Quick Reminder: ARAM Bans are a stopgap.

ModCaptainMårvelous··27 votes·9,257 views

ARAM Bans do not solve the problem of ARAM. They lessen it a little but it does not solve the issue.

Let's take a situation where we can ban 10 champions. However, with 140 or so in the game, we're banning around 8-ish percent...IF we don't get duplicates.

Now let's assume 50 champions are good in ARAM. Let's also assume we ban 10 of them. 40 champs left....40 that the enemy owns because it's an ARAM account. Maybe 50 or so total?

At the end of the day, Bans DON'T solve the issue. Bans are the scraps Riot is throwing people to justify keeping this shitty system in play. This has been the case since ARAM existed: ARAM accounts will always have an advantage that cannot be circumvented no matter how many limiters are put in place. ARAM will forever be one-sided until Riot finally stops tiptoe-ing around the solution and actually puts it in place:

#Either unlock ALL champions for ARAM or the problem is not solved.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Get these fucking Fiddles, Luxs, Ziggs, Sivirs and Ezreals OUT of my game.

Unlock all champions. Remove rerolls/bench. Remove trades. Now we're at peak random.

Rerolls/Bench/Trades are fine. You're still drawing from a very small pool and a LITTLE bit of certainty isn't killingthe mode.

Would you rather:

Keep rerolls and bench so people can do something other than dodge if they roll Volibear?

OR

sit in queues for 45 minutes because of everyone dodging. always?

OMG who is dodging Voli in ARAM! He's my 2nd highest mastery with minimal effort. Buff your w with a mog and it's pretty much GG

I threw a name out there for "not a ranged burst champion" because that's literally all the ARAM accounts are - burst mages, a couple ranged assassins, a few adcs with high burst potential, and maybe a support or two with really good ap ratios.

Trades have always been part of ARAM, since it was a custom mode. Otherwise, yeah, I kinda agree with you.

Except ARAM accounts don't exist in noticeable amounts. It's a bit sad to see a Moderator ---someone who should set a positive example for the rest of the community--- propagate such myths.

agreed, I know people who don't use their aram accounts anymore at all because they like getting random champions... It's sad to see people that lack any creativity ( when engaging ) they don't know how to deal with these champions they just give up... ive went like 4-12 as like riven or renekton because I used my windows of opportunity to engage/cc someone and my team would kill them ( i'd die ) then they'd push and we would win... people just want to cling to their KDA even if it cost them the game.

How exactly do you deal with an artillery mage?

dive them, they have no escapes... a good snowball/stun combo will delete them... watch their positioning, they will almost always get cocky and overextend... watch their habits, if ziggs is using his spells to clear waves his/her behavior becomes predictable, once you're in melee range they are done, unless they have peels... Is it always gonna work across the board?? no but if you are playing to set your team up and take them down to push it's pretty easy... The problem with this strat is so many of the fighters on your team want to just cs instead of looking for windows of opportunity...

Yes they do. At least in the upper tier of ARAM where they've climbed with high win rates. I had a top 0.7% ARAM MMR according to 3rd party (not exact, but still gives an estimate), and there were accounts in nearly every game. It's easy to find them just by looking at the match histories of people that roll free week/OP champions in your match.

Riot won't unlock all champions in ARAM, because more accounts = more skin purchases. Adding bans makes it look like they care while stilling pulling in the money, which is all they want anyway.

Saianna4 votes

I agree with you, heck I agreed with it 10 minutes after ARAM was made an official mode. But tbh I don't expect much from Riot considering how little they care for things they already copied from other games implemented.

  • Lootboxes - botched - hextech chests are a really gated chore.
  • Account levels and champion crates - a chore
  • Champion mastery - pointless empty chore, where Riot obviously didn't consider to add anything for people that commited their time and effort to "master" a champion.
  • Champion scores - still needs tweaks. Minor ones, but still.
  • Daily Quest - botched - only there when there's some event and then you get flowers such as "play with a guy that bough 10$ skin". At least there's second option to finish the quest. Or "watch our pro games"
  • Champion price cuts - when was the last time some of those champions had lowered prices? In 2015?

It doesn't take a genius to figure out all the bad things. All you gotta have is some common sense and lil bit of care for the game. They threat it as a soulless product with "if asian market likes it, we won't bother to change it" attitude.

unlock ALL champions for ARAM

Gotta disagree here. I get the idea but some people see aram as a casual mode and because of that, there are champions they do and don't want to play. Tanks are a great example. I'm not fond of playing them. If all champs are unlocked and I get a tank there's 20 minutes of my life where I'm not happy playing LOL. Or I have to dodge and I really don't want to do that.

TBH I think forcing people to play more crappy champs they hate playing is just going to kill the mode for them. Let's say there's 20 champs a person enjoys playing. If all champs are unlocked that means that 85% of the time you are getting a champ you don't like playing.

Akali is SO HOT3 votes

Tbh as long as I never have to play against Veigar, Lux, Ziggs, or Xerath I'm happy

ninjaroxas3 votes

nah im fine with just bans, really dont want all champs unlocked since that puts people in the position of having to play a champ they dont want to more often. i grantee you dodges would happen more often

BackdoorPrincess2 votes

Then don't play the random mode if you don't want to risk getting a certain champ? The fact that people can just not buy the shit tier aram's to just null the chance of getting them is more of the issue. Dodging exists if you really despise that champ but it's time to make it truly random, not "the 20 champs I bought+free last week and this week"

ninjaroxas1 votes

why should they listen to what you want over me? have you maybe considered more people like it how it is now? if you dont like the mode then dont play it yourself then. you can also just leave the game if you dont like the teams if you wanna use that kind of logic.

