Systems in place to deal with Toxic players, but no support for those damaged by them?

Brascus··38 votes·3,546 views

There's a lot of talk about dealing with the players that cause damage, but what about the people who receive that damage? Could a system be engineered to help players after being abused for 20-60 minutes? It could be key to stopping the negativity snowballing into other games.

Riot Report : Our data shows that the majority (77%) of abused players are support mains. Reported to be abused by their ADC 92% of the time. A staggering 44% of these ADC's are Vayne mains. The abused claim that they were continuously harassed for 'not peeling'. Numbers may vary.

I actually have an anecdote for that where a jinx harassed a blitz for screwing up which demoralized him, perpetuating poor performance. He almost uninstalled but me and another fellow were there post game to cheer him up, I played bot lane with him and he did great knowing he could play however he wanted. We lost that game, but that was because top became a michelin chef and fed enemy team like grandmas sunday roast, all in all he got a ton of assists and kills till top lane decided to put a stop to our shenanigans.

Nicely done . Keep it up sir :) .

Another 30% of abused players were found to be jungle mains who were primarily flamed for not winning a laner's lane for them through repeated ganks, or alternatively for taking dragon or ganking another lane when they should be counter ganking for top/mid who didn't ward.

They also need to fix the underlying causes of toxicity. Punishing it is great and all, but it doesn't stop it. You're just going to have more toxic players come in to replace the banned ones (and the banned ones will create new accounts). Riot needs to address why players are toxic. Why might a player that's normally not toxic in other games be toxic in League?

Lyte did a couple of talks at a GDC explaining their methods and experiments to help understand why players behave the way they do. Turns out the racists/sexists take up only 1% of complaints and it's the average gamer that received enough negativity to go on a rampage perpetuating a ripple effect of negativity.

This is probably a good question, and I do think the snowbally-ness of encountering other toxic people might be the answer. But I've always had the opinion that what you see is what you get when it comes to toxicity in League most of the time, AKA toxic in league, toxic in other games, and toxic in life.

Unfortunately Riot can only do so much in this regard, but to their credit they do make a small effort (like hiring people with behavioral science degrees to look into stuff like this.) Back on the old forums I would go to the "Tribunal" section of the forums a lot and participate in discussions sometimes, often with people who made the "why was I banned" posts. Then Lyte or someone would come in there and post how toxic they'd been and the excuses would start flying. But here's the thing, I think a lot of those people believed those excuses were legitimate, they actually didn't understand a reason for their punishment. Tons of people literally just weren't taught appropriate behavior, they take their frustrations out on other people, they don't understand what anger is or how to cope with it responsibly or healthily, then they grow up and vote for Donald Trump.

Yeah that was a joke and a pretty long setup, but if you actually think about it, it's completely accurate. There's a bunch of people out there who are ANGRY, they feel like they're being punished, singled-out, or mistreated and so they pass this on to others because for some reason humans think that doing this makes it ok. It's not, and responsibility starts the moment people have this specific epiphany.

Lol, sorry, those people actually end up voting for Obama and Clinton. People don't like Trump because he has the balls to say what everyone else is afraid to say.

But other than that, you do have that right idea on everything else.

"Having the balls to say what everyone else is afraid to say" would be an admirable quality, if it were the truth that gets said. In his case (and the case adopted by his supporters,) it's not truth, it's blind anger, and very often a misrepresentation of facts. You don't have to take my word for it btw. Politifact goes a long way in backing me up.

What he says is the raw expression of how people feel. It really is the same symptom that I described above about people who rage and are toxic in a video game. That's why I brought it up tbh. Trump and his supporters would rather vent about a problem, and deflect the cause of it onto someone else than lift a finger to participate in a team effort to overcome it. Theirs is an entitled position of irresponsibility. That is the real truth that nobody has the balls to say.

In League of Legends when you rage at your own team, you're competing against 9 people instead of 5 and advocating only for yourself. There's a certain socio-economic philosophy which teaches the same thing, that we must compete against everyone else and we must be our own advocates and that teamwork is unnecessary or somehow a bad thing to participate in.

