@Riot, Us East Coasters Need To Be Heard

I need a red or somebody at Riot worth a damn to read what I have to say.

I'm going to be blunt, I absolutely HATE the ping on the east coast with a passion. I didn't use to have it as much as I did before (It was palling before, but I never hated it), but after playing on LAN I'm just questioning why they have a better ping (20-30) then East Cost (90+).

Do you have any idea what it's like to try to dodge or land shit when your ping fucking skyrockets to 500? And all the "pros" on the west coast complain about 50 ping?

You guys are honestly pretty pathetic, you're a multi-million dollar company and you've yet to even try to fix the ping for us east coast players which has the absolute LARGEST POPULATION. I can play Smite which doesn't even make half of the money Riot makes and I can NEVER lag on that game.

The million or so dollars you put in the LCS can't go to getting us East Coast players a fair ping. I just don't get why one of the most popular games has some of the absolute worst pings of any game I've played, and I've played a lot of games with horrible ping. How much could it possibly cost for you guys to just get a fucking server farm on the east coast?

You don't want to split the community? Then move your server farm to the middle of the U.S so we can have a fair ping of about 50 or so at least that's bearable. You say you want all your players to have a fair experience but you put your server farmer in the most idiotic area (California) in the country.

Honestly, I would LOVE for a west coast player to spend 1 day with east coast ping.

i swear i dont even care about asking riot anymore. they have shown their disgusting amount of disrespect towards us already every day with these "server changes" which is always helping the west coasters more. watching streams where high elos complain about 50 ping just makes me want to punch them in the face. knowing that i can never do the flash insec lee play pisses me off more than anything. my ping is at a constant 120 average basis and ive learned to deal with it. but these server problems and random dcs when my entire team is moving around and typing just exhausts me. i dont htink riot cares. other threads have been posted about how riot does not seem to be interested in something that doesnt earn them money. soon this thread will be deleted by a rioter and another person will come again and beg for east coast servers. pretty soon tho this game will get stale and the east coasters will decide to not play this game anymore then riot will start regretting their stupid decision to ignore us.

thats a lie about smite. Their servers are constantly lag spiking at least multiple times a week. But yes you're right. they have USA east servers and I get godlike ping there (under 30) they need to relocate LAN to chicago. Then I'll be happy.

The answer is another question: How does one accomplish low ping in an internet game? Network Architecture.

If they put the server in Chicago, YAY, you're physically closer to the server... but if you route through a switch in your ISP's network that is congested, just like it is now, your ping won't improve.

Put the server in Boston! YAY, you are SUPER close to the server. You are on the other side of a critical node, traffic has to route around the state to get you there.... ping improves slightly.

Even if Riot moved the server tomorrow, if your local internet architecture is poor, your ping would improve marginally. Anyone that has ping problems I always suggest taking a laptop to somewhere with free wifi and test your ping, see if it improves. Do a tracert from command prompt, look at where the longest hop is. Dollars to Pesos says your ping isn't suffering due to distance to the server, it's suffering due to connecting hardware, which may or may not be bypassed by a server migration.

Why is LAN better ping than NA? Run Tracert to it, you'll see. Connecting architecture.

I appreciate you taking the time to type all this up but it still doesn't tell me why my base ping has to be 95-105 while people on the other side of the country are getting 20-40 ping as a base value. Moving the server is an attempt to make that base ping fair to all consumers rather than heavily favoring people on the west coast and central US. The problem you're talking about is related more to spikes and instability, I expect? In which case that problem affects everyone. I appreciate Riot trying to fix that, it's obviously a problem, but it's a separate problem entirely from what we're asking here.

Oh, hey, I can answer this! So imagine a freeway. If you look at a map, you're able to see the locations of where you can go, but what is the efficient way to get there that avoids the most traffic (Amount of info passing through certain junctions and distance tend to be huge factors in determining ping.)?

I highly doubt Riot has invested resources into trying to route people effectively to their farms in California (I'm probably wrong, but it certainly doesn't sound like it), so your ping is going to suck.

If you were trying to get all jiggy with it, you could potentially cut down on your ping by routing yourself through certain junctions via... settings? Not a major, I took a class a while ago. I'm sure you could Google routing yourself through efficient junctions to get where you're going faster.

Hope I helped!

I imagine my connection is fairly efficient. 95-105 ping is expected and reasonable considering the distance between Virginia and California. That's why I want the servers moved somewhere closer.

A decent thought, but Riot refuses to deal with its community, which is a problem that will only get worse for them if they keep up this Iron Curtain. I personally hope that one day you and I will have a level playing field, but for now, I'm going to go play some Smite. Never have because it killed off Tribes: Ascend (R.I.P. in Peace), but I think I'll give it a shot.

Your answer is pretty humorous. To say this is strictly an architecture issue shows me that you might be fresh out of some random store front IT school... Although architecture is one cause of latency, 98% of the issue is distance.

Please do not tell me that my ping would be "slightly lower" if the server was located 20-100 miles from me vs 3000...

Explain this one to me. I live in Myrtle Beach,SC. My ping to NA is 124-135, BUT, I connect and play on EUW with a 110-120. Now, when I turn my VPN on ( IPVanish ) my NA ping goes into the mid 80's, which is a vast improvement over not using it. It just stumps me as to why I get better latency to EUW over NA, unless I use my VPN.

Atlleast give us some updates about it. I'm done ranting my frustration about it so Im just gonna wait. It doesnt make any difference, theyll just keep ignoring these until they've made some progress

UWOTM8? Ok, at this point in terms of being a good company, HiRez is having Montezuma's Revenge all over Riot's face at this point with their free gem giveaways, actual REAL balance changes that allow more than 20% of the gods to be viable 80% of the time (I've only encountered one god getting Olaf'd so far, and that's Bastet, RIP in Pepsi) but their servers are arguably worse than Riot's if you can believe that. I'd much rather play on East Coast shit ping where if the planets align properly I start of with 80 ping, and most of the time it's around 120, than on Smite's where I go from 55, to 150, to 350, to 450, and keep going until I hit the 1K mark. It happens every day. So while I think Smite is definitely better treated by the devs than League is, they could definitely use Riot's resources to get better server maintenance.

i feel like if they did have the resources tho, they would help out the east coasters, too bad riot doesnt have the same reasonable mentality.

Riot's top priorities:

  1. Not tell us about anything because they want to coddle us. Which is dumb.
  2. Build suspense for the East Coast server reveal by not talking about it and pissing thousands off.
  3. Build a meta around 17 champions. ...
  4. Revise priority list end

It's why I'm not spending a single penny on RP from now on, and I encourage everyone to do the same if they're affected by this issue. Speak with your wallets! What good are skins if you can't play the game on an equal footing?
