You might hate Irelia...

But so long as Ranged are able to dominate in top it is mandatory that she stay as she is.

She was created to contend with a problem and that problem still exists if not has gotten worse with the existence of champs like Gnar.

I think after the last Irelia changes she is pretty balanced. The only issue I have is the conditionality of the slow or a stun. Sometimes I think I won't get stunned and I do, and other times I think Ill get stunned and I am slowed.

It would be nice if there was some type of visual indicator, because figuring out whether it is a slow or a stun by looking at health missing on each champion is a bit too difficult to discern.

Anyone who complains about Irelia just doesn't know how to play from behind or does not understand when she hits her power spike.

I think her kit is pretty simple and her ultimate scales so poorly compared to other champions that the strength in her passive and other abilities is completely necessary.

I think this is probably the healthiest state she has been this season.

I agree with all of this, outside of two points:

A) Her ultimate actually scales extremely well. She just doesn't build significant AD or AP. Try TF+Ghostblade->tank and see how much damage she does with it compared to TF->tank.

B) She was healthier after her Q was buffed, but before TF was buffed.

Her having a visual indicator on enemies she would stun with E would be a great addition to the game, given the information is supposed to be reliable to both parties anyway. I never, ever have an issue with that clarity, but apparently some do, and it wouldn't be net buff or nerf to either side.

So she's failed at her intended purpose? Because she's a pain to fight as melee as well.

Irelia Bot3 votes

she has to be to contend with ranged in top lane. They are that much of a problem.

Ralanr3 votes

I don't think she alone should have the ability to do so. But if we added ways to allow others to contend with ranged top laners, she'd become stupidly oppressive.

I feel she's holding that and tenacity back.

WoonStruck2 votes

In what world is she holding tenacity back, since the majority of CC in the game now is spammable slows and displacement?

Its a frill, not something she holds over everyone else. item 3111 + item 2138 on anyone else barely nets you any less tenacity.

She's not nearly as over-loaded as you think, otherwise she'd be pick/ban in competitive with the current ranged top meta, especially since she's extremely strong against Jayce/Kennen.

Irelia alone shouldn't have the ability to do so, no, but she's very close to the general aspect of what fighters should be, once you divorce her a bit from Trinity Force, which can be done by simply giving her a new ultimate.

Jbels2 votes

Except she's also hard to deal with for Melee champs as well, not to mention all she has to do is wait for you to hit her with one abilty and then she'll go off on you after hitting the stun. Once she gets Trinity force, you're done

WoonStruck2 votes

Irelia can't just 'go off on you' after you hit her.

You have to walk into melee range of her, or you have to stand by a low creep for her to do anything significant.

She doesn't have stellar trades if you don't let her use Q as an auto-reset (which can only happen if you walked into melee range of her, or you were standing next to a low minion). She has 0 kill potential if she can't save Q for when you disengage/run away.

Why don't people treat her like they treat Riven? If she engages on you, you can run away or turn it unless power spike is in her favor, in which case wait for her to push you to tower. If you engage on her, you're asking to lose unless she's already very behind.

Any why do people act like hard CC is revolutionary for top laners only when it comes to Irelia? Most others can use their much easier than Irelia can too.

Riven Lanes re pretty toxic to deal with Irelia is at least manageable for me.

I never said it was impossible for melees, just hard. A good Irelia really will make your life hell, ranged or melee

WoonStruck1 votes

A good anything will make your life hard, ranged or melee, excluding juggernauts, who are even more hellish to face for melee, but easy for many ranged.

A better argument would be that her only requirement for extreme success is that she doesn't fall behind, which is extremely manageable on her. Her being so safe into so many match-ups is why she was so popular in season 2.

That's just it. She doesn't have to be excellent. She can get away with being played by someone who "isn't stupid". Out of all the champions that you need to know like the back of your hand to have an edge with, Irelia is not one of these campions. Not that I think she's broken or anything, but she doesn't have the same standard

WoonStruck1 votes

Actually, Irelia IS one of those champions.

Her powerspikes are extremely strong and extremely limited in their duration until she gets TF. You get absolutely destroyed if you aren't playing safe when she's not in a powerspike.

