What are your thoughts on the Aatrox Rework and the current state of Aatrox?

Image showing that statistically Aatrox is the second worst Top Laner.

https://i.imgur.com/uUvfb6I.png[] https://i.imgur.com/GCEdOu4.png[]

I think the rework wasn't really successful personally, having his whole damage centered around one ability and having his other abilities help him land his main damaging ability isn't really a healthy design (looking at you Zoe).

https://i.imgur.com/cHpMrya.png[]

When you look at those AD Ratios, it is something that can easily cause concern, in terms of balance. And because of this design that is centered around one ability that deals a lot of damage, he has been continuously being nerfed to the point where this champion no longer resembles anything remotely similar to what Aatrox is supposed to be...

###A Heavy Sustain based Fighter

Now all that Aatrox is able to do is dish out a ton of damage but heal almost nothing in the process (even with the combination of Ravenous Hunter, his E, and Death's Dance) the sustain is incomparable to old Aatrox.

If he were able to sustain for instance with all of these resources, he still couldn't benefit from them because of how openly Grievous Wounds is everywhere and the fact that his Q casting can be interrupted due to it's long casting/animation time.

##During the release of the Rework...

I recall how everyone was calling out his Rework Design a clone version of Riven. I wanted to deny it but this Rework doesn't really feel fresh or original, because parts of his abilities already exist on some other champions kits...

His ultimate is the only thing that exists, that resembles a small part of previous iteration of Aatrox.

  • Aatrox Q = Riven Q
  • Aatrox W = Viktor W
  • Aatrox E = Riven E / Silas E / almost Graves E (except it grants AD for a few secs in Aatrox's case)

##What are your personal thoughts on all this?

Normally Riot fuck up a rework by picking the worsts part of a champion and exacerbate them, then cover their tracks by calling it 'identity'. Aatrox on the other hand, was fucked up in new and spectacular ways.

First, he was a very meta champion. Not in the most effective tactic way, but in the sense that he was built to abuse features in the game to be as consistent as possible. For example, I don't think it's a coincidence that the length of his Q cast happened to be the length of a caster minions range, plus ~the size of a minion, meaning he could always farm safely if a bad match up was found.

Second, the champion designer who made him before was allowed to make the exact same mistakes as before. Remember how Camille was completely broken on release, and only started to really be balanceable after they removed her healing off minions? Same shit, different champion.

Overall, I think he's a symptom of horrible sickness in recent champion design: Made to be strong rather than fun to play as, and against.

In my opinion, as someone who mained both old and new Aatrox, his rework was lackluster. The champion itself is fine, but they removed everything old Aatrox had (except the revive but oh well) and literally made a new champion. I guess they just wanted an excuse to delete the old iteration. Currently he sucks ass cause the nerf hammer leveled him with the ground and cause there is just a ridiculous amount of mobility in this game, the mechanic that fucks him up the most.

If only he had ways to stick to people... like two dashes and a better W -or- faster Q animation.... but we can't have that.... Riven only gets a farth dash, a low CD aoe stun, 3 mini dashes and a knock up that can go over terrain, and a ranged steroid ult... that's balanced.

Love the visuals of new Aatrox, looks awesome. Love the abilities in concept, but the way he's played is total garbage. His numbers are pathetic and he doesn't deserve it.

Nameless Drifter6 votes

Overall Aatrox lore, ingame model and Ult/Revive were good improvements. However I would have liked if Aatrox stayed as a Champion that relied on attack speed and sustain and not this more, Bursty type of champion that can also kinda tank with his ult.

I believe it was a lost chance to implement a new unique mechanic tied to Attack speed that could really make Aatrox feel skill expressive and overall good to play, without making it seem like a downgrade Riven.

For an example, the more Attack speed you get, the faster your abilities cast, starting with slow basic abilities from the beginning and then as you itemize, you will feel like a rampaging bloodthirsty Darkin.

Change the Q, W and make Aatrox E a small dash like now, but once he ults, he actually gets his old Q pre Rework, and with each kill, he gets a CDR refund on his E and increases his ult duration.

reaper40421 votes

This. He was an auto based drain tank. Now hes a bruiser that feels like riven but slower. His old ult also made him a "true darkin" which is different now ofc with the lore update, but it gave him a huge auto range increase. Now all it does is revive you and gave his passive a slight auto range buff.

Honestly, I don't play Aatrox anymore because of the way they nerfed him into the ground.

I think they should Buff the slow in his W, providing him with a more reliable way to hit is 2nd Q (and by extension his 3rd Q)

They also need to increase how tanky he is, as he often builds full damage and then gets one-shot.

Reduce his damage and increase his tankieness

(here's an idea, add an effect to His ult that makes his E healing double while it is active)

The second World Ender ends, I pop R(I'm a Karthus almost-OTP), and he's gonna die.

Lord Zeta 13131 votes

At full build a Karthus ult should do about 1250 damage.

Any Aatrox with sense would build a spirit visage, which gives him a total of about 100 MR. This is about 50% reduced magic damage

An Aatrox at full build has 3000+health if he is building Bruiser.

Therefor The theoretical Aatrox will not die in one hit to your R unless he is really low health.

Even with Void staff you wouldn't be able to kill him in one hit.

