Incentives to climb the ladder
As League of Legends started to grow, there were more reasons to reach gold. It meant something back then. Around the earlier seasons, reaching gold 1 was like a really awesome thing, which is why you got rewards for it. A Victorious skin.
But nowadays, gold is... well. Gold is kind of the new silver. It's really no big deal if you reach Gold now and honestly it just feels like there isn't much of a goal anymore.
When I first started season 6, I was silver. And because I wanted the victorious skin for the year, I decided to climb. And within about a week or so, I hit gold. Almost immediately, I felt the drive to continue climbing just leave me. The only real reward that's really worthwhile is the victorious skin (even if Victorious Sivir wasn't all that awesome...) which you get by reaching gold.
Of course if you're trying to reach for pro, then obviously you want to climb and try to reach challenger. Or maybe if your goal is to be a league coach and you want to hit diamond, that could be your incentive. However the biggest problem is that most of these are what I would consider 'Third party' incentives. Being that the incentives you have are ones created by a source outside of League of Legends.
Honestly, I feel like ward skins and the little border around your name really doesn't feel like much of a reward for reaching higher than gold.
Here's just a few random suggestions:
Gold: Summoner Icon, Banner Trim, Loading screen border (with new division markers), Invite and friend request flair, Victorious Skin (and champion if unowned).
Platinum: Icon, Trim, Border, flairs, Victorious Skin and one legendary skin voucher (and champions if unowned), Platinum Emoticon (on Ctrl 7 behind the mastery icon)
Diamond: Same rewards as platinum, only replacing the platinum emoticon with a diamond one and unlocking hextech annie (or something rare and awesome)
And... you pretty much get the idea.
What do you guys think?~
