Probably the same thing that happened with Dodge Chance Runes; they'll refund the IP.
Waaay back, can't remember if it was during Season 1 or early Season 2, there was a stat for Dodge Chance. Three champions had it naturally--Udyr, Sivir and Jax--and there were two items that granted Dodge Chance, Phantom Dancers and Ninja Tabi. And then runes.
Dodge Chance was removed due to the binary nature of the RNG--either it worked often enough to let you win/survive, or it didn't happen at all and it was a bit of a waste of gold--and everyone who bought Dodge Chance runes for their Jax builds had the runes refunded for IP.
So... like critical hits?
Let it be known that I have never actually defended Crit Chance as a mechanic, and that I believe it needs to be made more dynamic than a chance that you might deal more damage.
That said, while Crit Chance poses a lot of the same problems that Dodge Chance created, it's less of a problem, primarily because the archetype that uses it is balanced around using it. Physical damage output as a system is balanced around the three-stat scaling. Crit Chance is a necessary evil, because it's basically the reason that physical damage can scale into late-game to the point where marksmen can be a glass cannon.
It's less drastic than Dodge Chance was, so it was less offensive, too. Crit Chance is positive RNG, while Dodge Chance was negative RNG.
