What I love about Shyvana

Mira Arya Enthe··27 votes·2,053 views

And why I fear her being turned into another "Build black cleaver and maybe pubstomp" Darius style champion.

What I love about her current design: 1: Focused around map awareness, strategy and objective play. Not just raking in kills by twitching better. She doesn't wait for the game to happen around her. She makes it happen. She forces team fights, she pushes lanes and towers, she takes objectives(often solo), she makes enemies run away.

2: Versatile builds. I have seen players in Diamond+ build her AD, AP, On-Hit, Bruiser, Tank, Burst, DPS, Duelist, Split push, Movespeed. Really the only bad stats on her are probably Crit Damage, Mana(duh) and heavy armor pen(since she is about 40-60% magic damage depending on build). And while some(AP) are not optimal, they still work.

3: Her skins. Even though none have altered voiceovers or amazing sound effects. They are all still really good skins. Whether you like cute and badass, sexy and primitive, epic and showy, dark and dominatrix, fun and spacer. She has GREAT skins. Tho... wish her Spacer skin had better voiceovers, at least a filter, her base lines are so out of place on that skin. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/XfPgnrOg-riot-i-would-pay-real-money-shyvana-skin-related (Related thread)

4: Hybrid damage, Hybrid defenses. She deals roughly 40-60% magic damage depending on her build and how the game goes. Her W does AoE magic damage and magic damage on hit, her E does magic damage and %HP magic damage on hit, her ult does magic damage. Some of her potential item choices do magic damage item 3091 item 3068 item 1401 item 3146 item 3087 but her Q does double AAs and her kit favors things like attack speed, fervor and items like item 1416 item 3153 item 1400 item 3022 item 3748 Overall this means she gets mixed damage, which makes up for the fact that generally she doesn't get the amount of dedicated penetration a pure AD or AP champion would get. For example, while item 3071 or item 3001 are neither idea on Shyvana. It is hard to itemize against her because she does both forms of damage. Balancing one another out. And then there is her passive, formerly on her ult it was moved to her passive so she could benefit from it from level 1. But having that hybrid defense boost is just... solid.

5: Dueling power and clear speed. Honestly no, I don't want clearing the jungle to be a 'challenge'(aka take longer and you finish with low HP) I want to enjoy the game, I neither enjoy last hitting or clearing camps. Though optimizing my route is nice, I don't want to play a jungler who has a 'hard time' clearing. Her base stats, on hit power, passive damage and so forth, make her clear amazing. I like this. But these things go further, and give her some of the strongest dueling power in the game. Since she has so much versatility in items and can get gold easily, she can build against otherwise superior duelists. I enjoy this, it means I'm not helpless just because they picked the 'stronger' champion. I hate the entire meta of counter picking, I want my individual performance and team play to win or lose, not my matchup. Honestly I will always prefer mild burst with sustained combat power, over huge burst and done type gameplay. I did even when I played mages.

6: High base movement speed. This is super important to me. HUGE! I won't play Ashe anymore due to the nerf to her base movement speed, I'd had rather they nerfed her slow, damage, utility or anything. I come from a background of Sonic the Hedgehog, racing and free running. I cannot stand moving slow. Even without her W or boots, Shyvana feels nice, because with just movespeed Quints and movespeed from masteries she feels solid and mobile, unlike many of the turtles in this game I otherwise would enjoy, but refuse to play because spending two hours walking to lane isn't fun.

7: Symmetry, even more personal than #6. To put it simply, I have OCD, and some of the movements and abilities in this game tick me hard when I play as them, specifically: Riven Diana Illaoi Tryndamere I actually love all 4 of those champions. But things about their movements, animations and visuals bother me. I love that Shyvana does not at all bother me so. Yeh.

8: Her vicious, mighty, muscular, powerful beauty. It isn't try-hard warrior like Illaoi which was likely to appease SJWs, but it also isn't just a curvy, smooth seductress like Ahri. They really made Shyvana stunny, curvy, beautiful. But savage, mighty, frightening and grim. I love it. She is utterly beautiful, and as said previously, I don't think any of her skins are badly made. I would choose any one of them as my primary skin, and cycle through all of them game to game. Her voice is perfect, her dialogue is sexy, scary and epic. She all around is so lovable as a champion. I fear them aiming her too hard towards being a monster, a beauty, a muscular warrior or something else like that.

