Can we address Illaoi?

Before you ask the usual stuff about whether I just lost to an illaoi, yes I did. However, it's definitely not the first time. Illaoi's kit revolves around snowballing off the boosted animals unintelligent members of the enemy team who don't know how to play around her ult. I don't have a problem with Illaoi in general. I do, however, have a problem with a fed Illaoi. She can quite literally 1v5, and if you try to 1v1 her she has her e to chunk all your hp from an entire screen away. What counterplay is there to a team that doesn't know or care how Illaoi works? Sure I can dodge her e and all that stuff, but my teammates can't. Not to mention people always say to not go near her tentacles, but what if she's pushing your towers with 5 tentacles spawned close to her? What then?

Also

Ganging up on Illaoi > Illaoi ults, killing your entire team unless you have some form of reliable disengage. (not to mention her near 100% tenacity she always has)

Team disengages accordingly > Enemy team takes objectives on the other side of the map and Illaoi most likely escapes.

Trying to 1v1 Illaoi > She will wait until you're in range for E and chunk your healthbar with her other abilities unless you're a tank, in which case you wouldn't have enough damage to kill her anyway. Not to mention she can build full tank and still deal as much damage as a fed ADC.

You walk out of range of your soul > Okay, what did that accomplish? You didn't kill her and you probably took a good chunk of damage for your troubles.

You dodge her E > Great. Now you're dead anyway because Q + W + AA + W + Q oh great her E's up again and you're now either dead or 75% of the way there. Doesn't matter if you used any CC on her because of all the tenacity from Legend Tenacity + Unflinching item 3053 item 3111. That's 30% from Legend Tenacity, 20% from Unflinching if she has both summoners down, another 30% from item 3053 , and ANOTHER 30% from item 3111. That's over 100% tenacity in most fights. That means she LITERALLY CANNOT be CC'd. When she doesn't have the item 3053 passive up, she will have 80% tenacity 100% of the time. That means a 1 second stun will last for 0.2 seconds.

You ignore Illaoi > Brilliant. Now she has taken at LEAST one inhibitor, and can still solo your entire team anyway so you can't even kill her then.

By the way, here are the main counter tips from lolcounter.com.

"When she uses her E to rip out your soul make sure to either stand apart from it (in order to stop her AOE hitting you multiple times) or else leave the tether range. Note that leaving tether range will still apply her tentacle spawner onto your champion!"

Still doesn't explain how to kill her.

"Illaoi has a hard time chasing people due to a lack of good gap-closers. Pick champions with high mobility or movementspeed. (this also helps avoiding tentacle attacks)"

Still doesn't explain how to kill her, only how to get away (noticing a trend)

"Avoid standing close to the tentacles she spawns as she is likely to use this chance to dunk you with her W and cause the tentacle(s) to hit you VERY hard and heal her slightly."

Addressed that earlier. She can set up in a location and you can't approach her at all.

"If she is hard focusing your soul, attack her while she's doing it as you can do more damage to her than she can to you focusing your soul."

Not true. She deals AoE damage with her tentacles and Q, and will damage you much faster due to her attacks hitting both you AND your soul.

"DO NOT recall unawared when you are cursed. A tentacle WILL find you, and WILL kill you. (Kill 3 tentacles to remove the curse)"

Anyone who has laned against an Illaoi already knows this, and it STILL doesn't explain how to kill her.

"When she rips out your soul with her E attacking her directly will shorten the duration that she can attack your soul and will thereby cut her damage to it by quite a bit. Then, when the duration runs out you will not get the debuff on you."

Sure. You're below half health now and she's at 75%. Considering she probably only spammed W on you and used no other abilities, she has her full combo off cooldown. Good luck!

By the way, people may compare a fed Illaoi to a fed Yi. However, you CAN shut down a fed Yi, no matter how fed he is, with hard CC. Hard CC does not WORK on Illaoi due to her tenacity and tankiness.

She provides too much. She's a tank, a splitpusher, a teamfighter, and a duelist all in one. She excels in all those categories, and you'd be hard pressed to find someone better (at least someone as good in as many categories as she is).

Illaoi is fine.

Can you elaborate? I wrote a very long post explaining how Illaoi is unhealthy for the game, could you elaborate on what I could have done to counter Illaoi as Jax?

3TrickTractor3 votes

How? I have trouble with Illaoi all the time as a jungle main myself. Don't just make a blanket statement like that without explaining WHY she's 'fine'.

Thing about Illaoi is, unless she has her Ult, she is limited in her area of attack if she wants full damage. So use that against her. Sure her damage is very high, but she has to be positioned, and allowed to attack for several seconds to get it off. Limited mobility means CC is her downfall in fights, especially Silences.

Did you read my post? She can't be CC'd. She has 80-100% tenacity the vast majority of the time.

JavelinJoe2 votes

Are you serious? She is easily CC'd.

