Why Are Ranged Champs Allowed To Buy Melee Items?

I just dont get it. How can ranged champs even use this stuff? Do they just launch it from their bow lol..

I always thought they were some type of augments or enchantments based on that item that applies to their weapons and armour when they purchase it.

I know Rengar players used to buy it instead of stattik shiv when it was just way stronger than shiv :P

Ive tried rapid cannon on Aatrox. Work very well with his ult.

i think the point is you can use ranged items from melee. but you can't use melee items from a range

The sword is a just an emblem to represent the damage it adds, not suggest it's an actual weapon to be used. Otherwise Riot would need to completely redesign items per champ since why would Vayne use a pistol when she uses a crossbow?

Before the League lore got retgone'd by Riot, there was an explanation.

The items were simulacrums of actual artifacts kept in the Institute of War's vaults. 'Purchasing' one would bestow the item's enchantments on the champion through the summoning magic. They didn't physically carry the item around with them. It was tied to the summoner platform.
