Dev Blog: Classes & Subclasses

I like the distinctions riot has made between the types of tanks, reminding us that that not all damage-soak champs are the same. I read over the article, and think we can fine tune it a bit more. I like the concept of the wardens and vanguards, but its definition is a little vague and maybe even off. It tries to link vanguards as the primary initiators and wardens as more defensively used tanks. The truth is most tanks are capable of both. I say we can refine this with the following.

Edit: Flipped the subclasses on accident.

**Vangaurds: ** As riot said "offensive/aggressive tanks" tend to possess very strong initiation abilities, but more importantly have a STRONG continued threat of damage and CC as they remain close to the enemy (even with their big combos on cooldown). These tanks tend to initiate and stay right on their enemies until the fight is done. e.g. Amumu, Cho'gath, Hecarim, Jarvan, Nautilus, Sejuani, Sion, Zac.

Wardens: Instead of defensive tanks, i'd like to think of these as "Combo/Utility Tanks". They tend to possess strong CC abilities and killer combo's, but at the cost of having a general lack of DPS and a noticeably longer cooldown on their dangerous combos. They can use these to engage or disengage, but then have to find opportune positioning while awaiting their combo abilities to come off cooldown. (Usually near their carries. These tanks may have one spammable ability, but tends to be mostly utility) e.g. Alistar, Braum, Blitz, Leona, Malphite, Maokai, Rammus.

According to the new system, Juggernauts technically aren't tanks, but they have some overlap so i'm including them.

Juggernauts: Melee, Low mobility, that take and dish lots of damage. e.g. Nasus, Darius, Skarner.... AND I think Garen, and Mundo should be worked into this class. Mundo needs an update, but this is the ideal class for him.

Here are champs who I'm having trouble working into a subclass. They all work a little differently, if you have any thoughts please let me know. Poppy Shen (He almost feels more like a really healthy support champion instead of a tank.) Singed

Big question to Riot, thoughts on Mundo as juggernaut?

Vanguards are the offense tank. You mixed that up. And yes, Mundo is a juggernaut.

I think classes are just a way of thinking about things. RIOT also espouses that each champion should feel unique which is a principle in direct opposition to the concept of lumping champions together and saying that a particular lump all do the same thing. No two champions in a particular class should ever feel like they just do the same thing as everything else in their class, imo.

Mundo already is a juggernaut.
