Tips To Improve For Gold

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by!

So last night I finally worked my way through silver 1 promos and landed in gold. Sitting here I'm really happy but I also feel like there is a bunch of improvement I need to make before holding my own in gold. I rolled through silver picking fill secondary and landed support 95% of my games. I played Brand at a 86% win rate and that's how I did it.

But now I know I need to expand and improve on other aspects of league. So basically;

Moving from silver to gold, what would you guys think are the most important aspects to improve on?

Thanks for any help in advance!

On one of my smurfs I also steam rolled through silver playing support Brand with a 60% win rate and I don't even main support or Brand. I just thought he was fun to play and now I really like him. Though I still don't like playing him at support on this account and prefer playing Sona or Leona.

First you should ask, why did Brand support work so well though? I think he worked really well in silver for several reasons.

  • Most Silver players did not understand his passive how and when it procs
  • Most Silver players are not use to playing against a Brand in the bot lane and he is easy to zone the adc and support away from minions
  • Most Silver players are bad at dodging skillshots
  • Most Silver players group and want to team fight
  • Most Silver players let the game go on too long so that Brand gets his items and does massive amounts of damage

You are probably a better Brand than me if he is your main, but most gold players understand Brand's kit and can dodge a lot better. You may find he will be less effective unless you are a much better at brand than me. Most gold players understand his ultimate pretty well and make sure to stay a bit more spread out in teamfights. Sometimes if there is an assassin, they will try to take me out before I can do my full combo.

I guess I find him a higher risk pick in Gold at the support position, because if players account for him he sometimes feels ineffective and he is highly immobile.

I looked at your Brand builds. They are not optimal for a support Brand. You should typically prioritize items in this order: item 2301 item 3158 item 3116 item 3108 item 3151. You can then build item 3165 later along with item 3135. Build this item situationally item 3157. Almost never build item 3089 unless you are mid with him. It is too expensive for a support to build in general. CDR is really important with him early so that you can do your skills in a combo. 20-30% early but you also need item 3116. I don't think item 3020 are good for him because CDR is simply more important early and liandry's gives you a lot of penetration. You need rylais to slow enemies so you don't die. item 3165 offers CDR but no health which is pretty important for brand. Brand needs health as a support to survive long enough to do his rotation.

Anyway general tips for getting better in this Elo:

  • Gold V is a mixed bag: sometimes players will play really well and other times they will play really poorly. There are a lot of players that are still silver in skill that managed to climb to gold but are not good at playing against players that are better than themselves or at least around their own level. These players are wildcards and I do not expect much ever from a Gold V player.
  • Players do not chase as much: Chasing still occurs but it isn't even close to silver levels. Players do know when to take turrets.
  • Objective control is higher: Dragons and Barons will be taken if there is no vision and the jungler is on the other side of the map or is dead. A very common play among Gold players is that a team loses and inhibitor. The enemy team backs. The team that lost the inhibitor will immediately go and do baron and frequently get it and stabilize with it. While the team taking the inhibitor is backing and shopping if their is no vision on the objective it can be taken. Most silver players almost never try to take baron unless several opponents are dead.
  • Make sure you prioritize objectives in this manner after kills (this is contingent on death timers and minion position): Open inhibitor, towers, baron, dragon, additional kills, and CS. This is not always the case, but I found this rubric to be really helpful when deciding what do to. Remember that Baron is an objective that you use to take towers and alleviate map pressure. If you can take towers without the baron you should do it if you are position to do it with the minions. In a close game sometimes it is better to get baron off the map, but in general baron should be used to take objectives and if you can take the objectives without the baron then don't do the baron instead of taking the objectives.
  • Don't do Elder Dragon after baron, or just in general, unless it is free. This is a noob trap and it is a pretty low priority objective. Players will often try to baron and then do elder and most of the time it is the wrong call, because it is a huge time suck. The thing is a giant meat sponge and that dragon's aggro is noticeable if the enemy comes and contests it. You are also NOT IN LANES with baron. You are taking a team fight objective that is high risk after doing baron
  • **Ward more **- looking at your stats your wards are pretty poor for a support: 20ish a game. You should have about 30 in a game minimum and I would strive for about 40-45 per game regardless if you are winning or losing. If you are not playing support 15-20 wards per game is acceptable. People ward more in gold than in silver and your warding is definitely a stat that I see as problematic to improving. If you are looking for a benchmark, your ward total should be around **1 ward per minute of game play

  • Establish "ward lines". Basically safe places you ward early and you keep replacing those wards before they expire, moving the line up or down if you are winning or losing. This is important because not only will you have pretty good vision you have an idea if it is safe to go back a re-ward it. This takes time to develop and I really didn't develop as a support until playing in Gold for awhile.
  • Assume most players are better than you until they demonstrate otherwise (low risk play). In general I play pretty low risk early and once my opponent demonstrates that they are not very good and make mistakes or that they are exceptional at the game and rarely make mistakes I will adjust how I play. A lot of silver players will flash to make plays and take risks to turn a fight. It can work out really well in silver but most gold players are better and won't make as many mistakes. You can say maybe I am too conservative, but I really don't like dying early because I decided to take an early risk by burning flash.
  • Don't resign or be toxic: Playing games out is important for improving and learning how to play from behind, a lot of silver players want to quit prematurely just avoid resigning because their are a lot of winnable games and very rarely is a game determined at 20 minutes. Toxicity is pretty high in silver and pretty low in gold so play nice for the most part.
