Sona is an all-around champion... she doesn't need buffs.

She's not made to be like other supports. Or rather, she's made to be too much like them. Her abilities are limited, but a very large range. She has poke, and just damage period, sustain, engage and disengage, and CC.

Now lets say Sona does get a buff. What happens to her? Do you really want one champion overshadowing all others because she's just as strong as them in their core factors? I mean, imagine Sona with the damage of Karma, the sustain of Soraka, the engage of a Righteous Glory or the disengage of a Sivir ult, and the CC of an Alistar. I mean, it'd be pretty OP right?

Now not many people are focusing around her ultimate, but I have seen many posts around her poke, heal, speed boost, heck even saw a few posts on her high mana costs. Maybe its just me, but I feel like if Sona was buffed, she would be picked every single game and contested so hard for a support. The idea of sustaining like Soraka, while still engaging and disengaging like Alistar or Thresh, and poking like Karma or Brand just seems pretty... overpowered. Heck, even the idea of having low mana costs and just spamming all that shit seems scary.

I don't know, what about everyone else's thoughts?

Edit - 67Chrome explained to me a bit why she needs buffs, and I guess I get it... but the main reason I made this post is, it just sort of makes me paranoid. I mean, it seems like if one champion gets buffed because he's being overshadowed, then another champion gets overshadowed in the process, or maybe multiple. And it just seems like making her stronger will make other supports look weaker... especially someone like Annie, where if Sona was buffed too much, would bring everything Annie brings and more. Now she'd be overshadowed.

But, maybe if, like a lot of people say, she got higher base stats and was less reliant upon AP to be useful, she could be more... reliable. Still, that just sort of scares me... I don't know.

False dichotomy. You can buff sona without making her better then every other support at their own specialties.

She's a solid champion - but she's got some clear weaknesses. She has the EHP of a caster minion and implodes when anything hits her, especially now she's forced to purchase AP heavy builds, so buffing her a bit wouldn't make her take over. There are also always Janna Thresh , which will remain powerful choices in light of any other supports gaining momentum.

Her main issue right now though is: Nami

Since Sona's rework, Sona has just become a shadow of Nami rather than her own thing.

Prior to the rework Sona's persistent auras were pretty BA and allowed her her own niche, boosting the AD on her team for better Zed combos, better Caitlyn damage, faster tower-shredding. Sona also used to have lower cooldowns on her QWE, setting her apart as more of a sustained/endurance take where Nami was more of a bursty/short-term boosting support.

Now the only real reason to pick Sona is she's pretty much the Garen of supports. Great entry level champion, 100% accuracy damage, and a build path that's great for yoloqueue.

But at a certain point with a certain level of skill in using items and landing skillshots: She's essentially that 1567 damage sword where Nami is a 1678 damage sword. The QWE cooldowns are now pretty much identical. Nami's passive applies the speed buff on every skill, often for longer than Sona's "aura" is ever going to. Nami's On-hit boost applies the on-hit for longer than Sona's "aura". And Nami has a stun bubble rather than "eh" speed-boost in the QWE zone. Her stuff is admitadly harder to reliably land, but once you can:

That isn't to say Nami is better than Sona at everything, but Nami's better in enough areas there's no real reason to pick Sona.

One champion is just mathematically better.

Hmm, I guess that is a nice way to look at it... but then again, it seems like its really hard to make all champions balanced, with Riot only being human. It seems like if "A" champion is a little underpowered for the moment, and "B" champion is really good and better than A at everything, then if they buff A it overshadows a bunch of other champions and now people are complaining about them. So what I'm really scared of in a Sona buff is her becoming that A champion. Her getting a buff, little or large, and then overshadowing 3 champions rather than just her being out of the picture, and now all those are out and Sona is back in the meta.

I see where you're going with this but I don't think it's quite accurate. It applies to laning when either of them will have just one ally to support. With two or more allies, however, I think that Sona excels. Even if the raw numbers don't quite work out, a big boost to a single ally is sometimes the wrong tool for the job. Sona's Q and W will consistently and reliably boost an entire team. Spreading around the buffs makes it harder for the enemy team to focus a vulnerable ally and helps make every team member better at their jobs. If you can keep your waveclear mage and your adc both alive and strong, that can let you push objectives better than just boosting one of them.

She needs tanks to not be the dominant pick.

Vayne/non mobile mages/ad tops are the meta now (and ad jangle)

and supports? pretty much every support not named Janna that is meta is an engage/tank support

Meant in lane with her as support. Way too many tanks being picked over other supports. Thresh, Leona, Blitz, Naut.

If they weren't picked every game, we'd see Sona is a better spot (as well as most non tank supports).

Morganna rapes tanks, dont see alot of her though.

Yeah, but Janna is better at dealing with initiation as a whole, which is probably why she is picked more often. Morgana is still picked more than most non tank supports, outside of Janna.

who is asking for her to have soraka lvls of sustain or any of the other dumb things you are saying? people want a small buff to her not something that will overshadow other picks... thresh and the other tank supports are doing that job just fine right now

I don't mind her not being as good as other champs at their job, but when she's overshadowed completely even as a 'jack of all trades, master of none' type, I think that's a bit of a problem.

More satisfaction, Less suck. I don't want her to be better than other champs. I want her to feel like she's relevant and worth it.

people can't seem to grasp the concept of a champion doing everything having to be mediocre compared to champs that do one or two things well

especially when that champion has the mechanical intensity of a dora the explorer game