80-100%

Half of those are situational at best. Plus if you CC her prior to them activating it is not effective

rayzo1 votes

Wrong. Merc treads (30%) are not situational, she will already have the stacks from Legend: Tenacity (30%) if she is already fed, and she will have 10% tenacity from each summoner spell on cooldown. Assuming she holds onto Flash and uses TP to splitpush/get back to lane, she will have 70% tenacity with flash down and 80% with it up. MINIMUM 60% but that's only when both summoners are up and she can use them whenever she wants for free tenacity so why would she not? The only situational tenacity here is Gage, and most of the time when you go to fight her she has it up as well.

Legend: Tenacity (30%) if she is already fed

Isn't that considered situational

just play yorick

I don't HAVE yorick, and even if I did what good does that do?

Bro, not one person on your team has an LDR. Either build one, or don't complain. I'm not supporting nerfs on the basis of someone not knowing counters.

Here's an example of how my C+ Lucian (me) kicked the shit out of her: https://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2798210212/49402219?tab=overview

I told my ADC to build one. Jax doesn't build LDR. It's not my fault if my ADC doesn't listen

lol adc is a trash role that should be removed from the game

Your math on that tenacity is wrong. I went to training mode and had iron pot/merc treads/steraks/legend:tenacity/unflinching and the max I got was 87%.

Honestly if you have such a problem going against her then play her for a couple games to get a gist of how illaoi players think. You might not think it but alot of illaoi's strength comes from the psychological factor and you would play from that. How they react to when you walk up and W a minion, do they try to fight you in their own wave? Do they let you push and get farm even when they can probably harass you and get away in their favor? A lot of knowing how to fight her just comes to knowing what illaoi can and cant do and always respecting her damage.

I'm not talking about countering her during the laning phase. I'm talking about when she's already fed. I didn't say that you can't shut her down during the laning phase. What I said was that once she gets ahead there's not really anything you can do to shut her down. Also, did you get max stacks on Legend: Tenacity? I didn't bother testing it out myself but it should add up to 110% tenacity total.

Tenacity is multiplicative, not additive. I had max stacks and both SS on cd. I guess we just have different experiences. I can go 7/1 during laning phase and be completely useless once we start fighting. If bot gets fed then you cant do anything. Team fighting would be a great idea if the enemy team didnt know how to fight illaoi but even if they didnt, you still have to have your area setup or you will be much less effective. If the enemy team is jumping on you 4 or 5 man then they deserve to all die but if they even split up just a bit then your power goes down the drain. Even more so when they decide to disengage you.

Now being fed and in a solo lane pushing where they HAVE to deal with you is where things get tricky since you all have to jump on her and she wants that. Best thing possible is trying to bait R and run away. If she gets away then she doesnt have ult and most likely non of you died so if she tries to push again then you can fight her alot more easily. Alot of newer illaoi's, including myself sometimes, will ult the moment someone jumps in, just to have them walk away cause of the long cast times. If you can get illaoi to become trigger happy then you can kill her almost always as long as you dodge. If she is stubborn and is holding onto her R then you have to be more careful but it still doesnt really matter as long as you are dodging up till the point of R where you can just walk away. Illaoi being fed is still one of the most scariest but at the same time is easily one of the weakest jugs when fed because she will always rely on you making mistakes.

Illaoi also falls off hard post 30 minutes and becomes almost a non factor when the adc gets 3 items because she needs to do damage but needs to be tanky enough to be the front line for more than 5 seconds.

Hi,

So the only top lane champion I really play is Illaoi so I can tell you right now, countering her is actually not that hard. I've tried it with several other champions and it works.

Illaoi's main issue is her Mana. She uses it to waveclear, she uses it to trade, she uses it ALL the time. Yes she starts CP sometimes but this barely touches the mana she needs early.

Wait until she has about 100 mana (150 if 6) then go all in. She'll see she has mana and go for it, only to find she has burst her mana down to nothing and can't do shit, then she will run like a little bitch with no CC while you keep slapping her to death.

I've done this with the following champions and laughed the whole time!

Mordekaiser Aatrox Irelia Swain Yorick Kennen Galio

"how do I get her to burn mana?" Stand in the minion wave, wait for her to Q then walk out of it then straight back in after the slap animation. Most Illaoi's will use Q to drive you out of the minion wave to use their E. By ducking out then straight back in you will have made her waste a chunk of her mana, her E is on CD so she will likely back off, and her only way to safely trade/cs now is to use her W (remember to dodge the slam!) meaning even more mana gone. The only thing she has that you can't dodge is her W, which is not the damaging part of her attacks.

Another tip, remember when you go to kill her tentacles that dodging her e isn't always the best course. If she walks up to you to guarentee the hit then she'll be out of range from all the other tentacles except the one you are killing, so just finish the job. Otherwise just duck in and out and try to dodge the e. It's hitbox isn't great and you can easily get a minion wave between you and her which will result in her just using w on the minion wave/you to try and her you to leav it alone (more mana wasted).

Finally remember with Illaoi it is all about outlasting her. Not her clear. Not her HP bar. Her MANA pool. This is her weakness. Exploit it.