9: Punchy human form of ferocious and fast combat, commanding dragon form of destruction and power(okay, her dragon form could use some work in achieving that fantasy).

Anyway. With upcoming changes to Shyvana confirmed, these are the things I love about her current design. And I really hope Riot cares enough about us players who already love her, to listen to our input.

What do you like about Shyvana? What do you hope stays intact? How do you feel about Riot saying they are looking to make changes to her? Post below!

I love this champion. I play her nearly every game. As of now I have a 70% win rate on her in normals and 61% in ranked. She has carried me from B4-S2 and still climbing. She has given me an 'above average MMR'. I have 127.4k mastery points and level 7 on her. Been playing her since S2, played her top, then top/mid, then top/jungle, from S5 onward only jungler. I'd have more to brag about on her. But I don't play much due to full time work and school. But I'll get around to it ;D so long as Riot keeps her cool.

"I see you're enjoying Shyvana's old fashioned kit....It would be a shame if we were to....REWORK HER!" - Rito to my old GP :(

Mira Arya Enthe3 votes

I have some faith in Riot believe it or not. As somebody who use to play Talon I think I will pick him up again with his new kit. And the Poppy rework made her move from my 5th top laner to my 1st. She passed Teemo, Riven, Shyvana(who dropped out into jungle only) and Garen.

They have had some flops. The Malz rework made me miserable and the Morde one didn't accomplish much. But I think they are getting a bit better.

WinTheWarOnPants2 votes

i kinda agree. i think the assassin update is the best one(not that it's hard to beat the previous class reworks...), but i'm still terrified for Evelynn. she is my favorite champ no contest and i would never stop playing her if it wasn't for mastery chests and random game modes. the reason i'm most scared is because she only has a small mount of dedicated players, but she has a ton of vocal people who don't play her but have HELLA opinions on what she "is" and how she "should be". Almost all of them think she is a succubi(which dear god don't make me explain why she's not again), and that BDSM is her primary "theme" aka they just want another slutty spank bank champ for them to wank off too. her ACTUAL mains and people who love her be damned... I'm really scared that riot will sacrifice her to the "majority" and screw over us Evelynn mains. riot has a track record of doing this. after all you low playrate champs don't make nearly as much money as sayAhri Jinx and that's why they so many high quality skins.

Because... She's a cool character, and simple mechanics mean you can focus more on the overall gameplay. Not everyone has world's level mechanics.

Decrit2 votes

dude, i can see the flavour of simple kits ( play a lot xin too ) but the problem is that they do a thing that somehow every character does. They should update ( keyword: update, not rework) shyvana to add to her something else beside just going in and maul people, since it adds nothing to the game compared to other champions that are different but feel and do far too much similiar.

Not saying she should have tunnels like rek' sai, but something more distinctive.

Isn't that every champion though? Just do some QEWR = get a kill. Even if you don't use abilities, you just right click on enemies. There's more to it than that.

None of these champions take incredible amounts of mechanical skill or combo prowess to play to a decent level.

Probably because first and foremost this game is about teamwork, strategy, gold management and objective capturing. Twitch reflexes and skilled combos are just one manner to achieve those goals.

Dealth7 votes

I didn't mean to trigger everyone so hard, I'm just saying that playing Shyvana requires spamming qwe mindlessly on whoever you are trying to kill. Some of the champions you listed follow this (mostly the tank champions) but most of the ones you listed do not. Some have health reducing abilities they must worry about (vlad/aatrox), very advanced mechanics (corki/rumble), lots of skillshots to land (viegar/lux) and other things you have to pay attention for.

Once again, I'm sorry if I offended you but I'm just stating the truth. You might like champions like this so you can focus on the game more, and that's fine, but the truth is Shyvana is a simple champion that requires almost no mechanics to play. Which in my opinion makes her less fun to play.

