@CertainlyT, Mordekaiser's Juggernaut Rework in retrospect

Malicious Metal··74 votes·6,786 views

Time flies, doesn't it. It feels like yesterday when Riot announced Mordekaiser's rework as a part of the infamous "Juggernaut Update" together with Darius, Garen and Skarner. It marked the beginning of me flooding the boards with Mordekaiser related topics, urging Riot to return Mordekaiser to a solo lane and going over several thematic and lore-related aspects of Mordekaiser and how they should translate into the game.

And back then I was just some Gold V Mordekaiser fanatic who didn't really see the grand picture of Mordekaiser's rework, blaming Riot, and CertainlyT in particular for not communicating the goals of Morde's rework to us, But times have changed, so has the game, and so did I, and I thought it was time to conclude the topic of Mordekaiser's Rework by neatly tying everything up with a nice little bow.

So, without further ado, I'll start this off by saying this: #CertainlyT's approach to Mordekaiser's rework, while flawed in some aspects, was ingenious

#Why was Mordekaiser chosen for this Juggernaut rework?

Some of you may remember pre-rework Mordekaiser. A very obscure champion who, once you faced him, was no fun to play against. At all.

Old Mordekaiser was one of the meanest lane bullies with minimal counterplay. I liked to compare him to AP pantheon that doesn't fall off.

Mordekaiser's old solo lane was as uninteractive as it could be, mostly due to the play pattern he applied to molest his victim enemy laner. He used to max his E, Siphon of Destruction, an AoE 250 base damage, low cd burst spell that was instant cast. With his old passive generating 35% of the damage dealt into a shield and the heavy AoE aspect of his E Morde was untouchable.

He'd just go about spamming E on the enemy laner without them being able to do anything against it. If you didn't manage to out sustain him you were doomed, and all inning wasn't an option either because of his W's resistance buff and his Q's heavy single target burst.

Most of the time the counterplay to Morde was turtling and surviving. But it was easier said than done with him constantly using E for you to fall below 40% hp and die to a r+ignite.

It was absolutely toxic to play against as he lacked any windows of power and didn't interact with his laner at all. He was doomed to mediocrity and left mostly untouched (disregarding the DFG "compensation" that lowered his hp/5 by SIX)

#So why did CertainlyT put Mordekaiser into a duo lane? It's pretty logical if you think about it.

Mordekaiser's identity back then wasn't just heavy lane bully but "6v4 Carry", "Pure damage, no utility" and it was one that aligns really well with one class in particular: The Bot lane Carry

Trying to preserve Mordekaiser's carry potential and some of his core themes was one part of it, with the other being the addition of Interactivity.

Behold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnhlldaNp_Y

Probably the best thing that came out of Mordekaiser's rework. Harvester of Sorrow Checklist: Introduces windows of power to Mordekaiser through it being a lot of his damage and main survivability tool:✓ Is thematically fitting for an undead Juggernaut that grows stronger as he feeds on his enemies pain and suffering: ✓ Has a badass Metal name: ✓

Harvester of Sorrow made Mordekaiser's lane a lot more interactive by giving him a reason to take risks and giving him clear windows of power. He has to choose between the heavy AoE damage or heal, as reactivating it may cut down his DPS but being greedy may result in his demise.

By shifting most of his base kit's power into his W DoT and away from his E instant AoE Nuke Mordekaiser was given more skill expression and ways to truly show the mastery over the champion while also giving a HP based caster an actual way to regain the HP he lost.

Putting him primarily bot lane was warranted too as in a solo lane he faced the problem of being extremely binary due to only providing damage and just relying on stomping the enemy laner to the point of them being irrelevant.

