How to Cho'gath like a pro

So I theory crafted a few cho builds awhile ago, and just noticed this past week one of them being used in pro scene in Korea and had to smile about being ahead of the curve again. Anyway, the two builds are below - one for tank cho, one for bruiser/ap cho (tank one was used in lck game recently). Note - they are not on newest patch, so path may be SLIGHTLY different, but core portions are the same.

tank cho: grasp, demolish, conditioning, overgrowth; overheal, alacrity

bruiser or ap cho: comet, ult hat, absolute focus, gathering storm (scaling) or scorch (laning phase); overheal, alacrity

Why? Cho's passive combined with grasp gives him insane lane sustain. Overheal let's you maximize this by turning excess healing into a shield. This means that stuff like ornn's w (from the lck game) barely scratches you through your shield rather than take a big bite out of you. Similarly, stuff like comet sion will be meaningless poke damage - bouncing of your "shields" so to speak. The minor damage you do take is more than healed by your passive as you continue to push and kill minions, grasp stacks, and any defensive/regen items you have such as doran's shield.

Comet is also great with cho since you are almost certain to land the damage. Since you can combo your abilities so well, it also means you will quickly exploit the cdr component of comet - readying another one sooner than it's normal cd. This, combined with the shields you are getting for killing minions WHILE you harass your opponent (no need to choose one or the other) makes trades go more in your favor than one would expect from a cho'gath so early on in the game.

For the solo queue players who want to go completely ham as tank/bruiser cho, try a build like the following to maximize use of your overheal: item 3146, item 3001, item 3151or item 3165 , item 3110 item 3075 . It gives great tankiness, you have engage via gunblade active, and while you lack the regen from warmogs, you have sustain via gunblade plus your passive. Your damage is more than enough to make opponents reconsider who wins splitpushing, and what little you sacrifice in teamfight tankiness, you make up for in damage... on abilities besides just your r. Note, that build is for grasp cho - going bruiser or ap cho means other item combos are better, but you get the picture. Have a great day ya'll and happy feasting.

It helps with last-hitting early on. People used to take a bunch of attack speed on their runes, this kinda gives you that.

Also, you get pretty tanky so soaking up some cc of the enemy team is a good thing - keep it from being used on your carries. And if you do go gunblade, it means more damage and more shielding via overheal. Really nice for getting off your 3 hits of e fast too.

Your core is abyssal, liandri's, plus armor item. The other stuff is kinda up to you and should be adjusted based off opponents. I'd get gunblade first or 2nd item so long as the early laning phase shows you will be safe to do so - you are pretty squishy rushing it, but if you are winning/going even, it's usually ok; otherwise skip it. Resistance item for lane matchup is bought 1st or 2nd depending on if/when you buy gunblade. Then get liandri's followed by the other resistance item (abyssal or armor item). End with resistance item you need most. At least for tank cho that's how I go. With item 3075 vs sustain-based opponents in lane as my rush armor item or item 3110 if I need the mana and they my opponent lacks strong sustain.

It does take some getting used to the gunblade, but once you to it's pretty fun and not half as troll as people would think. Good luck.
