10 Ban System Explained | Pros Vs Cons
The 10 Ban system Riot has recently implemented has caused quite the ruckus.
As per usual, no experimental tests from the board's community have been launched so all complaints are attributed to theoretical possibilities. The reactions of the boards may change when the system hits the client.
Here is what the 10 Ban System theoretically imposes as an issue: • Duplicate bans that would be a waste • Inability to tell Riot that X Champion is horrible as there are also other problematic champions. If you have a duplicate ban, you could say another champion is really bad to play against[Banrates tell Riot how the community views a champion]. Essentially, this comes down to the powers players are attributed. • Inability to ban other champions one dislikes when the other team bans a champion[Convenience] • Inability to see the enemy team's bans[Links to the second and third point] • If X champion is banned virtually every game, it's a problem with champion design.
However, there are notable counterclaims to those points:
-
Duplicate bans happen when two parties unknowingly agree that they do not want a specific champion. If this happens, it is due to both parties noting the risk of a duplicate ban happening. They acknowledged it and decided to ban that champion. This is saying they took into consideration of the calculated risk. Rather than letting the enemy team ban a possibly OP meta/frequently banned champion and banning another champion instead to increase the ban pool, they decided the risk was not worth it. They decided that X champion is a major threat they would not like to play against and is higher on their priority list to ban. Hence, since they decided to do that even while noting the risk of a duplicate ban, then they should not complain. They acknowledged the possibility. Besides, duplicate bans still allow you to ban the same champion.
-
Duplicate bans will tell Riot that more parties dislike X champion. Thus, banrates will be much more informative on just how much the player population dislikes X champion. You still have a voice.
-
Nobody can deny there's a possibility than all five bans for both teams could be duplicates. However, be rational for once. In an experimental test, what are the chances of this ever happening? This probability would be so minuscule with the champion pool and unique thoughts humans have — it would be rare to have.
-
Why see the enemy bans when you guys are already having five of them? There is now a range of five to ten total bans. And it will still always most likely be a minimal of six or seven. Everyone on your team has a voice. Everyone on your team can ban X champion that they dislike or do not want to play against. Everyone can take the calculated risk.

If X champion is banned every game, I totally agree it is an issue with champion design. However, Riot does not want X champion to be banned just because another player banned a champion the original player felt was more tilting than X champion to play against. Nobody here wants to see "Oh, you banned this champion so thanks for letting me ban this champion" because that causes a significantly large amount of issues. For example, what happens if you could see my bans? I ban Yasuo, you ban Sona, I ban Lulu, you ban Caitlyn, I ban Draven, you ban vayne. Etc. Then afterwards, you have to remember players do not have all champions in the game and autofill exists. Thus, they may not have a suitable champion for that role. THEN YOU GOT TO REMEMBER, people can lock-in a champion to take that champion away from you.
So tell me, is the 10 Ban System really bad theoretically? Or is it actually just a well thought-out system that we can give a chance for experimentally?