But you disagree, you feel like you're right so you accuse the people whom you perceive as your "opponents" as being the ones who do the "bad thing." This isn't different from blaming your teammates for a mistake in League of Legends. Try thinking about it from a less self-focused approach, something like: "I'm on this person's team, what can I do to help them?" Instead of "this useless idiot just lost us this game and now I'm getting punished for HIS mistakes."

BTW I'm not here to debate politics. However, when it comes to politics I try to operate based on facts, not feelings. I suggest you and everyone else do the same.

A misrepresentation of facts? And you're gonna trust a "truth-o-meter" that's a project of a Florida newspaper and its partners? Oh, that is adorable. Listen, if we're gonna start using sources, how about you collect facts from both sides of the aisles and from real, reliable sources?

You are right on the socio-economic philosophy of how teamwork is somehow being taught as a bad thing. I don't see it as a bad thing, I just see it as something non-existent in some of my games because, despite my best efforts, there ARE idiots who throw the game for you, there's nothing you can do, and you DO get punished for their selfishness and stupidity.

Politifact is a non-biased source. Politifact exists solely to separate fact from fiction, to educate people on the difference between what is truth and what is lies, and the things they do are sourced appropriately and well documented. I can't collect facts from "both sides of the aisle" because facts don't exist on either side of the aisle because facts don't take sides; they simply exist, and are true. I have never in my life seen someone argue against truth and win. Keep that in mind for the future.

This raw expression of how people "feel", huh? Tell me: Would you say the same about the "Black Lives Matter" movement? Because that's exactly what comes to my mind when you talk about people venting about a problem rather than fix it.

Yes that is also an expression of how people feel. Society (like a League of Legends team) will never work as long as people simply blame others. It takes work. My point is that just because someone points it out doesn't mean that they will do the work necessary, and it doesn't mean they're the best suited to do it either. Right now, Americans are so stupid, and have been so brainwashed, that they think identifying a problem and pointing fingers at the people who cause it (whether there's proof of that or not) is how problems get solved. It isn't, and identifying a problem isn't a special skill that only certain people possess, and therefore isn't particularly laudable.

People (and I'm being equally accusatory here) don't understand the problem solving process, they think it goes like this: "Identify the problem, remove the (thing that I think) is the cause = problem solved." This is only true to completely naive individuals who vastly oversimplify everything, because they are uneducated (or misinformed) about that which they speak. They don't understand human motivations, don't understand why society exists or what it's role is, don't understand how government and legal processes work, and don't understand that even if "removing the cause" were a simple easily executable step in every instance, and did happen to be the magic solution to every problem it would still leave everyone affected by the problem until now with no resolution and no help, which would mean those people would carry that baggage into the future and start the problem all over again, thus nullifying any "progress" or "solution" and very very possibly make the problem worse. Personally, I don't want these shortsighted, one-sided, un-researched solutions, and no one anywhere should settle for them.

Education is the only answer, and that will never happen when you pick and choose your "facts" to back up your biased opinion that only exists because of your pre-existing feelings, (which were more than likely "taught" to you by family or social conventions influenced by your environment, who you come in contact with, and where you are getting your information from.)

This is sadly true, but if you decide that you can't beat em so better to join em, you're making it worse for not only everyone else, but yourself as well because you're inadvertently teaching others to behave this way too (you're passing on the anger.) A lot of people make the short-term decision to do this just to "feel better" right now without realizing the consequences of what they're doing and how this will only guarantee that this continue to happen to them in the future. Toxicity breeds toxicity. And keep in mind this philosophy applies to life as well as League. Be the better person and take the L (or punishment) with dignity and an attitude that says "I'm not going to become a part of the problem, I'm going to become a part of the solution, even if I don't like how that feels right now."

But to compare a group of toxic gamers to supporters of a rising, political candidate and then say you're NOT here to debate politics is just silly. You should know better that this is the Internet. Soon as you mention anything remotely political, someone is going to respond. Btw, I do operate on facts, not "truth-o-meter" websites.

