A Sadfaced Support's complaint

For about 5 years now, I've seen new champions introduced with significant skill ceilings, innovative and high-impact abilities, and exceptional outplay potential. Only one of these innovative, skill-expressive champions went to Support and that was Thresh, who came out 5 years ago. The Support champions released since then have carried either shallow or outright simplistic play patterns, and I'm honestly tired of it.

As a support player, it's frustrating to see the lion's share of innovation and skill-expression continuing to iterate and evolve in every other role but your own. You see new champions and reworks come into play that fit this criteria nonstop - Zoe, Azir, Fiora, Gangplank, Irelia, Taliyah, Ekko, Kalista, Jhin, Xayah, Kai'Sa, Yasuo, etc.

With almost every new champion or rework, the design team proves time and time again that they have good ideas to keep the game exciting and evolving, but that emphasis has been ignored for support champions for almost 5 years now.

There is so much potential to create champions that emphasize disruption over damage in new and interesting ways, and the community has been demanding it for awhile now, with how much hate shields get. There are so many other ways to support other champions outside of spells that just instantly throws phantom hit points onto them. Whenever I see yet another key disruption ability given to a damage-oriented champion, it just feels like a slap in the face to supports.

I would kill to have a support that had the ability to throw up a Yasuo windwall, pick up extra summoner spells, throw a Fiora riposte effect onto an ally, or throw down an disarming barrier. I really don't get why all of these innovative abilities are going to damage based roles. They are already getting the means to gap close, immobilize, and kill people - why do they get unique, high-impact disruption abilities as well?

If you keep handing high-impact disruption abilities to all the other roles, what's going to be left for supports? More shields? More stat-deficient active items? More heal spells?

Nobody likes playing against Soraka, or Janna, or anyone else that solves burst damage with a simple point and click spell - Just like nobody feels good when they get one-shot by a Syndra pressing R on you. You feel like you got outplayed by a spell's design, rather than the actual player piloting that champion.

The support role badly needs an overhaul. I can handle not carrying every game I play, but I think that all roles deserve the chance to participate in the mastery and outplay portion of this game. I love this game, but I've grown tired of seeing these dynamic mastery champions getting released for every other role except for mine.

I'm starting to just be over this whole issue honestly though. It hasn't changed for 5 years, and it's not showing any signs of changing any time soon, so I wonder what's the point of complaining about, or even continuing to play this game, if this is just the status quo for the foreseeable future.

The trick is to say "screw you and your 'meta', I'm going to play (annie/brand/lux/leblanc/...) support"

Then it becomes fun again, and you can steamroll your enemies.

That sort of thing is how sion support became a thing. Which is very strong in the right hands.

Yeah...most supports being used now days in my games are not even actual supports. And when you face them with a actual support it just makes the game tougher.

Besides the ones you listed I see a lot of VelKoz, Anivia, and Veigar supports. I even see Tham Kench used more top than support.

I just had a game where I went soraka and the other team had a Fiddlesticks support. We did win the game but it was purely because the other teams arguing with each other in all chat. but before they started arguing we was getting stomped.

I'm fairly sure bard came out after thresh and falls into the high skill ceiling category. Rakan can be pretty spicy too.

More supports would be welcome though, but since any champ can build almost any item, theres always concerns of "well if they can do this neat stuff on a support budget, imagine what they could do with a carries budget!" and then people take them to a solo lane and they may or may not be balanced there or even end up primarily being played there.

Bard came out after Thresh, but he has essentially one combat spell, his stun, which is insanely basic. Outside of that, most of his combat time is spend auto-attacking whoever is directly in front of him.

Granted, there are times where Bard can display precision with his ultimate, but those moments can maybe happen once or twice in a game, whereas a high-impact champion like Thresh has the potential to do it as often as his hook is off cooldown. Even when you see someone as good as Aphromoo pull out the Bard, hes not making nearly as many plays each game as another professional would on a champion like Thresh or Blitzcrank.

The poster above mentioned Rakan: what about him?

actually, bard has the hidden attack spell of his meep passive. When he builds up chimes, he has a LOT of burst damage.

Bard is overall a macro oriented champion, whereas thresh is a micro oriented champion. That is to say their natural play styles are very different, with thresh seeking to outplay and disrupt opponent in his location, and bard seeking to out-position, flank and bait.

That you don't see what afromoo doing on bard as a "play" is simply because your perception is limited to only seeing "skill expression" as things that happen in a small area. Dodging a skill, or finding the right timing for an engage, you count, but being there with 2 team members where and when you're not supposed to be, you do not.

That being said thresh is a high skill cap champion and I wish there are more champions like that in league in the support position. Right now (with 1 exemption) the ability to affect the mobility of allies is the nicest tool in the support's arsenal, and I would like to see more champions built with that idea in mind.

Only one of these innovative, skill-expressive champions went to Support and that was Thresh

And what is Rakan, to you? And maybe Tahm isn't "skill-intensive" (few Tanks are), but it was at least "innovative", you can't deny that. EDIT: I see that someone else also mention Bard, and I agree with them.

On the other hand, I agree with that other quote:

Why is Jhin on this list?

Josh Sand1 votes

I included Jhin on the list because there is a lot of skill required to play him to his highest potential. A good Jhin player can land long range skill shots into fog of war, and thread ultimate shots through tanks onto vulnerable targets. He doesn't have any real built in escapes though, so most of the fights he initiates requires a pretty precise calculation of who is where, so that he doesn't get killed. A lot of the ADCs now have some measure to get out of a small jam, but Jhin doesn't have that luxury. He's one of those champions where you can clearly tell when someone has put a lot of time into him.

Bruh I'm being honest: You might as well quit. Outside of potentially one new support a year, Riot has no plans on any major overhaul of any existing supports. To boot, the ideas they work with when designing supports, in comparison to the type of utility abilities you see on solo laners...eh...Idk about 'em. Rakan was a good addition, but Bard and Kench? Ehh...EEEEEEEHHHHH...
