Why is Frozen Mallet so Dam expensive?

SleepyLionCub··78 votes·5,648 views

I know the 700 hp is a lot. And the passive is nice. But at 3300 gold, there is no reason to touch it over a randuins? The only time it can ever be used is very late game full tank builds. Since just about every other tank item is more cost effective. It should only cost about 3100 or even a flat 3k

if it was worth buying adc mains would complain and it would go the way of atmas.

Tis a nice day6 votes

Frozen mallet was great when Atmas was still good (2% of max hp instead of 1.5%). Now that Atmas is gone, Frozen mallet is sort of just left in the dust.

Oh for the days of MallAtMog's :(

Edit: Cut me some slack, I made it up =P

TheSlappySlap16 votes

Hm... I always thought it was called Fratmog's

GaleWinUnleashed2 votes

That's more likely how it was actually referred to. I wasn't around at the time it was actually viable, so I never heard the term for it at all.

Atmogs Atmas+Warmogs Never heard anything for FM so Fratmogs could very well be a triple combo

GaleWinUnleashed2 votes

It seems I've been visited by the downvote fairies. Fratmogs it is!

Gin no Nekomata1 votes

Atmogs = Warmogs + Atmas Fratmas = Frozen Mallet + Atmas Fratmogs= FM + Warmogs + Atmas

That's how the combinations were abbreviated back in s2

Why would ADC mains complain? If it was worth buying then they could get it as their defensive item and then kite everyone (Unless they're Ashe)

—unless the slow stacks with her Q. furiously looking up information

Frozen Mallet's slow stacks with abilities, so Ashe would love a strong FM to become truly uncatchable (30% from FM and 35% from Q means 65% slow every single attack).

StealWolverine11 votes

Sorry but slows dont work like that. anything after the biggest slow is reduced to 35% effectiveness so it would only be a 45% slow in this case.

junglerboy161 votes

Wow, duh, I feel dumb for not seeing that.

Mathbalnase1 votes

And if you DO manage to get a 'strong' combined slow, you then get to interact with the super-fun 'soft cap'.

Yandere Carry1 votes

i thought they just stacked multiplicatively

Technically not, due to how slows stack, where each one reduces the next sloes effectiveness. Would be closer to a ~50% slow. But yeah I know what you mean.

ADC mains can actually use the frozen maul if it was worth buying. Think about it, every time they damage you you are slowed. Adc's would have basically ashe's on hit slow. Ashe would be able to stack it with her own slow too.

Imagine it was affordable. Suppose you were a toplane bruiser, ADC or really anyone who benefits from autoattacks. You get ahead in lane, then buy affordable FM. Then the permanent slow ensures that, if your opponent can't get to safety quickly, must fight you (running away is ineffective). But because you're ahead, they will lose any fight with you. Therefore your opponent must always stay out of range of your potential FM proc. For some champions, like Irelia, this range is greater than minion XP/CSing range.

This means an Irelia who gets ahead could buy affordable FM and freeze the lane near her turret, completely shutting down her opponent for the rest of the game. Not fun.

The way it is currently, it's very difficult to buy FM during lane phase, and the gold inefficiency means your opponent might be able to fight back even with inferior gold.

Slaaneshine3 votes

Essentially this. Frozen mallet isn't bad, nor is it OP. So don't try and fix what isn't broken. Has it's use still, as a perma slow is pretty damned strong; even in an mobilty era that slow can make sure killing you is rather easy.

If it only cost 2220 gold. And they removed the AD entirely. I'd buy the shit out of it.

TBadger5 votes

The numbers are pretty crap considering most completed items are well over 100% gold efficient with out their passive.

DeusVult15 votes

All tank items with maybe 1-2 exceptions are gold inefficient without their passives

All AD/AP items are >100% gold efficient without their passive

But no bias doe

TBadger1 votes

Based on stats alone,

Randuin's (the 'goto' defensive item), 96% efficient Rylai's (the sort of AP equivalent), 112% efficient Mallet, 89% efficient.

I think Frozen Mallet just leans far too heavily towards the defensive side. Fighters don't want it, because the ad is very small and health by itself is not good enough, you're much better off as a fighter buying a single defensive item that includes both health and resistances. And tanks don't want it either, because they're not bothered about the AD and the have enough CC already with out the passive.

What they need to do is make it more towards and offensive item. If it had 400 HP and 60 AD, that would make it 98% efficient (without the passive). This would make it much more attractive to fighters, and put it much more on par with Rylai's4. Both would give 400hp and about 80% of the AD/AP of the big ticket offensive items (e.g. infin edge and death cap).

At the moment, it just doesn't have a place in anyone's build. I mean, when was the last time you saw anyone buy it?

JevelFaithful2 votes

Which seems technically a bit high considering most items I can think off the top of my head are actually 105+% efficient. I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to tank and bruiser itemisation tought.

thinking man5 votes

You really don't want it to be easy to buy.