Bot lane introduced a lot more variables in the equation that is a healthier Mordekaiser gameplay. There are FOUR players in total down there, distributing the load of interactivity evenly. The enemy ADC has to know how to poke Morde and deny him The enemy SUPPORT has to peel Morde and try deny him access to his ADC The allied SUPPORT has to ENABLE Mordekaiser, giving him room to breathe to CS and providing the CC and/or utility for Morde to kill the enemy

And of course Morde has to deal with 3 other people as he has to know how to trade, to all in, to farm, to poke and how to play the lane. All the while staying true to his identity as heavy damage dealer with great survivability.

A Juggernaut Carry It was a big step towards a healthier Mordekaiser, and a healthier bot lane as it opened up more flexible team comps and carry champions bot

#So why is the Rework considered a failure?

I always go on about how Morde's rework would've been deemed a success if they had released him in his 6.1 state. Mordekaiser's exponential Q damage had to be evened out in order to make it more reliable, increase counterplay and make it more satisfying W has to become castable on allied units in order to allow Mordekaiser to have the OPTION to solo lane as other carries can (Lucian, Vayne, etc.) Dragon clone had to be tuned towards scaling better and being less obnoxious early game

IF they had released Mordekaiser in this state he'd be probably the best class update, besides maybe Vladimir.

But they didn't. And the way Riot took a long time to change him made people frustrated with the way they handled Mordekaiser With my threads not really helping and painting a picture of a "Doomed champion" of one that was "ruined" even though he's become a lot better and once the dust settled he rose from the rubble stronger than before.

Mordekaiser's rework had the right ideas in mind but him still having some of his old toxic aspects in his kit like his passive being too strong at times and his R wraith being too feast or famine, coupled with outdated Visuals and VO puts him on the VGU list.

But does that mean Mordekaiser's Juggernaut rework is going to be wiped off the earth as they just try building Morde with a blank slate?

CertainlyT had the right ideas and the only problem was that they lacked resources to further push this idea to its full potential. Mordekaiser should be a damage Carry as every Mordekaiser main plays him for that aspect.

We want to be tough as nails while dealing extreme damage. Mordekaiser isn't about utility, he's all about destroying those who stand in his path, meaning that cowards who flee can escape his grasp. His theme fits that of an Undead warlord who conquers everything in sight and as every Juggernaut he works best when ENABLED by his team.

So, will Mordekaiser still be this unholy bot lane Carry who'll snatch away the ADC's crown over the dominion of the bot lane carry position or will he be your stereotypical top lane bruiser with some CC, healing and negligible, unreliable damage? Only time will tell, though Riot being unsure which path to tread on when reworking Mordekaiser makes me hopeful for an actual Mordekaiser VGU that truly puts him up there with other Carries.

In a way CertainlyT was in the right when reworking Mordekaiser and not really budging when pestered by people wanting Mordekaiser to be solely a solo laner. He took a toxic waste of a champion and gave him a place in the game that does not come at the expense of someone's enjoyment, totally destroying their fun for 15+ minutes.

Instead he gave Mordekaiser the OPTION to be played bot lane, where he's provided with everything he needs to truly Carry and fulfill his fantasy of Undying Revenant King who rules with a literal Iron fist.

If he had the time and resources to actually take this further I believe it would have been one of the greatest reworks after initial tweaking as currently Mordekaiser, as so many carry champions, can roll Solo and Duo, with both being successful. And as so many solo lane carries this comes with him not really providing his team with utility, which perfectly aligns with the true concept of a carry champion that has to be enabled to truly shine.

So, I wanted to apologize for the outrage and witchhunt that ensued after the Juggernaut Patch hit. As in due time all the wrongs were turned into rights and Mordekaiser ended up being a total improvement over his old self. Healthier, more interactive and innovative.

Thank you, Bradford 'CertainlyT' Wenban

Give me a few minutes to purge some latent rage I had over reading the title

Edit ok good now. So as the resident CertainlyT hater I can say that the Rework end result was a vast improvement, how much of what we have now that i can credit to CertainlyT I don't know

Ahem However How the entire Rework was handled was a botched mess

  1. no attention given to feedback on PBE.
  2. a month later Lore update
  3. the Title change fiasco.
  4. Forcing a role on the player

How Riot handled it was bad. they have learned from it for the better of all Reworks to follow, feels like crap for him to be the bad example. That said Mordes is better for it and I really don't think his Performance issues are from him as a champion. They more likely have to do with certain other classes being overtuned.

