around user. It would need to be on a tank/support item, so that the super mobile assassins with blinks don't want it, and even then probably as an active. That's the only way I really see the idea of a counter working.

Or, or, or, we can embrace the mobility, because no matter what ANYONE says, mobile champions are more fun; see Lee Sin

Balance & Counterplay > Fun.

At least for me.

So you're suggesting an inverse of Hecarim's E? The more the champion moves the more damage they take?

Spinning Axes1 votes

Pretty much, yeah.

We'd need many viable anti-mobility champions for this to work, because bans.

Given that we see only half a dozen new champions a year now, I don't see this as a workable plan.

Spinning Axes1 votes

Which is why the item was suggested - I feel as though it could definitely work that way.

This makes a lot of sense. I feel like it would be a little overpowered if it was an item that anyone could buy. However having a champion with it as an ability similar to Bloodseekers ult in Dota would be good for counter play. It would force highly mobile champions to chose between running and taking damage or standing still.

As much as I used to hate Bloodseekers ult I feel the concept would be a healthy addition to League.

Glad to see positive feedback!

While your at it just add all of Bloodseeker. For those of you who don't know Bloodseeker is a Dota hero who's ult does damage to you when you move while it is cast on you.

In all honesty, I have not played Dota, nor do I have any friends that do. This was an idea that I thought of myself, and if it is the same exact same as some hero in Dota, then I am sorry.

Oh no, sorry if that came off as accusatory. I am not accusing you of copying or basing it off of anything. I was just saying you could add Blood, he might be a little broken though.

What about a new type of cc that just prevents mobility, but doesn't f**k over immobile champs, call it 'Grounded' or 'Gravity'.

As an ability, it could be described like: "X creates a zone at a target location for 1.5 seconds, enemy champions standing in the zone take magic damage and are 'Grounded' (can not use dashes/blinks, but can flash) for as long as they remain on it." This way, immobile champs would have a small window to be safe from mobility champions without it being powerful on anyone in general.

Spinning Axes1 votes

Interesting concept. But think about it - how would this be incorporated without having one ability being completely wasted on a champion? The practical use for this in a champion kit, especially early game, is quite low.

However, I could totally see this happening as part of a passive, or a passive affect on an ability.

It would work like: "All spells that X hits will apply the Gravity debuff for Y seconds."
