Lore Q: Do Darkin Care what their host is?

I mean, obviously they would care some it needs to be able to wield them.

But if a Darkin decided to be a magical laser cannon the only real requirement would be that the host is big enough.

But other than that i noticed that all 3 Darkin so far have a "human" host, even though runeterra also has vastayans, yordles, voidborn, and different kinds of demons, some of which would arguably be better hosts than humans would.

And that's why i was wondering if Darkin preferred human hosts, or if there was some reason they could only use humans or something.

Well it's kinda like this, if you were trained as an ace fighter pilot, while you probably could drive a car or boat very well, why would you chose any profession other than one that involves planes?

The Darkin were once humans that upgraded to similar but superior forms. They could infest the other Runeterran races but there would be a learning curve to how that species body functions.

They fought the voidborn in the lore, it would probably be pretty traumatic to infest one of those. Assuming they could even hold a weapon, most of them couldn't.

Demons are... weird. Shaco is a toy, Evelynn is a shadow blob that chose a slutty form, and TK is... a fish.

I want to see the biggest, baddest Darkin... in a yordle body. Who complains about it on the regular.

They used to be human, after all. They prefer and are used to human hosts.

I don't think their preferences would override their desire for a useful body, though. It's possible that they simply haven't encountered a non-human who they wanted to possess.

I assume they all have preferences but beggars can't be choosers so i think they'd take what they can get

I'd assume it's because humans as a species are fucking idiots, and are usually the least magically-inclined of any race in a fantasy world.

Yordles and Vastaya and demons all probably sense that it's a Darkin, and know the penalties that would bring. That makes it much harder for the Darkin to tempt them into picking up the weapon. Humans are greedy, arrogant dumbasses, though, so not only are they generally too stupid to know to resist it, they may deliberately try to wield the Darkin for power or influence or because they're arrogant enough to think they can control it.

For the Voidborn, however, you have to note that the Darkin are fallen Ascended (We know this from one of Riot's recent stories). They fought and went mad against the Voidborn. Odds are they can't or won't control the Voidborn.

So I assume it's less to do with the form (Although they might prefer humans individually, and for the Voidborn it's just a can't or won't), and more to do with the availability of people to possess. Humans are more common and more likely to fall for it, so they primarily get humans.

Vastayan is a possibility, since they're mortal beings, and they have human DNA in them from their mixed past. However, other things like Yordles, Voidborn, and Demons operate on a completely different level, with some ingrained magic that may be detrimental to being a host. For instance, the Void and Demons are constantly in need of sustenance to survive, so that rules out the Void as an effective host, and the Demons begins magical beings may also affect their capabilities. Same with the Yordles too, they're questionable in their permanence and physicality in the world, so their magical nature wouldn't make them suitable hosts.

What I'd like to see? A child with a Darkin weapon. I think that conflict of interests would make an insanely good character for the Darkin, who has to war with wanting to be free versus corrupting a child.

I think the main reason for this is that unlike humans, the other ones (exxcept maybe the vastaya) have lived long enough and remember the darkin and arn't stupid enough to pick up a glowing, red and black weapon thats been locked away somewhere (except varus)

From Kayn’s lore, it says he killed the darkin’s first host, then was spoken to by Rhaast Rhaast’s line was “Who will prove worthy?” This could mean they don’t care who is the host, considering the first one was a weak Noxian, or that they do care who the host is, which is why the Noxian died, as to let Kayn take the weapon.