Weissritter3 votes

And that simplistic yet functional kit is why we like her. To each their own my friend :p

IGotScuttleCrabs1 votes

I can understand where you both come from. Shyvanas kit is nice and simple but can be to simple is a way. Take Xin for example. Another very simple champion. Use abilities and auto attack to death. BUT, there's more potential. You can start your Q on minions and monsters then E to the enemy for the immediate knock up. You can E to a minion behind your enemy then ult to knock them into your team or tower. It comes down to both having a low skill floor but a champion like Xin has a higher potential skill cap that doesn't make him any less easy mechanical to get into for people that want that.

Yi is another good example with things like mitigating damage with your heal and dodging with alpha.

I feel Shyv could use some things like these to spice up her gameplay.

Weissritter1 votes

I don't disagree tbh; though I feel like they could have done more with her dragon form than "bigger with more aoe". That is where I feel they could have added interesting mechanics but the opportunity was heavily missed :P

Yes I agree, Skarner is a boring champion (in my opinion). His kit is similar to Shyvana, besides the ults. (I find shyvana ult fun btw, just not her other ablities)

Ryze Vladimir Rumble Karthus

You're not the same guy, but OK. Ryze has advanced mechnics, you have to memorize a whole book of combinations. You have to think about who to use spell flux on and which abilties to use afterward to empower it, charging runes with your q etc.

Vladimir will run out of health if he is not careful. Rumble will overheat if he is spamming abilities. Karthus has to constantly aim all his abilities and be careful how he uses his w or he will run out of mana quickly. Also requires good map awareness on ult.

I'm just throwing them out there. Yes, there are a ton of nuances, but their basic playstyles are built around low CD abilities.

More often than not champions like Shyvana require something more to be good rather than just spamming. A skilled shyvana player is good at tactics, but a skilled riven player is skillful at comboing. In that sense, the tactician also gets to play the game.

I, personally, used to play this game because it felt so strategic. Now? Not so much; I'm only still around because of some friends.

If her gameplay were a bit more interactive, I'd probably make her one of my top 5 junglers. I love dragons, and I love powerful female warriors, and I love basically everything else about Shyvana.

Unfortunately, her gameplay is just a bit too simplistic for me. Hopefully that minor gameplay update Riot mentioned later this preseason will help fix that.

Still, I have unwavering respect for you, Mira.

Literally the only reason I am playing Vi is because I go to half a million mastery on Shyvana and decided I wanted to diversify a little XD (Not to mention it feels REAL good to combo someone out of existence with a good round of abilities from a AD Fighter Vi)

Well said. +1.

Personally my favorite thing about Shyvana is that she taught me how to AA reset. With resets on her Q and Hydra it's amazing how fast you can blow someone up. XD

RizHippoKhan2 votes

As a shyvana main ever since i started LoL(although im relativly new compared to alot of people here) i feel like they could give her w the singed treatment, make her ult unstoppable, make her passive into a more interesting defensive tool(maybe some interaction with dragon form too) and most importantly give her a better model. Everything feels perfect other than these. :/ (actually im scared riot might ruin her so i wish they dont make sudden dramatic changes)

btw i dont think they should nerf her tho

Weissritter2 votes

Your #8 point... I love it. It is exactly how I feel and no one else that asks me seems to understand xD

Was a fun read, and as someone who never would have looked at league if Shyvana as a character didnt draw my interest in enough to play, I totally understand.

As much as I really think she needs a rework, I am afraid it will come at the cost of what I liked about her. At least visually she looks pretty good honestly so I doubt a visual update to scare me is on the way (though I have liked most updates to date, something about em working on shy scares me x.x )

This does not mean I dont have faith though! I believe in riot still 8)

i don't wanna talk too much about whatever item she might build soon but I hope with her upcoming changes she feels a little more fire dragon-y, streamlining her kit for a more clear build now that on-hit is basically dead would probably be easier for everyone too

right now her W doesn't really feel or look like fire and her ult's a little disappointing, i'd like them to play that up more

not a shyvana main but I like to play her for damage when sejuani isn't needed

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

No. You points are spot on and well thought out. Not a Sej main but I play her when we need more CC than Shy. ;P

Axhliay2 votes

I think the she needs more involvement around her ultimate. Give her access to it at level 1, but change it to give massively increased utility. And rebuff her Q please.