I only respond to you and therefore "debate" because of how wrong this last statement you made was. Would you prefer if instead of citing Politifact, I just cite the sources that Politifact gets their information from (and cites) instead? Are those credible? If you can't identify a well sourced, well documented fact as a fact because it disagrees with your feelings/beliefs/bias you're hurting everyone you have any influence on, and you're teaching ignorance. I'm sorry but that's the way it is, and ignorance is something that I personally believe should be destroyed mercilessly, because it is harmful to believe untruths, and even worse to propagate them.

Donald Trump's attitude is toxic, his supporters are toxic because they learn from his example and pass the toxicity forward, this is EXACTLY the same way that toxicity in League of Legends spreads, and before this thread it hadn't even occurred to me. that's why I said what I said, it really is an uncanny comparison. He does make some valid points, but they can and should be made in a better way, one that doesn't accuse and mislead people. He won't do that because he knows that people are emotional beings and he can gain support by appealing to people's feelings, especially uneducated people who are unwilling to consider that they may be wrong about something, or that they might be being played for fools by someone more intelligent than them. You could make the argument that all politicians do this, and that is probably close to the truth, but the ones who do it shamelessly, and angrily, and harmfully are the ones least worth supporting.

I fail to see how his attitude is toxic. He's only being seen as toxic because he's aggressive. If you bite him, he will bite back harder. If it were as bad as you and the "truth-o-meter" says it says, why, his supporters would be acting just much like the Black Lives Matter supporters. He's gaining support by appealing to the truth. People are going to him because of that and because they're tired of politicians. We don't need another Bush, Clinton, or Obama. We need someone who can get this country back on track, not some politician that'll just mislead us.

Because if we're not gonna put Trump in, who will we?

I find in many of my games one player will instigate negative behavior (ie "this adc" after adc is dove and killed the 2nd or 3rd time, or "how are you so bad at such an easy champ, rito match making gives me noob team again") and people who may be having a bad day or have been putting up w/ that kind of behavior and rudeness for multiple games that day suddenly react poorly. This begins to escalate as the team starts arguing, and suddenly instead of one or two comments from someone who should have better manners, but is less polite because of internet anonymity and lack of repercussions, there is instead a toxic game w/ multiple people raging/flaming each other.

That and riven mains who don't get ahead early and blame their noob team.

it's strictly because when you play a game of league of legends, you are basically committing yourself to the next hour. Even though most games are 30-45 minutes, when you hit play most are assuming they have at the very least an hour to complete the game.

Losing in a battleground in wow that takes 5 minutes because of a troll, sure that's annoying. Maybe losing a game of counter strike because someone sucks? That's maybe 20-30 minutes gone. Lost at call of duty? Np 10 minutes tops. Most of the time, you really don't care THAT much because well it didn't last that long.

A game like league is totally different. It's just more frustrating/infuriating to lose a game that took an hour to lose than one that took 10-20 minutes (not talking about 20 min surrender vs an hr loss).

I saw a video a few years ago when this was talked about why mobas attract toxicity, and it's mainly due to the long game times. IDR how he put it.

Thinking about this again, maybe there needs to be an (optional) option box that you can tick if you felt damaged by this game session. Another thing I keep thinking about is wanting to collect all the evidence of their abuse and post it on forums for closure.

There definitely needs to be a message in the game that says: "perstering players perpetuates poor performance".

This made me think and I was like "I feel like that whenever someone blames me for losing the game, especially when I know I did the best I could and the enemy team was just better or my ADC was just not doing well." The difference is I only feel like I'm being treated like dirt for the duration of the game, sometimes extended into the post-game lobby, and then sometimes carry that over into the next game, but then it ends. Everyone has bad games and the issue is that people being toxic to you makes you have to worry about it for far longer than it makes any sense to do so.

I'd never heard of you, but you mentioned that there were videos so I watched some. Apart from the few instances when you said "kill yourself" or "this x player should die" which you should never do, I don't feel that you're super toxic, it seems to me that your experience isn't very different from most people's, except that you get perhaps more angry than some. You seem to have an ok grip on when things are genuinely your fault, and that's the thing, most people do and we don't need our so called "teammates" to constantly remind us. I think the key to being less toxic is to just stop caring, which isn't completely possible but it's at least a goal to work towards.

