Rune Page Rework Suggestion >> Doran's Forge
Imagine you could craft your own 8th item in League of Legends. You could design it, give it the stats you want it to have, choose from existing passive and active effects, allow for later upgrades and unlockable features. You could awaken the Rioter in yourself.
And of course, you could name it:
Noobslayer42, Ahoy!
Wouldn't that be awesome? (cough and complicated)
Well then come 'round, readers, and listen to my suggestion:
#Doran's Forge
As the name implies, it would be related to the master blacksmith of Runeterra, the one and only Doran. He decides to make you, Summoner from a far away land, his pupil and guides you with instructions and materials to become the best of the best of 67 million other pupils. But don't worry, nobody knows what they're doing yet so you'll have good chances.
Now, Doran already made three items: His Ring, Blade and Shield. If you're familiar with these you will also know about how strong your items can get. But the better you are, the stronger they can be.
And similarly to these items, you also start with three basic schemes: Blade, Shield and Ring.
They're all similarly strong, they just look different.
Here's an example scheme:

You see, it has 20 slots (black circles) and fives links (dashed circles).
In each slot, you can place a Rune to give your item bonus stats. However, you can also buy materials to place over multiple slots and gain unique effects. That's where the link comes in handy. Imagine you have a material that needs five slots in one line, but it itself only has two. You don't want to give up three slots just for a UNIQUE passive. You want to make Noobslayer42, Ahoy! as efficient as possible. And so you put the material over the middle of the shield scheme. It takes up the two slots around the middle bit, and the link, in which you can't place Runes.
Each beginner's scheme has 20 slots and 5 link.
However things get a little more complicated than that, because there are also Rune types and slot types. You can't put a Regeneration Rune in an Offense slot. As well as the other way around.
Materials don't care. With enough duct tape you can put them over any slot (and that way you can gain new types of slots, if you don't like those your scheme innately has). However you can't put a material over another material because you ran out of duct tape on the first one :/
So have another look at the shield scheme:

D:
Something changed!
You now have 12 Defense slots (green), 4 Regeneration slots (yellow) and 4 'free' slots (black).
Now you can only put the right Runes into a matching slot. Free slots are variable. You can put any Rune into them.
The Rune types are: Offense, Defense, Haste and Regeneration.
Offense: Attack Damage, Armor Pen, Ability Power, Magic Pen
Defense: Health, Armor, Magic Resistance
Haste: Cooldown Reduction, Attack Speed, Movement Speed
Regeneration: Mana, Mana Regen, Health Regen
And of course there are also double runes, and triple runes, and hybrid runes so you can make all sorts of effects.
The Blade and Ring schemes have similar builds, with 20 slots and 5 links.
More possible schemes are: Pendant, Armor, Staff, Bow, Chalice, Crystal, Book, and of course anything else you can come up with.
Here's an example scheme:
So first of all, this is obviously a bad scheme. I have no Armor whatsoever. I took Health Regen for whatever reason. I threw in four Magic Resistance Runes.
Whatever. Let's just assume this is for Leona Support.
I put in a cross material that has four Defense slots and four free slots. However, I can only use the defense slots because I put there free slots over links. The material effectively looses one slot in any other case.
The material grants me a UNIQUE Passive - Block: Blocks 2 (+per Runes used) (=6 in this case) damage from champion basic attacks and single target spells.
The Health Runes (12) grant me 144 Health, as each one grants 12 Health.
The Health Regen Runes (4) grant me 4 Health Regen per 5 seconds, as each one grants 1 Health Regen.
And lastly, the Magic Resistance Runes (4) grant me 6.4 Magic Resistance, as each one grants 1.6 Magic Resistance.
So the item looks like this:
Common Sense - Ward of all Evil
- 144 Health
- 5 Health Regen per 5 seconds
- 6.4 Magic Resistance
- UNIQUE Passive - Block: Blocks 6 damage from champion basic attacks and single target spells.
And this replaces your Rune Page.
With the right setup it can be as good as a common Rune Page, or even far better.
Players have room to experiment and adjust themselves to their role, champion, team, and enemies.
This Leona would take a lot of damage from minions and the enemy Marksman, but not so much from the enemy Support.
Still, she needs Armor.
Here's the Blade scheme:

For a Marksman:

(just imagine the Hearts are Armor this time. I can't find any pixel armor art ...)
Pointy Edge Forwards
- 4.8 Armor
- 6.4 Magic Resistance
- 10 Attack Damage
- 3% Life Steal (the wrong-way C)
- UNIQUE Passive - Duelist: Basic attacks against enemy champions grant 5% Attack Speed for 2.5 seconds. This effect stacks up to 3 times.
I don't know. It also seems to be a bit bad. But that's probably just my fault, because of how I made the page.
So anyhow. How do you like the concept? Number can always be adjusted. You can come up with all sorts of materials. And there are also runes that take up two slots (they still have to fit the slots) to get bonus effects.
Thanks for reading ^^