She needs her control jungle abilities back, and having dueling prowess is part of that.

Things I build on Shyvana, (I love that so many things work well)

item 1416 item 3748 item 3111 item 3022 item 3065 item 3075 item 3742 item 3083 item 3078 item 3071 item 3143 item 3026 item 3102 item 3006 item 3009 item 3047 item 3053 item 3153 item 3091 item 3156 item 3020 item 3068 item 3190

All of these have their own place with shyvana, the trick is knowing when to build what ;)

Hilarious extras that work surprisingly well if used right (and fully committed into, not hybridizing between lol)

AP items

item 1402 item 3115 item 3020 item 3116 item 3146 item 3151 item 3001 item 3157 item 3089 item 3285 item 3030 item 3152

Crit/AD items

item 1400 item 3031 item 3508 item 3094 item 3087 item 3072 item 3046 item 3147 item 3142 item 3074

What ways have I used any of these items to play as Critvana/APvana/ADvana/Tankvana is a secret :p

(LMAO at a recent game where I had a full team of AD's when I picked my Shyvana , and I said "Lol we really need AP..... then said you know what? Don't worry guys, I got this!" Toward the end of that winning game, enemy Lucian : "That build.... is hot." HAHAHA made my day.)

I used play and enjoy Shyvana a lot too back in the days, but that was when she could also go top lane which was where I played her(sucked(and still do) at jungling). Her Burnout is one of my favourite spells in the game.

Forhonor3212 votes

I really just got into playing Shyvana a while back for most of the same reasons you listed. Skins, hybrid damage, clear speed, looks, simple to play and just overall shes a god damn dragon. Why wouldn't I want to play her?

The problem I have with her though, currently, is that it feels like shes not really a meta pick at the moment. The jungle changes for preseason are somewhat going to cripple her along with other farm junglers due to increased timers, SOA is getting removed leaving nother for her in resolve tree except maybe Grasp, Fervor is getting nerfed, and overall I constantly feel like I can just pick someone better, which isn't what I usually want to do. I just feel like so many other champions provide a bit more than her. Others can provide slows, taunts, knock ups. Shyv though just kinda has damage and has to heavily counter jungle and then beat you over the head with her giant bag of gold.

At the same time, her ult just isn't really satisfying at least when I use it. It's not unstoppable, which has lead me to very rage-fueled moments when I get CC'd, the hit box barely works most of the time, and worst it that it doesn't really feel like it drags you're opponents to your end location, even though it says that.

She just doesn't feel like shes been in a good spot for the last few patches and overall has made me a very sad Shyv player. Though I did see that Meddler was talking about looking into her in the next few patches, mostly with her dragon form. With that in mind maybe they'll finally make her ult unstoppable and fix the hitbox. I can only continue to dream about that.

Captain Aishi1 votes

on your point .5, shyvana is actually one of the champions most vulnerable to counterpicking, and her dueling ability is quite average, she gets completely curbstomped by actual duelists like tryndamere, trundle and co. (offset by the fact that your teamfighting has more potential than theirs)

i've recently been going item 3078 item 3053 item 3026 item 3022 item 3512 on toplane shyvana (replace mallet by cinderhulk in the jungle) and the results have been quite impressive you get super strong dueling and splitpushing with triforce early on, and once you finish steraks you have enough durability to start teamfighting while being a massive damage threat, and you only become harder to kill from that point on (and since both triforce and steraks scale your damage with levels, you keep getting quite a bit of damage as the game goes on as well)

as far as them making changes and classifying her as a juggernaut (when her actual playstyle is that of a melee ADC basically) considering the 'juggernaut' update removed one of my favourite champions from the game (old darius) and it was a total disaster, i'm scared as hell of any potential changes to shyvana, even if her current state is a bit underwhelming in the league of legends of today

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

If you are going Triforce you will always be outdueled. I personally wouldn't get Steracks, Shyvana has average base AD and her max HP is only average without building a ton. Plus her W scaling us bonus AD only. Triforce good for burst and killing carries. Terrible for dueling on her.