Darth Valer4 votes

Gangplank His Frozen Malletesque passive has been nerfed during the years because it was too oppressive in lane once GP got ahead. I agree that it's probably an underwhelming item (at least for the laning phase) for the same reason.

SleepyLionCub3 votes

A lot of you seem to think it would make people op because there would be no escaping them. So why isn't Ashe the best adc in the game then? Clearly she should be op because of her inescapable slows.

Or why isn't Randuins Omen and Frozen Gauntlet the best items in the game? They both go well with bruisers, and offer heavy slows. Yet you don't see too many people complaining about them.

Arveanor4 votes

Omen and Gauntlet don't provide permaslow, but you will find both of them are powerful and not infrequent buys.

Ashe isn't OP because you can duel her. That's what people are saying. FM would only be bought by people who were already well ahead to ensure that you can't even think about contesting them. If ashe is ahead, yes her q is very powerful, but because she is squishy and your support likely has burst and/or cc, you can still potentially deal with her if you play it smart.

Giving someone the hp and ad, and given how likely it would be built on bruisers (if efficient) means that not only can you not escape them, but they are more resistant to being bursted down (+700 hp tho) and you now really don't have any means of dealing with them.

Auryiel3 votes

Cuz you're not supposed to buy it

Kögâ3 votes

Truth is it used to be far more op back 2 seasons ago when not everyone had a gap closer. Now the meta favors these gap closers that eat up the slow effect and usually if you build frozen mallet its because you cant stick to enemies in the first place. The price should be redused or the effect buffed.

youngjake933 votes

Several LCS Gnar players rush Frozen Mallet.

ThePlasticSpork3 votes

You must not have been around for the Fratmog days.

The reason Frozen Mallet is deliberately kept bad is because permaslows heavily exacerbate snowballing. With it, provided you have the necessary DPS to kill your opponent, there's almost nothing they can do. This is because Frozen Mallet makes it so you also have the sticking power to ensure that they can never escape your DPS, and the tankiness to ensure that they can't simply burst you before you can deliver your damage.

Ashe is allowed to have her perma slow because every carry under the sun out-DPSes her and she can be bursted before she can deliver her damage. She's just about the only champion with a perma slow that's ever been balanced - and she pays for it dearly.

Mathbalnase3 votes

Restore Phage-based build-path.

Slow becomes MS theft decaying to 0 over duration.

Subsequent applications of passive within 3 seconds have 50% reduced effectiveness.

There, now it doesn't have to cost quite as much.

Yandere Carry1 votes

don't want FM passive and T-force being the same though.

Mathbalnase1 votes

FM and TForce under these changes would NOT be the same. TForce would not reduce the speed of affected targets. FM would not have a bonus damage proc FM would not have bonus AS, crit, AP, mana, or MS

What this change WOULD do, among other things: slightly increase the in-teamfight kiting power of FM at the expense of in-teamfight chasing power [ms theft vs slow] lessen the problem of 'permaslow' which contributes to keeping FM (otherwise) weak [decaying; reduced effectiveness of repeated applications] significantly ease the build path [phage]

Piantissimo2 votes

if it was worth buying ADC's would get it as a defensive item and just kite people like they are ashe.

it is also one of "those" items which has both defensive stats and offensive stats which make it really weird to buy because why would you ever need both in 1 item?

item 3001 item 3157 item 3116 item 3027 item 3156 item 3151 all have offensive and defensive stats.

JevelFaithful1 votes

You remind me that those are all mage/assassins items (save maybe for maw). Why were bruiser hybrid items bad while those are prefectly fine?

I can see 2 reasons : a) bruisers had warmog/atma that synergised well together. Like Adc have crit+as+ad that stack multiplicatively and mages have rabadon for the same reason, bruisers had atma. But bruisers weren't meant to really scale well. So the problem was atma. This one should be ok now. b) Because bruisers are naturally hard to kill while mages/adc/assassins are squishy. So the sustained damage of those items made them scale naturally better. This one is about the core design of the game and it's really unfixable. (unless they take 5 years to rework every champion)

Kitten of Evil4 votes

I think it's because most bruisers in the current meta can do more than enough damage with a single damage item (maybe two damage items) and four or five tanky items... that includes:

Nocturne Irelia Vi JarvanIV LeeSin and others too.

Champion Skin1 votes

The thing is that all AD champions have a decent amount of sustained damage (through Auto attacks... with no counter play.. everyone loves counter play so maybe we should make auto attacks skill shots as well? nah I am just kidding as that would be rather silly...) so if they are durable it is more troublesome then if AP champions are as they don't do much if their abilites are on cooldown or missed or something

JevelFaithful1 votes

I guess that's true. And just compounded by the fact melees are tankier in the first place.

That's if Lifesteal is considered defensive. I don't think it is, but I can see the argument.

Ashe

Still not nearly as terrifying as someone like Trundle Vi slowing you for 35-40%

Ashe you can just turn on and kill. You can't really do that to most Tops and Jungles.
