So, if HP is a strong defensive option against both AD and AP
Why is
cheaper than
?

Because just straight hp isn't a good tank stat. Without resistances, you will just die instantly. % hp damage is great against those kind of builds
Because MR and AR operate in percentage reductions, while HP is flat.

Doesn't change the fact that you're possibly in the same boat early game with buying either item. What I mean by that is you'll probably take the same amount of spells to die buying either item. Needs testing but it's just a thought.

That's early game though. That pricing becomes more relevant as the game progresses and you want the percentage reductions more than the flat HP.

It's also worth noting that %health and true damage are both things.

something like that. of coarse their actual value defense wise will change depending on the state of the game.
Null magic mantle offers 25 MR. that can be thought of as 25% effective health against magic damage.
at say, level 1, your starting health may only be 500-600. which would result in 125-150 effective health with the MR, compared to the flat 150 HP you get from ruby crystal. (which is effective against both physical and magic damage, and slightly cheaper)
HP is pretty good early game.
Early game Health>Resistances Late/Mid game Resistances>Health Anyway, its never good to build just resistances nor just health. To get the maximum for your gold, you have to buy both health and resistances.
Because 25 Magic Resist is currently more expensive than 150 Health in gold efficiency and 25 Magic Resist has more early impact than 150 Health.
That's actually mathematically untrue for a large number of Champions at level 1.
Its strong because its cheap Its also strong because it doesn't specialize and does well against mixed damage but builds into less silly items bon its own
Long story short, Health is more effective in the early game because every champion starts with defensive stats. As the game progresses, resistances become exponentially more valuable.
Good stuff guys.