SanKakU3 votes

All champions is bad for both the new player and Riot's bottom line. They have less chance to get the champions from the finite ARAM free to play pool which means less frequently they can play something they are familiar with. It would also mean unlocking a permanent game mode where they technically have access to everything.

The better solution has always been to grant everyone access to 'ARAM only accounts' which means giving us champion randomization control pools. IOW, let us edit a list(only before searching for a match) of champions that are randomized for us individually.

I by far play aram more than anything anymore, and have been sitting at (by a third party) a pretty high mmr bracket, and let me tell you the amount of games that I don't see at least 1 level <70 aram included in the name/club is pretty low, and that's just the ones that make it obvious. I'm in favor of bans if nothing else to just negate certain cancer champs (because who doesn't love getting quarter healthed by a kai bolt from halfway down field after her first item) but also because I'm tired of seeing the same champ 5 games in a row on the other team. Unlock all champs, do whatever mastery point shenanigans you have to to make it so people will still want to unlock champs (as in no mastery for not owning, keep the speed of reroll gains the way that it is so it still is faster the more you own). Snowball was a great change to the meta to make a lot of tanks more viable when it was first introduced, super happy backtrack didn't stick (same for the 6 seconds no death item) and the warmogs change makes fighting the entire tank squad a lot more bearable, but when you have a certain pool of people who only have the aram-god tier champs unlocked(plus f2p), combined with champion weighting in the random mode, it gets real obnoxious real quick if you're someone who plays with nearly everyone unlocked

The fine tuning going on with certain champs makes them a lot less of a pain to deal with, and would certainly help balance them into not being banned all the time, but it also makes them super confusing to bring from a normals to aram, as now you have to check a chart to see whose damage has been buffed/nerfed to ensure you aren't building them in a way that won't work (as in the recent gutting of ap maokai combined with the range damage nerf). Possibly have a little disclaimer above them when rolled that says whatever aram specific change they have so that you don't inadvertently pick sona hoping to heal/shield and seeing that it's nerfed even harder than just the -50% already.

Someone having aram in their name/club does not make them "an aram account", given the definition is an account specifically with only good aram champions. If youre high in mmr, chances are youre playing against other players that play more aram than anything, which would likely lead them to include it in their name or club tag, similar to if you main a champion, youre likely going to buy their skins.

Fact is "aram accounts" as described are near non existent.

because admitting it means admitting there's an issue.

Except nothing points to it being an aram account. An aram account has a specific definition, not just someone who plays aram primarily. I play aram almost exclusively, yet my account is not an aram account. Ive had numerous aram club tags.

I have played over 2000 ARAM games and I would GLADLY trade any limb to purge Veigar or Lulu from the fucking game. I don't give a fuck if I have to fight Brand/Fiddle/Whatever the fuck, because they have counter play despite being annoying as fuck. GIVE. ME. BAN. PURGE. MIDGET. MAN.

Silent Crescendo2 votes

Opening up all champions to all players also doesn't solve the one-sided issue, but it's a far better step forward. I've owned all Champions since Season 6 so it doesn't impact me, but there's really no downside to it. I'd like to have bans as well until they actually start dealing with the seriously frustrating/game warping issues though. As much as they don't want to, they need to actually hit the kit issues the outliers have. The poke shield and Warmogs changes were good, but they need to do more of that- as well as numbers tweaks for things like CC or specific problematic spells (Illaoi E for example.) Some of their % tweaks are good, but some are absolutely nonsensical and are causing plenty of new problems. Kai'sa, Aatrox, Shyvana, Akali, Kassadin, Evelynn, LeBlanc, Zoe and Nidalee are nightmares and I don't know why they're allowed to be.

A rioter already said internal play tests showed that wasn't a perfect solution for your so called issues either. Plus it'd come with other costs they aren't comfortable with.

I agree, but the fact Riot hasn't done anything, and it's still doing nothing about it, is really worrying. Guess they endorse Aram-only accounts.

There aren't 50 op champions in aram, there are maybe 20, removing the 10 worst problems is still better than doing nothing at all.

I agree 1000%, bans are a bandaid and the real solution is unlocking all champs in this mode. It is honestly mind blowing that riot has not done this.

ARAM ONLY ACCOUNTS are a fallacy and do not work. They are played by bad players looking for a shortcut and complained about by players who don’t know how to counter. The same rules apply as did in season 1, and still to this day, so many people do not realize that if you run past the tank and blow up the squishy you’re so afraid of in the backline, then you don’t need bans. Period. This is how League goes down bad rabbit holes. By catering to inexperience.

I think if we could select our bans pre champ select (like selecting roles), I'd be okay with bans. For me it was just annoying to have a pre champ select phase that really I didn't care for at all.

You must not play much ARAM. And you must be the guy who thinks attacking the backline is impossible. While peeling of course. But I've been playing for 8 years and I still see the meme "Stop attacking the tank" happen over, and over, and over, like a broken record that never dies.

You must be the guy on the boards that makes assumptions to justify himself. If the carries do their job and there's equal CC to the number of divers, you aren't getting past the frontline for free unless you're playing something with insane engage.