I'd argue they didn't, at least for the class reworks. There's a reason why class reworks are held in such disdain, especially by those who saw a main reworked by them.

If you want to look at Sej, Zac, Rengar or LB and tell me how Riot didn't botch those reworks be my guest.

The only thing they ever learned from class reworks was to stop doing them, which was easily the best thing they could have learned anyway.

I'm agree with everything here.

  1. Forcing a role on the player

This is the main reason why Mordekaiser rework failed. Before the rework, he was played on the top and mid. CertainlyT simply said: "Nope, fuc* that".

Why they didn't introduce a start item with the exp passive for melees instead of pounding it on his W, which is one of the reasons why he got FORCED to bot lane?

Why they didn't introduce a start item with the exp passive for melees

That's actually a really neat idea. I like it.

But at this point I am getting tired of seeing MM posting Mordekaiser threads over and over.

Well, nobody forces you to read those threads.

THE RlVER KlNG9 votes

its more the fact that the boards have such a hard-on for morde now that any time you post something about him it reaches the top even though the vast majority of them are just musing aimlessly about the champion or rehashing the same points

this thread feels like a riot bait to me because they only ever respond to praise. even if they respond to some thread criticizing them on the boards its 99% of the time with a vague wall of text that flips the subject around using predictable riot jargon and doesn't actually address the question or criticism at hand. for two years now morde mains have criticized certainlyt and now you're praising him because what? some other rioter(s) slowly changed his god-awful rework over time?

meanwhile champs that are ACTUALLY garbage like voli/udyr/etc. don't get nearly the amount of serious discussion and attention that morde or whoever does

The thing with rengar though is that r/rengarmains were mass upvoting everything and it was extremely obnoxious to see these posts asking for a revert (a horrible idea) get hundreds and hundreds of upvotes and the whole front page just be cluttered with them - Rengar is also far from the worst updated champ in the first place

Essentially Rengar redditors abused the upvote system to push an actually rather unpopular and bad idea. It was obnoxious and dumb and I'm glad stuff like it hasn't happened since

Personally I think Mordekaiser's W passive is one of the worst Ideas Riot has ever had.

I think the main problem with Morde's rework is that it was obviously rushed alongside 3 other champions. The design team slit themselves 4 ways and worked in an unusually short timefrime. So many of CertainlyT's ideas seemed half-baked or like he was trying to force a round peg into a square hole.

Ariel the Cruel5 votes

So here's a question to all the Mord mains buzzing around this Thread.

If/When Mord gets reworked again, what parts would you...

  1. Want to keep as much as possible.
  2. Want added.
  3. Not care about staying or going.
  4. Want gone.

This in reference to kit, play style, and thematic.

Raid Boss Morde2 votes
  • Slow, durable, and high damage-dealing champion. That's obviously a Juggernaut, but if they can't get away with that, force him into the battlemage class. He feels a lot more like Vladimir than a normal Juggernaut anyways. He shouldn't get any mobility with his rework, but a tad bit of CC would be perfect. Nothing crazy, but every other Juggernaut has some form of CC/mobility in their kits, so it's not asking too much. He should keep some form of a "ghost" skill, but nothing like it is on live. Right now, it's very feast or famine, and usually just breaks Morde's kit if he gets a fed ADC. His theme is perfect, keep it all, just enforce the undead, general of the Shadow Isles theme. There isn't too much to keep in his kit, because it's so bland. Q is damage, W is damage and a heal, and E is damage.

