Bought a chest.

and got only a skin shard. nothing else. is that how its supposed to be? just a question here

You can disenchant the shards for essence to unlock the skins from shards you actually want. EX: I got Battlecast Cho, a wukong skin (Orange monkey one), and a ward skin. Disenchanted the wukong and the ward skin but held on to the cho. Now I have a bunch of essence that I could choose to unlock the cho skin with or I can wait til I get a key and see what my next box holds. It's a gamble man. Want a particular skin? Buy it. Want to gamble? Get a mystery skin or hextech box.

yea, every chest contains shards only. Got to complete it so you can get the skin. It is just another way for riot to make money while keeping players playing.

bruh. the free chest i got had 2 shards and essences.

Because it was a free promotional chest (if you noticed, it was purple. The normal chests are blue)

The free chest that was given was a special premium chest, there are types of them, not sure if all of them went live already though.
