Why doesn't anyone play Taliyah?

4NoxiousHours··55 votes·8,343 views

Since my return of playing league, I've played like more than 50 games so far and I have not seen Taliyah anywhere. Neither on streams in Twitch.

What's wrong with her?

All I have been seeing MOSTLY is Yasuo Zed Leblanc Katarina

HAH what do you know, they're all assassins -_- typical.

EDIT: WOW I didn't expect this thread to be on the hot center! Hopefully Riot acknowledges this and maybe comment their thoughts about Taliyah as well.

Her eyebrows are too big, she's not kawaii enough.

LunSeiSleidee4 votes

And that's exactly why she's one of my favorite designs.

TheFallenShaw29 votes

She has a high skill cap, mana hungry, and her ult is still buggy at times. Thats the main problems to her. Well that and the CC heavy meta with her so squishy.

OhZenny3 votes

true but its mainly that she's a boring character with no personality she's basically the modern (old) yorick and warick

Fairyfleur5 votes

How is she boring? I enjoy her personality and her lore, and I know a lot of other people who do too.

There are quite a few reasons.

  1. She is severely gimped by competitive. Much like Shen and Lissandra, Taliyah is solely balanced around her performance in pro-play. A little while after her release and a few required buffs, she began dominating competitive. At the time the meta was so AP heavy, she was allowed to dominate, as her laning is very oppressive against immobile mages. She had to be severely nerfed as a result.

  2. Not a generic theme. As far as it goes her design is very different from most other League of Legends champions. She's not arrogant or prideful, so she loses points there. Her design is somewhat unique as well, so she doesn't appeal to the mass.

  3. Too high a skill floor. To make Taliyah work on a fundamental level it actually quite a difficult learning curve. She isn't nice to beginners and her non-linear kit makes it hard to know what to do in all situations. She's extremely unforgiving if you mess up, especially her W. She simply takes a lot more effort to make her function on the same level as other champions, and for a lot of people it's not worth it unless you have ulterior motives.

  4. Non-suiting meta. The Assassin meta really doesn't suit her, her combo is extremely reliant on landing skillshots, and with the abundance of Dashes and Blinks, it makes her job a lot harder. She fits REALLY well into AP heavy meta's alongside Syndra, Xerath, Lux, Veigar, Ahri.

whenever I face a Zed or other lethality champions I change masteries from 12/18/0 to 18/0/12 or 18/12/0 with death fire touch and play her as the control mage she was meant to. It's not the most effective way against assassins obviously, but building her tanky and survive long in late game while using her utility to win fights is more fun than building her full ap which seems like a scam on her 0.45 ap rates.

I'm curious, do you think Taliyah needs buffs? If so, what kind would you like to see her get?

Who is Taliyah3 votes

I don't think she needs major buffs. Some mana cost buffs in early stages and a power shift from her Q to W E combo is what she needs imo.

Comrade Guylas2 votes

Oh wow I think I'm actually going to try this. I've never seen anyone do this.. so you've irked my curiosity. It'd be nice to not have the feeling of dread as I go into a game as Taliyah vs Katarina or something.

IxtaliKing14 votes

I think the problem with Taliyah is her high skill floor. She just takes waay too much effort to make work, it takes away from the enjoyment of playing her imo. This is coming from someone who actually likes Taliyah a lot, I wish I had the patience to master her because he has a great deal of potential.

Who is Taliyah6 votes

Just try it, she is lots of fun

IxtaliKing2 votes

What's the most comfortable build with her? I never feel like I'm building her appropriately

Dynikus3 votes

item 3165 item 3116 item 3020 and finish off with some combination of item 3285 item 3151 item 3001 item 3135 item 3089 item 3157 item 3030 depending on what you need.

Who is Taliyah5 votes

There are many builds. These are the builds that work the best for me currently. item 3030 item 3009 item 3151 item 3135 item 3089 item 3157 item 3285 item 3009 item 3001 item 3135 item 3151 item 3165 item 3165 item 3020 item 3135 item 3089 item 3157 item 3151

You see, Liandry and voidstaff are a must have imo. I rarely build rylais since its bad now.

IxtaliKing1 votes

Thank you :). I noticed that Rylais doesn't feel as good as it used to. I just need to work out how to manage waves effectively with her now.

Who is Taliyah2 votes

I usually just clear the wave asap and try to roam bot or top especially when I have ult up.

Try to reach level 3 before your enemy and all in when you reavh level 3. It is your biggest power spike. Taliyah is really strong early and mid game if she doesn't get behind, use that as advantage and try to snowball your team using your utility.

Fairyfleur2 votes

Usually with Taliyah you would go Morellonomicon or GLP as a first item, and it all comes down to preference. Also, Rylai's is still good on her but definitely not as mandatory as it was.

inplane14 votes

Taliyah just takes too much effort to play in order to have decent results. Unless you like her playstyle or her design in general, there's little reason to actually play her if you want to win. Her kit got busted up pretty badly on patch 6.14 with the Seismic Shove rework and Unraveled Earth gutting. 6.18 just put a bullet into her knees by removing the Q bonus damage on minions, thus removing the reason why pros even considered playing her.

Sure she does damage early game, but that's it. Once enemies build MR, it's over for her. She's going to tickle against enemies who have a decent amount of MR and HP because all of her main methods of attack have falloff damage multipliers. Meaning MR would reduce that damage to almost nothing.

Well, I use to play her & had fun with her. Even got her to a mastery 6. But then Riot changed her W (just because some people couldn't learn how to use her old W) & her new W just kept fighting against me every time I used it. So, I just stop playing her. There's plenty of other mid laners for me to play.

Wait what changes did they do to her W? Im confused.

