Those going on about it haven't been reading carefully enough.

The effect is capped now at 70, it requires a damage investment to use which means you'll be less durable, and it anti-synergizes with other damage reduction effects. It really isn't that big of a deal.

ModKnightsKemplar3 votes

Just for those of us who don't pay a lot of attention, do you know how many adjustments have been made to it while it's been on PBE? I feel like every time I read the tooltip it looks more reasonable, but I haven't actually tracked the changes over time.

It's been changed roughly 3-4 times. First time was reducing AD ratio and buffing base value, second added a hard-cap at 60 DR, recent buff took that to 70 DR.

Zalinthel1 votes

Basically this. With the ratio being 10% now, you need to get 500 bonus AD to cap it. Not only is that going to be hard to do, it needs a full damage investment. Not going to be broken.

Pika Fox5 votes

Oh look, the boards thinks it knows balance again. Still waiting for pyke to be some broken jungler. Or for IE to be a massive buff.

Doesn't work with Jhin. Been said like 10,000 times since the item showed up on PBE.

Romans VI XXIII1 votes

LMFAO, this item works on EVERY CHAMPION IN THE GAME.

What part of it "doesn't work on jhin"????

My Waifu Vanilla8 votes

It works on Jhin about the same as it works on Caitlyn. You know how much that is? Not much at all. Neither champion buys enough AD for it to be worthwhile since you get 1/3 the mileage out of it compared to a melee champion since if Jhin is in melee range of 3 champions no amount of DR is saving him.

Jhin was already tested with this item and with around 800ish AD, he isn't even nearly as broken as people claim he will be.

Ive been thinking about that too,it gives nice 60 damage + 200 hp and damage reduction, could be a good first buy, ninja tabi + shojin and the enemy adc is now doing 50 damage per auto, could even be helpful when ganked,if it blocks even a 100 damage coupled with + 200 hp and bone plating for good measure and you have a pretty good chance to survive.

If not then going for it as a 3rd or 4th item could help with not getting blown up,i think it could work on more aggressive, shorter range adcs like Vayne Lucian Draven especially Draven and Luc cause they don't need AS that much so they can stack damage to get even more out of the item

Also note, for the passive effect to take place, you need to be in range of 3 enemies then auto to get the effect, which sounds only viable for melees, but if you think about it if you manage to get the proc you probably don't need to stay in range of all 3 enemies for it to continue to work, you just Dash/Flash run away and you get that active if someone tries to dive you. Im not sure how big the range is on the item that detects enemies, but it could very well be enough to encompass their frontline, which is very often 2 enemies, which then gives more safety if someone tries to dive you,you get the proc while only trying to survive one enemy

Myozthirirn1 votes

70 cap does not mean 70, it means 70 cap. This is a really really bad item to rush.

HàrrowR1 votes

Ive never said it blocks 70 damage right off the bat?

Galio Ornn Zac ???

AirKingNeo3 votes

Technically they don't combo you. They let other people combo you during their CC.

Which is a problem with tanks. CC enables damage and a lot of people don't understand this.

Yets42403 votes

That isn't a problem, but the entire point of offensive tanks like Malphite and Amumu that try to lock down your team so their allies can win teamfights.

Gregorovic084 votes

Doesn't it say a max of 70 damage blocked per auto/ability? I'm not sure if that is broken or not but it is at least capped so as to not allow Jhin and others to abuse it.

5050BS1 votes

Yes 70. Its takes ~600-650 AD to get that. It was fun when you could get 850 AD and have 110 damage reduction and 330 if there was 3+ enemies. But was stupid OP

ForFoxSakes1 votes

200% more when theres more enemies nearby. Have this done mid game and you can have your assassins initiate fights and also be impervious to tank damage completely

Camille We gave her more defenses and shorter cool downs with the added benefit of more damage. Darius We thought that Darius needed more defenses without losing his offensive identity. Additionally, he'll be able to gain stacks as quickly as before if not faster. Draven There just isn't enough Draven in the League of Draven; so, we empowered his oppressive bullying in lane by adding additional damage to his kit while also making it more challenging than ever for enemies to punish him for extending. Illaoi To help keep Illaoi on par with Darius, we've provided her with additional health, more lane sustain, and increased damage. She really needed it even though her AD ratios are higher than the balance team on your average Friday night. Zed Talon We feel that assassins just aren't performing well enough when faced against two or more tanks in any given team fight and we feel that in addition to their already reliable escape tools, they should be allowed the opportunity to survive diving an entire enemy team in order to eliminate one or more targets. And since no one is building item 3814 anymore...

