How do I counter a Thresh/Kalista bot lane?

The Great Divide··4 votes·7,256 views

I've played against a Kalista/Thresh bot lane twice (only twice, thank the Lord), and it's the most miserable experience I've had. Any tips out there to manage the lane and come out with a decent amount of cs (what champs you should take, what laning tactics you should use)?

Honest answer: You don't. I have even seen pro players on their streams admit this.

Streamers aren't intelligent people. That's my experience.

There is a significant difference between a pro streamer and a regular streamer.

Rand0mH3r0X1 votes

Differences: The amount of time they're on The cost of the Gaming Equipment Squinty Eyes Cost of the Camera Amount of Babble Amount of Beer/Alcohol Responsiveness to Chat Amount of Begging for Subscribers

Call me mean, or rude, but the top 2% of streamers are very different from the other 98% by those mere differences. Money is money though.

So you don't think a pro player MIGHT know a little bit more about the game than other players?

Rand0mH3r0X1 votes

That can be said about anybody. I'm talking about streamers not pro players. Besides, a smart pro-player wouldn't call out things like Kalista-Thresh because then what would they lane as? That's like a mid main complaining that Fizz's hang time is too long and that his AA shouldn't happen until the animation is completely over.

Quick Fact: Most people bind "Hold" to a button on the side of their gaming mouse so that they can cancel their own animations and chain them quicker than would normally happen. Animation cancelling is not cheating, and is sometimes referred to as weaving.

Do I find pro-players to be dumb? Some are smart. Do I find pro-player streamers to be dumb? Yeah, a lot of the time. They talk non-sense 100% of the time and their crowd licks the gum right off the streamer's shoes, metaphorically.

So how do I find that the skill of these people lacks anything at all? Because the lower 98% of players severely lacks any skill, competency, or decency. A pro-player at this point is someone who is the top of the severely lacking, between the top 2% and bottom 98%, and people who play games for a living, albeit LoL, DoTA2, etc...

But who am I to call people dumb? Nobody really. I'm just a mechanical engineering student with an unrelated degree in manufacturing. Dumb is a consensus that I feel should be shared, but typically isn't. You don't share the same definition of dumb as I do, so I understand that you don't agree with anything that I'm saying.

Caitlyn counters Kalista pretty hard. Cait absolutely out ranges Kalista, and can land a ton of free poke. Pair her with a utility support such as Morgana or Janna , and Kalista and Thresh won't even get close.

Graves do pretty well against Kalista too if you want someone more close ranged. Put her with someone with strong engages such as Blitzcrank or Leona and you will be able to 100-0 Kali before she even puts a spear in you.

I don't understand why people are saying Leona

Leona can do it, but it's not easy. A good Thresh can completely stop your E with his, and Kalista is hard to hit with your E in the first place because lolfreepositionpassive (Such a great idea btw Riot /end sarcasm)

Things get a little easier at 6 but until then, it's not so easy.

Thresh+Kalista has so much crazy utility and damage (I blame Kalista moreso than Thresh, but they're both kinda insane) and I would just pick another tanky support so you don't get bursted and so the adc has some peel. Try Alistar Nautilus Braum Leona . For adc... whoever you're good at.

Fuck the meta up its ass and go for weird shit that makes their life miserable?

Use champions that can poke them non-stop from a safe distance, you may want to alter your role/lane positions, take an unconventional ADC that can go top or mid and make your bottom lane two mages or something, maybe mage+support mage.

Azir+Anivia bot? Welcome to hell!!

Ahri might also be nice.

either go for a heavy early killlane like Leona +Graves and kill thresh, he's rather squishy early on and kallista can't save him pre 6, or take a poke lane. Kallista thresh have no sustain and not the best waveclear, champs like Cait or Corki can use that to their advantage. Another option would be a hyperscaler like Kog and just play really save, but you need to be good a getting CS beneath the tower for that, and your support won't be able to roam past 6, as kallista+thresh can easily dive 2 vs 1.

You cry and hope they show some mercy and not kill you.

Ban Kalista. Problem solved. Seriously, she's stupid and ban worthy, especially if you know you're bad against her.

Abyssphere2 votes

To be quite honest, you're not supposed to counter that lane.

Wait it out she eventually falls off if she can't snowball hard enough.

For a support, a more unconventional pick would be Taric. Hes pretty good against thresh in lane and his stun is really nice against kalista. Otherwise Nautilus isnt a bad pick, or Lulu if you want to bring more utility. Im not sure which adc is good against both Kalista and Thresh, but my guess would be Lucian

Morgana if the player is good landing the shield, which negates the hook. alternatively, tank supports are good vs hookers (champs that use hooks )

I have yet to lose lane with this.

edit: we're just talking about normals, right? xD

What do you normally play as or whats your lane? Since depending on what you choose can change the whole landscape of how you play it.

The Great Divide1 votes

I tend to cycle through mid, support, and jg, but I adc every now and then (When I adc it's either trist or sivir. I thought trist could work cause ultimate safety adc, but your rocket jump can only save you so many times)

Onegarion2 votes

Sivir the best you can do is just forever push the lane and focus on not getting caught. Your goal is to early on make them lose as much CS and harass smart. You are sivir and you are great at pushing in the early game where other ADCs struggle to get the lane rolling and csing under tower. While any good bot lane can CS under tower no problem, this is solo q so many times supports and adcs don't know how to work together to CS so putting them under their tower can be a huge benefit. Its also good to note that forcing Kalista to last hit with E is a small victory for you. It makes her burn her mana even if its slowly. I recently played with a kalista that used E only to last hit and it kills most of your aggression levels when she is very oom. At the end of the day though you are sivir and you are looking for mid-late game fights where you can influence heavily.

Tristana you need time to ramp up. Play around your support and follow up with what they do. If they go all in you don't have to follow if you think its a failure, but don't rocket jump in. Save it to rocket out and if Thresh hooks you don't freak out and instantly rocket jump since most of the thresh players (myself included) look and listen for that rocket jump sound to cancel it out. Try to wait until he uses flay or walk out if possible. You have a bit of an advantage on Kalista because everything you do is just clicking in that you have no skill shots. This gives her advantage in her passive less strength because you don't care about it as long as you can point and click no problem. Know that as Trist your goal is to destroy towers. This should be your main focus because you make towers look weak. Your E is great for killing towers and its also great for harassing. Never force it, but if you can get 2 shots off on a target with E you deal a lot of damage for what is a rather little investment. SO focus more on what your support does and how they play when against this matchup and taking towers as Trist.

Last note: Bush play is huge in fighting Kalista because she has to see you to hit you. She can't cancel her auto which makes it so if you dodge in and out of vision through brushes you can lower the amount of AAs she can get on you for Rend. Its something that is hard to do (I can't say i even think about it during the moment), but can stand to give you a HUGE advantage on reducing her damage.

Hope this kind of helps with some info that you can use to better play this matchup since I didn't go too in depth as I could have

Too aggressive early game for anyone to handle. Draven scales into late game if he gets early kills as well.