You have to counterbuild for dueling power. Wit's end for magic damage. Blade/Blood for HP stackers. Thornmail and Ninja Tabi for people like Yi or Trynd. Etc.

I outduel Kayle and Yi easily. Trynd is harder. Gotta bait out his ult.

Can Beat most Jax and every Udyr so far.

I will give you post-6 Trundle. Hard to beat him.

Olaf I can beat but takes some invested gold into dueling items.

You would not be able to out-duel an on-hit Yi who knew how to build and also took exhaust (to be honest I think you're probably overestimating your dueling power because you pretty much always have exhaust and most other champs you'd be fighting wouldn't). Silencee's crit Yi maybe. Tryndamere is impossible if he builds right.

item 3087 item 3071 item 3158 item 3153 item 3031 item 3046

A Tryndamere with these items can not be kited to wait out the ult by Shyvana.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

That is a six item build. Shyvana is a mid game gold machine. She not only has good base stats but a ton of hidden power in her kit.

Free Armor and MR. On hit flat damage. On hit %HP damage. Hybrid damage.

That said I don't expect to outduel Trynd late game. At that point I focus on team fighting. Against Trynd and Yi built crit a Randuin's and Ninja Tabi do wonders. While Shy on the other hand is hardly effected by either.

On the other hand an on hit Yi I would only duel with assistance. Yi has almost no tools, little AoE and is squishy. Hos advantages disappear with allies or if you just save exhaust or challenging smite for him.

I run exhaust anytime they have duelists. But often do not need it. Everyone underestimates early game Shyvana with red buff and Fervor. Mid game my gold lead is usually cemented so it doesn't matter.

Against heal/regen/lifesteal champs like WW or Zac ignite is good.

Against hard CC burst comps flash.

In TT I only take ghost. Still flatten most duelists even before gold advantage. The threat to Shyvana is not duelists. It is being Kited by range and fellow Juggernauts like Darius, Illaoi and Garen.

Captain Aishi1 votes

once you finish triforce and steraks, your Q hits for close to 700 damage every two seconds, triforce is actually one of the best items in the game for pushing and dueling power early (and besides, this is a teamfight oriented build, it's just that the early part of it allows you to put pressure solo as you bulk up for teamfights)

also it's actually impossible for shyvana to outduel a competent kayle at any point in the game with any build, since kayle can just Q shyv and W herself and be immune to her

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Again. Triforce is good for burst. But doing the bonus damage every few seconds vs other options that let her do more bonus damage period, are cheaper(and thus can be bought earlier) is better for dueling.

If you look at pro-builds Diamond/Challenger/Master tier players buy it on her about 20% of games.

If you look at champion.gg it isn't even listed.

It is too expensive. Plus you are paying for mana. The build path also isn't amazing. Thus it is best as a snowball or late game item on her.

Steraks is good against burst comps or executes. Otherwise it is only okay on her.

Shyvana has a gap closer and can itemize against Kayle quite well. Like Trynd the biggest threat is the invulnerability period.

Again Shyvana has to play her itemization, hybrid damage and defense, and her gold advantages over champions. That is how she wins. If she builds the same every game she will not outduel anybody.

Duelist or drain tank with magic damage? Wit's end rush after jungle item. Against fed Vayne? Nope.

Your build also completely lacks Shyvana's named strongest asset. On hit.

DunkinNoobs1 votes

I love Triforce as a split push item. It makes you kill towers insanely fast and gives you the mobility and burst to dive people who try to defend the towers. Otherwise, it's mediocre as you said.

I actually like item 3071 on Shyv now that Bloodrazer is physical damage. You absolutely destroy tanks once you have both of those items and the other stats on Cleaver are pretty good on Shyv anyway.
