@Riot: Can we discuss Thornmail, or is the community going to shoot me down again?
EDIT: Yep. Shot down again for mentioning the word.
Thornmail, I feel, is an item which could easily have better implementation, but has barely changed since League was in beta. 100 armor and damage reflect make it an inferior item to other armor choices, but its thorns effect is kept only to deter 5-physical compositions, something I feel goes against Riot's current desire for strategic diversity.
The fact that Thornmail lacks good counterplay doesn't help its cause either. The moment you get a Thornmail, your opponents are unavoidably punished for attacking you. Sure, they might outheal the thorns damage or resist it enough so it doesn't matter, but it's still punishing them for being aggressive. And you aren't actually outplaying your opponent by getting lifesteal or magic resist; you're just getting into a stat-war with them, which no one likes. Don't you think that qualifies as toxic nowadays?
But this is all 'broken record' stuff, so I'll get to the heart of the matter: Should Thornmail stay in LoL or face an eventual replacement? If you try to keep it, will you make it more dynamic (i.e. thorns as an active instead of as a passive)? If you remove it, what would you replace it with?
And will the community downvote the crap out of this topic just for trying to talk about Thornmail? Probably.
