does Gangplank's new E lack counterplay?

Especially in a melee lane?

GP's barrels provide a massive zone threat because of their huge damage and decent radius. They are hard to play against as a melee because to disarm them you have to be in their range, and GP has a ranged attack that can detonate them before you reach them. If you don't disarm them, they keep you from CSing, and GP will usually just drop a barrel on you, Q the original, and you've eaten the damage anyway.

Even if there is some obvious counterplay I'm missing (besides "pick ranged"), I don't think GP is punished enough for failing to use his barrels well. If he blows it up and doesn't hit anything, he still gets the passive refresh and movespeed boost. It costs no mana, and the recharge rate and charge capacity are generous enough to him that he really doesn't have to worry about having large downtime without barrels. If the enemy manages to destroy the barrel, they only get a measly ten gold, which, while of course useful, doesn't really justify the risk taken to disarm them and any resources they may have used to get to the barrel without GP detonating it.

If you got any tips, I'll be happy to take them, but as it stands playing against GP as a melee feels terrible to me.

Your main hope of getting around his extreme zoning potential just watch when he uses parrrley it has a decent cooldown you could probably destroy at least 1 to 2 barrels. They removed he shoots when you crit so you can easily tell the difference between his normal autos and his parrley.

I see where you're coming from, but that doesn't stop him from just saving his Q to detonate barrels. Additionally, GP players will probably realize that enemies will wait for him to Q to go disarm barrels, so they will just plop another barrel on top of the enemy and Q the original, forcing the enemy to eat damage.

Well to be honest most gps are more concern on getting the plunder of course they can plunder with barrels but that solves your barrel problem unless he knows how to not connect them correctly.

all you need to do is hit at the 2nd tick as a ranged champion, by the time your auto reaches the barrel it will be on the last tick and gangplank will not be able to q in time. reguardless, not everything needs counterplay, gangplank is fine.

I specifically said "as a melee champion", I have no issues with the barrels when playing any ranged champion.

well then if you don't have problems as a ranged champion then isn't that counter play? like how darius pretty much zones any melee champion but can be kited easily?

No, picking a ranged champion against GP or Darius is counterpicking, not counterplay. Counterplay is very specifically what actions you can take in game to respond to the enemy, not in champion select. Darius has similar counterplay issues against melees to GP's E, but that's already being addressed to an extent on the PBE.

Also getting counter pick is not always avoidable if you have a higher pick order than there top lainer you go a melee top lainer almost 90 percent of top lane champs they will just pick gp.