Add the gameplay you have to use in many ranged match-ups (assuming the ranged player isn't terrible at zoning/trading stance), and it takes a bit more to be successful with her than someone who "isn't stupid".

Yes, she's simple. Yes, if you happen to go aggressive during her powerspikes, you're probably going to win because they're that strong. However, there's a lot more depth to being successful with her than you think, much like Riven. Playing against her can seem unfair, but there's a lot more to her positioning, gameplay, and aggression that it seems if she's playing against someone who knows the match-up. That said, her kit IS better than Riven's. That's not the comparison I'm trying to make, though.

She can Q to a low minion 650 units away and then Q to you if you're within 650 units of that minion. She has kill pressure whenever her ult is up; she doesn't need Q to secure.

It's the double dash that makes her especially frustrating. She can hard engage at every power spike like a Jax or Panth, but she can do it from up to twice the distance. So she's got a huge zone of control at spikes and when ahead. Plus she builds Phage and gets high uptime on the +60 MS, so she can simply run you down to engage if you get any silly ideas about CSing. She loses no CS to tower if you shove, so you can forget about that.

WoonStruck1 votes

If she Qs directly to you and can kill you, she's massively ahead, or you're massively behind/glass cannon. You're playing wrong if you die from full HP after she Qs directly to you. Seriously. That's all there is to the match-up.

Irelia doesn't have kill pressure before any two components of TF unless you're already missing a lot of HP or you literally give it to her.

Unless you're standing next to a minion that's almost dead. That's literally the only way she has kill pressure/high trade potential before she pretty much has TF done.

Vekkna1 votes

Idk where you get this idea that she can't trade. She's one of the few champs who can trade with a minion disadvantage because of her E, which reliably turns a losing trade into a winning trade.

The biggest, most consistent gripe about Irelia (for years now) is that she wins trades even when she loses them. You do that once or twice, and you most certainly have kill pressure without saving Q so long as you have ult up.

WoonStruck1 votes

She can trade. Its just not stellar without certain things being in her favor.

She can't ignore minion advantage unless her ult is up, which makes it more than a simple trade. Her E has nothing to do with it. It should just be considered a stun, plain and simple. Treat it the same as you would if you were fighting Renekton, except Renekton's trading is even more bullshit.

She doesn't win trades even if she loses them. She wins trades if you're stupid about your trading. If you do that more than once, you're even more stupid.

You have two choices: Actually learn the match-up+trading stance, or keep complaining and losing to her.

The majority of champions have a safer way to farm than her. The majority of champions can freeze/break freezes better than her. The majority of champions teamfight better than her. Irelia has her mid-game assassination period. That's pretty much the majority of why she's strong. Stick around your squishies and you'll see why she isn't picked competitively right now.

If you can't push her out of lane, just don't feed her. Farm and build properly so she can't all-in you at any time for a free kill (which should be happening as any top laner). If you make it to teamfights without feeding her, you win if you're playing properly.

Irelia counters every squishy champion. Literally cannot play squishy top laners if she's still available because she shits on all of them with little effort. She simply has too little counterplay for how much damage she does, and that lack of counterplay is the only reason she's a counter to ranged tops.

Better Anti nerf Irelia

Linna Excel1 votes

Ranged top players hate her the most. From what I've heard, she's not that bad to play against if you know her spikes and respect the power of her E.

I played a ton against Irelia bottom lane over in Dominionland before Riot removed it (RIP Dominion) and given that I spam Kog pretty much always...

It has always been a tense, tough matchup. But it was always a fun one, too. I enjoyed my matches against Irelia. Really, Kog is way more in line with what a ranged champion should be able to do than nonsense like Gnar. Kog actually pays for his %HP damage and range by having zero ways to aggressively engage and zero ways to disengage. Gnar, on the other hand, has speed boosts and displacement skills all over the place. He's got more CC (both soft and hard) than most tanks. He's got spammable poke that costs him nothing. He's basically what you end up with if you decided to take Kog and turn him into some kind of Vanguard/Ranged Bruiser abomination.

For the life of me I can't figure out how Riot ever thought Gnar's boomerange was a good idea.