WTBeGirl100EUhr2 votes

Camille is eating a hefty damage nerf with the Steraks changes on the same patch. Don't expect her to build this, either.

Darius probably won't build this.

ADCs wont want to build this. It gives them less damage than whatever they'd rather be building and will rarely proc the full effect.

Illaoi might actually build this... but I doubt it.

Zed/Talon will, sure.

Darius may build this over Sterak's Gage since the latter will be nerfed and the former provides more relevant stats.

AirKingNeo1 votes

except the item requires Darius to A) stack AD items, which he can't do. or B) proc his passive, which is a bit difficult in teamfights with all the CC, though not impossible.

Why would he build an item that's only useful after he's fully stacked passive though?

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Acting like Darius needs help if he fully stacks his passive in a fight anyway. The item is straight up "win harder". Also, 90% of the time in a teamfight if the enemy team has a brain Darius will NEVER get the triple value off unless he flash+apprehends since he should be kited so hard that no one is in melee range of him.

AirKingNeo1 votes

that's the only way he procs Spear of Shojin because that's his only source of bonus AD.

Myozthirirn2 votes

Stearks is buffed for darius, it changes from enhacing only W damage to enhacing passive Q W and R. Right now you build it only for the shield, after the patch it will give him offensive stats too.

This item is set for AD bruisers with a high ratio set, and a great desire to also stack HP/CDR.

You don't get this item in a vacuum. You get this item, Cleaver, Steraks, Amta's Impaler, and then some other item for your final slot. You are willing to forgo a bit of resist with the passive DR (up to -210 damage before resist, which with the average resistances that we should be expecting (~200 armor/~100-150MR) equals out to -70 physical damage or -105 magic damage.

Meaning this item is GREAT for when you are vs a team that is very heavily stacked on many quick, low damage hits across the board (Cass mid, Yi jungle, Ashe ADC, ect). But it won't really do jack shit to a high AP Veigar's combo, Jhin's autos, or Camille's combo.

AirKingNeo2 votes

Camille is nerfed with Sterak's nerf. If she's forced to build more damage she'll die quicker.

Darius won't buy Spear because it is only useful during his 5 stacks.

Illaoi just sucks.

Are we really circlejerking assassins? Can't we be reasonable and just say, "Hey, LDR pushed these guys over the edge (probably)."

Escheton2 votes

Full AD Sion with 4k Health, 40+% cooldown with celerity and gathering storm adding extra damage reduction to the point that noone breaks his shield and he just slowly moves closer to the nexus with his 400AD is gonna be fun, I guess.

How does the damage reduction interact with armor and magic resist?

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

I think it's just "abilities and auto attacks deal X less damage", and then anything else that passes through gets reduced by resistances

Ayzev1 votes

Resistances apply before flat reductions.

No, Riot has specifically stated that Spear is before armor/MR. The order of operations is a major mess, but for the most part this mess doesn't cross-reference any issues just because of the lack of any real flat DR effects (multipliers just multiply the effects at each point), the only 2 being Amumu's E (-10 phys damage, applies after EVERYTHING else), and the new Spear (Assumed it procs right after %DR, but before anything other than that %DR).

Myozthirirn1 votes

you cant reach the 500 ad required to cap this item and 4k hp on the same build. And even if you could you would provably had only 70 armor/35 mr so enemies would be doing true damage -70 to you.

