Ravenous versus Titanic: state of the Hydras?

We've seen many Fighters on the light side abuse Tank/Juggernaut items recently. As far as I can tell, even champs like Riven who scale hard with AD now build preferably Titanic over Ravenous (even though I didn't see a lot of Riven recently, I may be wrong...).

For me, the difference between the two was that:

  • Titanic was better for fast auto-attackers and people who can apply on-hit easily but don't really scale with raw AD (and so tend to build more HP to scale Titanic on-hit).
  • Ravenous was better for AD-casters that scale more with raw AD, but don't really apply on-hits (even though the presence of lifesteal seems to contradict that).

So, am I wrong, and who's still building Ravenous today? Is the item ever used at all? Do you know any website with item data available, so we can discuss based upon objective information?

Its core on Shaco Talon Rengar Pantheon Khazix Fiora MonkeyKing Riven and tiger Udyr and many attspeed champs, like Trundle and Xin, use it very well also. Ravenous is used by alot of champs. Where are you getting that Riven builds titanic over ravenous now? Not true at all, The Ravenous hydra active is core to her combo. Titanic is never built on her...

Well, I did say I hadn't seen a Riven recently. Dut I did see some Fiora and Trundle, and they all went for Titanic, not Ravenous.

I've not met Xin building neither Ravenous nor Titanic, it's usually more AS items and Defense items. And for Pantheon, doesn't he build Black Cleaver into Tank or semi-defensive items like Sterak?

The difference is this.

One desires Life Steal with AoE Damage.

One desires Regen with HP and a smaller AoE (Cone) Damage.

Very rarely is either ever WRONG, but each has their own unique circumstance when they are 'more right'.

Anyone that can use one Hydra can use the other to a benefit... the question is which benefits that Champion MORE.

If you build more Off Tank to Tank, you want the Titantic Hydra... as it scales Damage off of HP. If you want more Raw Power, you go Ravenous, as it adds more AD.

A Titantic Hydra on a Low HP Champion is dumb, as you are wasting the Potential Damage... thus you go Ravenous.

A Ravenous Hydra on a High HP Champion is not dumb, but at a certain point of HP you will lose Damage to the Hydra thus the Hydra is more efficient.

So in reality, the Champion doesn't even matter... it's the Build for the Champion. Say you are playing Riven. Seems like Ravenous works better for her. But say you face a Counter, and now you are having to build Defensive to live in Lane. Well, since you are buying HP instead of AD, you should likely swap to Titantic for THIS SITUATION.

That's what is so beautiful about having BOTH Hydra now. Because each has a 'better choice' for each Champion, but in a pinch where you are having to adjust build the other can certainly be substituted.
