The problem isn't damage creep...

It's shield and heal creep. True, overabundance of dmg and burst might have caused this, but after the assassin rework and changes to flat armor pen this isn't the case. Yet we still have items and champions who can just perma shield or drastically increase the strength of the shield. item 3504 item 3174 item 3060 these items increase the total shield size along with a certain keystone and mastery this becomes a problem. Even more so when you get 2 shield supports in a game Ivern and Lulu, Janna , Karma , etc.

You either get unkillable adc's or giant fucking bruisers with twice their hp in shield mowing trough your team. So what do we do to help with this, well we either nerf or give more dmg. See the problem? More dmg to fight the shields, and more tankiness because of that. It's a cycle, and in my opinion the best way to brake it is to make everyhing countered by something, like it used to be with classes.

Before assassins countered adcs and mages, tanks(anything that was durable, before the new classification) and supports countered assassins and tanks were countered by mages and adcs. Now assassins can't burst, adcs can't get trough the shields and tanks can't survive because of so much penetration. Suddenly someone can do their job right and all goes to hell.

We need a new mechanic or a revision of certain aspects. Shields should be a commodity and not something to be spammed. Same goes for cdr, sure make spells do a lot of dmg, but gate them with cdrs. Also mages need more mana items, morelo is too good, so much so that it's overbearing. It's literary everything a mage wants (mana, mana regain, cdr, a lot of ap, grievous wound) it needs to be split up or another item introduced. The ones we have now item 3070 item 3027 are too slow for most or impossible to stack.

Sorry for the rant, but AP has really gone down lately. There is no choice in what to build. You have to build this on most item 3089 item 3165 item 3135.

The basic problem is indeed the DMG creep.

The Shield-Power is just one of Riots failed attemps to fix it! They tried to make Assassins less obnoxious to play against while keeping their precious burst potenzial. And while the idea it selfe might have been a good one (like most times) riot failed thinking it to the end (... like most times).

Mobile Assassins need to be tricksters and should never be able to 100-0 anyone without a huge setup/mistake - than we have to lower the DMG accorss the whole board to make the lowerd Assassin DMG still feel good (they should be kings of burst-speed, just unable to 100-0) - than we can address the shields, maybe creating the enchanter stat by improving the Heal/Shield-Power and granting other Supp Abilities a scaling based of that - than we can take care of real balance once more.

AP Builds are another story. CDR should be and optional Build-Path(although that's harder to balance), Morello is in a stupid state, I dont want to buy the same 6 Items on 10 different Champions. - I totally agree here.

A HUGE part of the recent problems is the game lenght.

While in the past it was completely fine for Carrys to take their time, farm and be usefull at some point - now since this state is nearly unachievable - everything needs to powerspike as early as possible and we get more and more Items to do so resulting in huge clownfiestas where non of the old Rules you mentioned count.

A mage counters a carry? How, against that Lifesteal and MR? A 'ADC' counters a Tank? Ever seen a Poppy VS those earlyscaling.. 'Carrys'? (Mages never countered Tank - btw)

Season 5 had the most perfect Meta so far. Directly after Cinderhulk got its first nerf. That was amazing - we had intensive Teamfights, we had both early and lategame champs, games worth to be in a 10 minute Q, nearly every single Champ was playbale, Each role had actual impact at their respective strenght while not outclassing everything else. And Assassins were supossed niche because of overall bukier teams but had still ALOT of impact when played well #highrisk/reward!

I really whish Riot would start thinking about what went wrong from that point.

Athene's doesn't make your shield stronger except for the AP, and any AP item will do that. It provides a heal to your next shield/heal on an ally based on doing damage. It's also very rarely seen because it leads to CDR overload and only really synergizes with Karma and Sona. Also, why are you listing Banner of Command at all in reference to shielding?

Supports need to be good at their job and they need tools to actually do that job. The role is and has consistently been the least popular and least enjoyed for good reason.

… Also, could you pick a point to focus on instead of derailing into five different ones at random? Is this about heal/shield supports, or CDR, or specifically Morellonomicon, or lack of flat mana options, or mage champions themselves, or…?