  • Some CC as stated before. It could be a slow, a short stun, short root/snare, grounded, short knockup, anything would be fine, as long as it's not some long, hard CC. More base stats! With his rework, I'm sure they would actually give him some Juggernaut base stats, something akin to Yorick (which is crazy, go look at his stats). I do have high hopes after seeing other Juggernaut's reworks like Urgot's and Yorick's. There isn't much else I want added, I'm sure Riot could figure out something that works well and fits Morde's character.

  • I'm going with either STAYING or GOING, not really in between with his kit

  • His passive needs to be removed if we ever want Morde in a healthy state. Ever since release, his shield passive has always made him super toxic to play against. If you're ahead, you're unkillable. If you're behind, it doesn't really do anything. Because of his shield, he has to have the lowest HP regen in the game. For reference, Yorick has an 8 HP regen at level 1, Morde has 4. Yorick has 21.6 at level 18, and Morde has 9.1. A level 1 Yorick has almost as much HP regen as a level 18 Mordekaiser. Again, this is because of Morde's unhealthy combination of high sustain and shields. Because of his passive, he also has to have a really low armor and base HP (again, one of the lowest in the game). Fun fact: during preseason, Morde will have the lowest base armor at level 1 in the game, all because Riot isn't compensating him as much as other champions for the loss of armor runes. Wooooo, Riot loves him. Dragon ghost needs to be removed, another feast or famine part of his kit that feels tacked on. Most of the time, the dragon doesn't even work, so who cares. It's either too strong or too weak (when the AI decides). Remove the EXP passive, another tacked on thing for a champion who almost only goes into solo lanes. It's just there, and doesn't even do much in duo lanes either.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

Ok, This I like. Just to make sure I understand...

KEEP:

  • Slow, Durable, high damage - Juggernaut.
  • Mage play-style (Vlad-esk)
  • No mobility tools
  • "Ghost" themed skill (Summon a pet)
  • Undead General Theme

Add:

  • Soft or minor CC (Sticking power)
  • Better base stats (remove passive)

Indifferent:

  • [None]

Remove:

  • Passive
  • Exp Passive
  • Q ("bland")
  • W ("bland")
  • E ("bland")
  • Ult dragon/champion theft (R)
  • So basically his entire kit. (o_O)
Raid Boss Morde1 votes

Yeah, you actually have it right. There isn't much to keep within his kit, as it's either too unhealthy or just too bland/outdated. His W is his most interesting skill, and even then, it's just used because of the crazy heal.

I love that last part though, basically true. I love Morde, but he just needs a big update already.

Ariel the Cruel3 votes

Good to know. And spread the word! I'm curious if this sentiment is shared by others (Especially the last part).

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

I don't think most people would agree with me (see the original post). I just want to see a modern-day Mordekaiser, and this is coming from someone with over 1 million points on him. I don't mind seeing his kit completely change if it's to make him healthier.

Tengrichan1 votes
  1. I only want the hard hitting mace skill from his kit in some form.
  2. Not sure something that can manipulate his movement/his own state/stats whatever so something that gives him control over himself or over others. Something like hardened shield where projectiles ricochet off him into a certain direction turning said projectiles into its own. etc. A better ulti.
  3. Everything else can go for all i care.
  4. His ulti in its current form.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

So that makes two votes in favor of Butcher Urgod. XD

DorkunedAuras1 votes

Ok, So

  1. Keep nothing. Let's rebuild him from the ground up as a mobile marksman.

  2. Ranged autos. We should swap out his mace for a bow. We'd then need to lighten up his armor significantly to suit his new, more dexterous style. Next thing he needs is some dashes, we need a new benchmark for mobile carries. I think each ability he has should have some sort of mobility and CC attached, but in return, his damage would be way lower than a normal ADC. Kinda like what Ashe is intended to trade off for her utility, but even more. Naturally, he'd be squishy, but that's just balancing.