You are right. I just have all chat turned off now and i mute ppl. It's hard to change my way of thinking. I'm so use to the eye for an eye attitude so when ppl attack me I usually retaliate. I'm not a douche. I am generally a nice person. I actually want to help ppl. But I don't have a grip on my anger when it comes to other toxic ppl.

I genuinely hope that this can be an important step in you having a better experience playing League of Legends. I feel like when I "learned" to care less about what happens in games I started enjoying the game more.

Sure people still blame me (and sometimes I deserve it.) Sure I still get pissed off occasionally, and still report people whom I feel genuinely deserve it, there's a lot of angry people out there, but if you can somehow learn to curb that a bit, at least you're no longer one of them and you don't spread it to anyone else, and that's worth it.

This is an interesting Idea, I just wanna know what kind of system that would be. I feel like if it were like therapy that would just be weird. Also how do you mark yourself as someone damaged by toxicity?

Brascus2 votes

The short answer is I don't know; which is why I posted an open ended OP, to see if anyone had any good ideas. I guess we could start with some questions like - After an abusive match:

  • how do you deal with it?
  • what do you want to do, as opposed to what you do do?
  • what would you want people to say to you?
  • do you want other people to know that you've been wronged?

For me my greatest frustration is not knowing whether or not this person will be punished in the end or how, if at all.

What I'd really want to do post game is be able to screencap everything they said and did, then post it on forums for review, but there aren't any immediate post game tools to do that, you have this pent up frustration you need to get out and there's no where to channel it.

Tails Doll1 votes

Personally, I believe something that stops LP decay due to trolls/afk/feeders would be nice, maybe if they punish a player in a losing game they give some LP back to the other 4 players? I mean that could work, maybe half the LP they lost? And MMR too for that matter.

AthenasVendetta2 votes

It would be interesting to try to create a system that actively notices verbal harassment and abuse and offers automated support... like the shop keeper or announcer.

-For example the system notices X player abusing verbally and feeding, the system automatically sends automated messages whether voice or written in the chat box or both saying things like: "Don't worry, you got this!" "Hey good work man" "Keep it up, we got them where we want them"

Meep Man2 votes

This could be cool. One thing they could is reward you for reporting someone that gets banned so you get that recognition that "They are going down, I'm going up." I feel there is a lot of other ways to do this too, but thats what popped into my head for first thing. Helping lessen toxicity is good.

The main thing I worry about is Riot hates rewarding players with anything but End of Season Ranked rewards typically.

I think it's a nice idea although I'm not sure what Riot would do.

However, I think the other side of rager punishment we're not looking at is what happens after Riot bans a rager...They end up leveling as smurf from 1-30 being even more toxic than before which kind of screws over anyone who wants to pick up the game. That is incredibly important and if not fixed might end up causing League to stop growing.

Häßlich1 votes

Part of me is tempted to create a smurf account and see how long it takes to get banned if I'm toxic in exactly 1/5 games... Or 1/3, or use varying degrees of toxicity for the test. The scientific curiosity in me wants to test this system, but the half way decent human being in me doesn't really want to subject so many other people to it either.

Hmm...

Uhhh , ... Well , there might be a way out of this . I believe it's the community job to solve those morale damages , like a forum for those who suffered incident with toxic players . Riot already has it's hands full , so why not us make the change . Who knows ? Riot might even support it if this becomes "a thing" .

This would just create a new more annoying problem. I don't know what kind of support you think Riot is going to give, but it will just encourage people to get even thinner skin about things, and then League turns into Tumblr, where everyone will jump at the smallest thing to get pissy over and the report the hell out of them.

Posting evidence of abuse on forums for others to review is very gratifying and brings a lot of closure but there aren't any immediate tools post game to achieve this without screen capping while it's happening pulling focus from the game.

in all reality, unless we see the specific person who trolled us banned, it won't really be closure. The system already bans people who are overly toxic. So people are indeed getting banned, but we just don't notice because league is such a massive game.

There really isn't much rito can do other than ban the toxic

Ah yes, we shall do what universities are doing now and create safe spaces for players to retreat to after being triggered. In this place you will be forced to play a match against bots with URF mode unlocked only for your character and when you win they will praise you like a king.