Dynikus6 votes

it changed from a unique cast type where you pressed W once, picked the direction, then pressed W again, to vector cast where you press w then move the mouse in the direction you want it to throw someone.

Aside from the change in cast type, this was effectively a small nerf because you could no longer simply knock people up if you didn't want to throw them in a direction, and the cast time changed from when you first pressed W pre-vector cast, to after you input what direction you wanted to throw them post vector cast. However it also was buffed at the same time, because before her W had a 1 second spell lockout that made you unable to use any skills. So things like W-E-Q were impossible.

Oh wow TWICE? that sucks. :x I have a question about her R, how do you ride on it? When I used her R, I dont end up riding it for some reason

Dynikus7 votes

You have to press R again mid-cast. I usually end up just pressing R 3 or 4 times to make sure I ride it.

Dominick Destine7 votes

In terms of design, she, in my opinion, is the most disgusting/bland character Riot has ever made.

Even Illaoi , who is repulsive, is at least somewhat creative. Taliyah is just trash.... what happened to the old days when female champions were made to be interesting, attractive and colorful like Leona

Mistress Madoka6 votes

Idunno, I'd happily do lewd things to Taliyah

Lady Hammerlock7 votes

Put it simply this -Patch 6.14 fucked her up because a couple of patches after she kept getting hammered with nerfs because of a very unneeded change to her W from Double-click cast> Vector cast(which is basically how Viktor E/Rumble R are cast) -She's mana hungry, indirectly nerfed by the changes to Rylai's and the abyssal sceptre changes -Requires tons of practice to do the only relevant amounts of damage she has which is E>W or W>E

  • I forgot to mention that 6.14 also made it so you can also W>E, which in turn actually was an unhealthy/toxic change although made her less binary

Pros? -Her roaming capabilities are amazing -she has good team fight control -Her W is ok peel -Her Waveclear is great after atleast one AP item or a couple of levels

Hrd2H1t6 votes

having a proper skill curve is too much for most players, they want to be busted as shit the first time they play a champ

cardomajig246 votes

She's just not as strong as other mages if we're is being honest. You want a teamfighter? Syndra or Brand. You want a pusher? TF or Ziggs You want a roamer? again TF or Aurelion Sol Much like Ekko in the jungle, there are just strictly better champs to play in those positions.

  • Taliyah's teamfight ability lies on her utility usage. Her Wall alone can decide a teamfight solely by placing it right or wrong. It is not always about damage, especially when you have another ap in your team that makes up for your lack of damage.
  • Taliyah has a better waveclear than TF and compairable too ziggs. The downside of her waveclear are the high cooldowns and mana costs, especially in early level.
  • Taliyah roams better than Aurelion Sol, her wall either gets 2 kills or 2 flashes botlane.
  • There are better champions, yes, but she has important unique things that, when done right, other champion can only dream of doing the same as her.
Sammystorm5 votes

Anivia Is pretty similar. Fills a similar role but with better wave clear worse roaming.

Who is Taliyah3 votes

That's true. Unfortunately it's really not a great time for mages right now, but our time to shiny will come again in the future.

Who is Taliyah5 votes

Not sure.. Who in the right mind would ever think of playing a champion like Taliyah? https://i.gyazo.com/54c19ea7d5e05f3f67f1ac3fa4222873.png

Her E ruins her whole kit IMO. Its so clunky and awkward/hard to use, and even when you land the combo it's just so unsatisfying(at least i think so). She has everything else going for her, which i think speaks to how bad of an ability it is. She has a super cool aesthetic, great VO, cool theme, and her other 3 abitlies are cool too. If i could i would rework her E and W so that her W was a "wall stun" like a really small megaGnar ult and E was something more reliable. I mean how the hell does she make "explosive rocks" anyway?

SaltyKracka4 votes

She was super dependent on Rylai's.

4NoxiousHours1 votes

She was super dependent on Rylai's.

You know... I was thinking that the reason why she needed that item so much is because she lacked damage. Her passive is so useless and her ult doesn't even do damage cuz it's made to be a blockage.

SaltyKracka4 votes

She...uh, she did a ton of damage, actually. It was all loaded into her three spells, after all.

No, the reason she was super dependent on Rylais was that it made hitting every shot of her Q braindead and helped combo into her E-W.

Guanxi7 votes

She's a roaming, utility mage. Her passive and ult are used to gank lanes, and get them ahead level 6.

Isn't that super obvious for people? A few MIA pings and it would let people know that she's up to something.

SaltyKracka4 votes

In case you forgot, her ult is super fast.

Dynikus6 votes

With her passive and ult, by the time someone pings MIA, it's probably too late. She'll already be halfway down the river and be able to gank.

Dynikus9 votes

Her passive is so useless and her ult doesn't even do damage

Probably because they don't need to. Her passive is actually really useful for roaming, and her ult pretty much guarantees a successful gank, or at the very least a burned flash. Late game it can block off entire objectives, be it baron, dragon, or even turrets/inhibs/nexus, or split the enemy team before a team fight.

Xela Syab4 votes

Taliyah is pretty much Anivia without reliable cc, alot of her power is in her q but it's got a major drawback of not being able to use it in the same areas, her ult is buggy, and her w has a longer spell time than cho' gaths q.

Castanean3 votes

Summarized; 1: She doesn't deal 50 veigars of damage within a split second 2: She isn't tanky. 3: She isn't mobile. 4: Her W is... Unreliable. 5: She takes effort.

... I mean I f*cking love playing her, but I can see pretty clearly why others wouldn't.

50Shades0fTrynda3 votes

"whats wrong with her?" i think theres a universal and simple logical explanation for it.....nowadays most of the people dont like to think much...nor they like or enjoy to put some challange on their path... so they pick ... the most succesfull champions(read as "easy") atm that they know for ...and Talliah isn't one of them for sure... :)