  3. Nothing, I'm pretty for or against stuff.

  4. Death themes. He's way too grimdark in this game. Maybe we could brighten up his armor, add a rainbow in his kit, make him way happier. Also, those metal references. So 2000s. We need more references to modern Pop music. Maybe have one of his attacks talk about coming in like a wrecking ball.

I figure this would really be a great VGU direction for Mordekaiser. What'cha think?

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

So.....

Keep:

  • Nothing.

Add:

  • Range
  • Mobility
  • CC
  • Pop references

  • Metal references

Mordekaiser is an Undead Necromancer encased in heavy Warplane, he's got devastating physical might and dark sorceries at his disposal so he should be more of a Battlemage/Juggernaut Hybrid with AD and AP scaling like he does now -No mobility, seriously, doesn't fit him at all

Just a response to your question above. I don't feel there is much that needs worked on, simply updating some visual elements is all that's needed.

Selegun1 votes

A fun kit by the look of things. Would not mind trying it out for myself.

I suppose I can answer your question a little better now that I've had a good while to brood on things. In the end it boiled down to admitting to myself that Iron Man just isn't a passive that feels satisfying in its current form.

If I was forced to pick aha should stay, go and change I'd have to go with pulling Iron Man and replacing it with Children of the Grave. From there, add a small, scaling exhaust effect to Siphon of Destruction and let Riot figure out what new Ult he should get.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

pulling Iron Man and replacing it with Children of the Grave.

Ok, now I'm curious how that would work exactly. "Any champion Mord gets a kill/assist on becomes a ghost?" Not against the idea. But the only interpretation that comes to my mind (above) would result in Shen Syndrome. Scratch that, it's result in Blitz Syndrome. Taken support because he has 1 non-scaling OP trick and a crapping overall kit to compensate.

Selegun1 votes

I imagine Riot would adjust the ghosts heavily but yes, more or less that would be the passive I see for him. If you remember old Yorick ghost was just an ally version of Children of the Grave so I would be willing to put money on them changing the ghost in a similar way. A Red post a long while back mentioned that York and Morse were a pain because every new champ made them need to update the ghosts for the game to function. Do you remember when Morde was disabled due to a bug with Ornn? I would hazard a guess that a ghost was not made, this causing the bug.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

The problem with having it on his passive is it gives him the ability to create a 4v6 as early as level 1. That much power would necessitate the rest of his kit be independently non-functional. Alternatively, we tone down the power of the ghosts until they becomes spammable pets (Reference Malzahar and Yorik). At that point, why have it at all?

Selegun1 votes

To be fair, this is a puzzle for the balance team to solve if that's what they feel is worth their time. They could only give ghosts 10% stats per level, they could tie a death mini game into the thing allowing opponents to stubbornly disobey like current dragon. In the end its a waste of energy to do anything more than ponder what the future holds and make suggestions to see if any ideas strike the sparks to get the creative fires burning once more.

Might be too late, but here are my answers.

  1. Magic damage/decent burst. It sets him apart from other juggernauts, and I think it actually allows him to serve as a niche pick in high elos (unlike most other juggernauts). In terms of specific abilities, I'd like his ult to stay most of all or at least something similar to it. I'd prefer to keep his Q and passive as well, but not as high priority.

  2. Some cc, more upfront tankiness (rather than relying on W heal)

  3. W, E

  4. Can't think of anything I actively hate to want gone, but yeah, just W and E I would be fine with losing.

As an overarching goal, I'm hoping they're able to keep him viable in both low level and high level play, maybe to serve as a model for other juggernauts. Other juggernauts like Yorick and Darius are great in lower elo but have no chance being seen in pro play nowadays. It would be great if he could serve as an alternate carry in bot lane too, but a lot of mains don't like that, so I wouldn't push it too much.

Bot lane Morde should go tbh, It was a neat idea but it just doesn't work in this game. If they want bot lane bruisers then make items that support them. They also need to scrap the whole no CC, no mobility thing and bring him up to the juggernaut standard.
