I feel like people underestimated the IE nerf.
It's not so much that IE lost 5% crit as it is that 1 in 5 autos crit instead of 1 in 4, which is a really, really harsh change when you think of it like that.

Until you notice PD got it's 5% crit, you build that, and "what nerf?" Also keep in mind critical hits are pseudo random: You crit more if you haven't crit recently, you crit less if you've crit too much.

Putting it on PD is a nerf to IE overall because A) IE>Shiv is a worse buildpath and B) it pushes power further back in your build, making you less effective until you hit that very expensive item combination of IE+PD. It's a buff to non-IE buildpaths because BT>PD and ER>PD have an extra 5% crit.
EDIT: And I'm accounting for the fact that crit runs on a normalized RNG. In fact, that's why it's so easy to just evaluate the nerf as a change to 1 in 5 autos critting from 1 in 4.

so the power spike is pushed back a tiny bit. big whoop. i.e. + pd isnt a difficult rush for an ad carry. the build path isnt less comfortable. you get zeal, then the dagger/cloak and then finish the item. i dont see the difference over zeal, then avarice blade. except for that shiv is overall cheaper, and gives less of a power spike in return.

Gold thresholds matter a lot. The more gold something costs, the later it can be first bought, and the later you can shove your power down people's throats.
And League is all about shoving advantages down the enemy team's throat.
wtf? wtf? taht was years ago? every adc rush ie. what the fuck? no one talk about i.e. aft? please tell me who and how anyone underestimate that op item ?
In patch 5.1 its crit chance was reduced from 25% to 20%.
yes i now and please no one talks about it
It also only lost 5% crit chance, which is an overall loss of 5% damage (or a loss of 7.5% damage with IE).

Something that I noticed in the LCS. the ADC's will build BF sword and pick ax, (like their building into IE) but leave it their while the work on some other item (usually boots.) Part of it was Yes, the crit chance reduction but also because taking early towers was important and crit provides nothing for sieging tower. (when you have 75 out of 80 AD from the two items that will become IE) and 25% AS from your boots.

"Are you building PD first Item?" The whole Idea of shifting the 5% crit chance was to shift it's power more towards the mid game rather that become such a powerful early game spike. (which is exactly what happened. I also noticed that it game more room to champions who spiked mid game and don't rely on crit. (corki, Ez)
the only thing people understimate is the phantomdancer buff. Most people still go for statick, but PD is massivly stronger. 15%crit and 10%as are quite a difference for dps, especially with an IE.
They not only underestimate the IE Nerf, they overestimate IE in general.
A Phantom Dancer actually has more critical damage boost than a lone Infinite Edge. Cover the gold difference with a Pickaxe and you are actually doing more damage with first item PD.