Did a quick 10 minute practise tool to farm to 200 minions. Going Tank runes main, so some extra hp from that, the %health rune, which was underleveled because in a normal game you stand around while your adc farms mid a while and you dont just fast forward 10 minutes to 20 minutes. Anyways. With celerity, gathering storm. item 3083 item 3071 item 3053 item 3111 item 3025 I had 3400HP, 323AD, 156 Armor, 140 Magic resist. Now add the spear, some more realistic farming and you have quite the splitpushing or teamfighting monster.

Admittedly, more a bruiser build. But games end by minions pushing if I try to farm realistically. So here is a rough impression. I might start up the PBE in a bit and see what I can do.

IDK about xin, because xin doesn't scale with AD as well as few other champs (this is why xin needs tank items instead of pure damage items). Riven and Fiora are the two champions with the greatest scaling with AD. It will be an op item on those champs.

https://pcgamesn.com/league-of-legends/league-of-legends-patch-812 The fact of the matter is that no tanks (and almost no fighters) scale very well with pure AD. Tanks build titanic hydra mainly because of the AoE and the health stat it provides, (and the damage nuke from its unique active) and not because the flat AD of the item, which is why the other new item "Atma's Recoknoning" might not be a very popular item. Same logic goes to the new sterak's gage. With the new change, riot is determined to gut all the tanks and tanky bruisers alike. Most tanks and fighters don't scale very well with AD, but they do build Triforce to take advantage of the passive to take down squishy targets. If you remove that base attack damage passive from a tank's favorite item and give it flat AD, it's a straight up nerf to most tanks. In fact, there will be very few "situational" cases where none tanks will build it over other items. Most damage carries do not need defensive stats (at least in high enough elos). So when tanks will no longer build this item because of the lack of synergy with the triforce that it provides, who's going to build this item?

Where exactly is this game heading? What's up with creating items that suit no champions lately? Creating all these items without distinct usefulness is what makes this game boring. Imagine this: why create AD and AP champs when hypothetically all items provide BOTH Ad and Ap stats in all cases? How boring the game will be.

how does it work with Dots? will it just make their damage garbage?

30% effectiveness on any multi-tick ability, including things like Garen E. Won't do much versus most dots

I still wanna test it on tank Pyke

Supposedly overgrowth and cinderhulk increase his max HP despite his passive limits according to lolwiki

Tank items will give him AD via bonus health and he'll get resistances

AD will give him some damage and damage reduction via the spear

I'm just curious thats all...

Tomoe Gozen1 votes

Bruisers don't have anything to rely on while itemizing for damage. They either conform to half damage/more tank stats items and delay their damage and pay so much gold for literally no impact or they are super aggressive and manage to succeed in getting a lead 50% of the time.

The other 50% where you fail is when you get set back a bit but it even feels so much worse because the items for bruisers are so expensive that you're still struggling to compete even when you're 0/0.

ForFoxSakes1 votes

Bruisers already have very high base stats and scaling in their kit they can open tank items and still kill people

Tomoe Gozen1 votes

{quoted}

Vi can't do shit with tank items. After you get outscaled out of the early-mid game, what you're getting out of tank items (peppered ambient damage) isn't enough because you can't tank as well and you can't kill as fast. Then what are you doing in the team if the items you have don't put you squarely into a single role to enable you your high points? Am i just supposed to be an ult bot for mediocre CC and accept that i'll die after that engage because i don't have anything else to do?

Some champions will always find a way to abuse a single or more items, given that no champion plays the same. But saying that SoS is badly design because Xin abuses it the most is the most ridiculous thing i've heard. SoS does not provide more stats in damage blocking than actual HP/resistance items.

DragonShea1 votes

here is what I'd like to see. for every 100 bonus HP you have, the damage reduction cap will increase by one. Meaning that you have to build bruiser if you want to gain more DR. Reduce that the cap to 25 and make it have a hard cap of 60

Escheton1 votes

Does this item work against True Damage?

Bidaru1 votes

How does it work with Syndra R ? It is considered as a dot ? Does each ball has damages reduced ? It would be a huge nerf for her in this case.

I still think boosting resistance on damage dealers and damages on tanks makes the game rely more on snowball that on positioning and teamplay, but meh, I don't really play this game anymore anyway.
