"Grow thicker skin"

Your average, juicy, classic, post game chat where 2 people are going at it - and of course this phrase comes up.

Because one person steps in and says something like "hey let's not call people autistic"

To which there is that reply: "This is the internet. Grow thicker skin or leave."

I don't think people realize that the behaviour of "I should be able to insult all the time, other people need to grow thicker skin" won't cut in the real world for a hot second.

In the end - someone's "thin skin" isn't the problem, it's you being an ass.

The funny thing is you probably have the thickest skin of the lot because they're over there going "fuck you" and then "Nobody tells me fuck you!" back and forth. Thick skin means not letting things outside your control bother you but they sure let a lot of things bother them.

People don't quite understand that thick skin isn't about out-insulting the next guy. It's literally the opposite, because if you have thick skin you wouldn't even waste your time typing back.

I couldn't disagree more. And the world stands behind me. Insulting whoever you feel like is your own choice, and nobody can do a single thing about it. Nobody cares about your feelings. They are YOUR feelings. YOU are the only one who can change them. Life isn't a walk in the park, so stop expecting it to be. Thin skin is a very real problem. Have you ever considered the fact that the people who insult you might have a reason for choosing you to insult? Maybe you didn't do your job? I'm guessing you got triggered by a teammate calling you out, a few words went back and forth, before your teammate took the usual step and used profanity. You then made this post, hoping for sympathy from the community. Am I close?

Life's tough if you're not tougher. Deal with it.

The problem is the "grown children" of the world never realized that the internet actually became part of real life. That there are real people on the other side of that monitor and the only reason that they feel like they can say these things is because they're nice and safe in their musty-ass room or apartment to feel like they're Superior to anyone and everyone else just because they lack any need to care how others feel. The same kind of people you can find picking fights on any political post thinking that because they are immune to getting angry over it (usually because it doesn't affect them) they are clearly the more sophisticated and intellectual being. There isn't a problem with needing to grow thicker skin, there's a problem with needing to develop some actual empathy when interacting with anyone on a social service be a game, media, or even just commenting on something.

Can it not be both?

I can get being overly-aggressive as being a problem, but it's an equal problem if you legitimately get "hurt" because somebody tells you you've done something significantly stupid, especially if they're right about it.

Pretty sure the "real world" wants you to sport a happy-medium, not just be either huggy-wuggy or low-brow Neanderthal all the time.

Your toxic bickering and trash-tier insults do not add to the enviroment. Your words are basically a stinking fart that you intentionally let off into the league game every game, because you don't see any reason why you shouldn't ruin things for the people around you. If this were private property, the owner would kick you out and permanently ban you.

OH WAIT, IT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Funniest thing about it is that the "this is the internet" is just a made-up excuse to justify behaviour. People forget that some things like the threat of life, racism etc can, and depending on the victim likely will, still result in potential lawful investigation.

"This is the internet" counts nearly nowhere, only on sites that have no clear rule of the ranges of social interactions such as 4chan have that abused excuse and even there exists a level of monitoring and limiting it's far reaches.

People who insult then say "get thicker skin, this is the internet" are the epitome of ignorance, people who think freedom of speech equals freedom of consequence. God I hate these kind of people because they think they can do whatever they want and once things go south they turn into the biggest crybabies you could ever witness. In other words, 5 out of 6 of those "my ban was unjust" posts or the newly trend of "Riots support system sucks" posts are precisely these people who faced well deserved retaliation for their behaviour.
