I'm kind of curious as to what Riot is doing with Malzahar

In the case where they want him to stop being a support, they could easily put more focus into him getting the cs for himself For example "When a voidling kills a lane minion, it's timer is extended" or "it grows, gaining health and damage" or "it frenzies, increasing it's attack speed"

In the case they want to pull him away from being an "ult Bot" they would need to move the power into his regular kit, but that's common sense