Just saying, during World Ender Aatrox doesn't regen to full. He regens somewhere about 40%. Judgeing from Yorick experience, bruisers get like 3000 health or so, and Yorick builds more tank(at least more commonly) than Aatrox(builds more damage than Yorick) does. So 40% of 2800 is JUST enough for me to kill him in 1 hit with Requiem.

Lord Zeta 13131 votes

The way you said it you amde it sound like you were going to ult the moment World Ender expired, not when the revive triggers.

Yes, it would probably kill him at 40%, though the Full world ender regens to 50%, which would make him able to survive the ult.

The way I thought of it was that he's going to die during ulti(which he probably would, cuz that's basically the whole point of the ult), and when the 10 seconds is over my ulti would hit, and kill him cuz revive isn't full health. Sorry for confusion. :D

They definitely did all the wrong things. When I think of old Aatrox, I think of his blood well, his revive, and his absurd 3 hit sustain. What did they do? They made his Q a 3-hit semi-ranged ability and they made it his only ability. His new W is borderline useless. His E is definitely garbage after the nerf. His passive I honestly forget exists.

His new ult is fine.

The problem is that it attracts 2 ENTIRELY different sides of the playerbase. On one hand, old Aatrox was the sustain, 1 AOE knockup champ. Attracted players who liked Nocturne, Olaf, Udyr, Master Yi, etc... The rework is a spell-based AD caster that attracts Riven players, mid laners, and people who like one-shotting rather than splitpushing and 1v3ing.

It's a horrid difference, and possibly the worst rework. His sustain is gone, his dash is gone, his bloodwell doesn't even matter, his E was unimportant before and was what needed to be reworked. The rework should have been an entirely different Darkin, rather than Aatrox.

What I think they should have done:

What he really needed was more sacrifice, like baiting a Vlad W, he loses IIRC 20% of his max HP. The slow was nice but he didn't need that ability at all. This could have been a dash, but that would be overpowered on old Aatrox. So I'd say something like a Darius W on his E that costs a decent amount of HP to cast (10%). Or, they could leave his old E alone, and make it so his W 3rd proc only worked on champions, but you could stack it up on minions. Then change it to be every 4 or 5 autos.

His new ultimate works, which now leaves his passive open to be anything. Unfortunately, they basically made his passive into Riven's passive. What they should do is some sort of MS. He had enough damage, sustain, sacrifice, and squish. He doesn't need tank and doesn't need a dash or anything. So what they could do is something weird like MS that scales with lifesteal, cc. He could auto, and if he healed for 10 he'd gain 10 ms for 0.5 seconds. If he healed for 100 he'd gain 100 ms for 0.5 seconds. That's a simple scaling passive that adds skill in some aspects, removes skill in others. Should be counted before grevious wounds, so you can still stack sustain against grevious wounds.

His passive could also be CC. Since I'm unsure they want to double down on him being an auto-attack champion, they could make his passive based on abilities. Something something cc I'm not going to think of a reasonable passive on the spot that comes with cc.

Former Aatrox main(Pre rework) here. I have a slightly different view on him than other former mains do.

I loved the former Aatrox, he was by far my favorite champion of the game. After the rework went on pbe I even left a rather ranty post on these boards as to why I disagreed intensely with the rework. I tried him after release but I just didn't enjoy it.

I accepted that they had reworked him and it was for other players who did enjoy him. He also was well liked by some of my friends so I just was happy that they at least make a successful rework for others.

Them nerfing him into the ground is fucking bullshit for those reasons. It is bullshit for new players who liked him and it is bullshit for old players who liked him. Old players see their champion replaced with a champion that has the exact same problems and is nerfed for them. New players lose the champ they always liked.

So let me be clear on this: this state of the rework is unacceptable.

SaTkE4 votes

I still cry every time I go to ranked. Almost a year since his rework and I still can't find a new main with whom I can have fun and do well. This season I climbed with Kled, but I find Kled a chore to play which is why I stopped playing solo queue after I reached my current rank. Xin Zhao, Tryndamere, Yi, Jax and other "lol they are just like Aatrox, right-click-stat-check champs" don't feel like old Aatrox at all.

On the other hand, new Aatrox is not bad, but he is very linear in his build path and his playstyle. You will always max Q first, then E. You will be useless if you don't hit your Qs and even if you dominate early game you don't feel like you have too much impact in team fights. Even when I earn S rank and have the highest dmg dealt in my team I don't feel like contributed much.

boricCentaur13 votes

Good rework overall made him have more counter play and takes a lot more skill and it increased his playrate by a lot even after the nerfs meaning a more players are staying with him.

Now the current state is not great losing the 2nd q hurt him since a lot of power was in his ability to hit q and losing his healing on minions a lot hurt him a good bit but his q does a lot of damage and his healing is still good riot should probably put more power in his w since all it does right now is set up for q and a lot of champions can just ignore it.

Dangerous Man3 votes

Yes he has more counterplay, but why change his playstyle from AA to caster? His playrate was increasing after blood well rework anyway. The problem was that he wasn't seen in pro play at all. They reworked him for that and basically all Aatrox mains got fucked.

Imagine if they made Master Yi Q a skillshot-dash, his W only work in combat, and his E a skillshot. Since it's a full visual-gameplay rework, his playrate goes up, counterplay goes up, players rejoice, Master Yi mains are pissed and never play Yi again because they changed his core gameplay completely on its head.

His identity is gone, players who want that niche are left empty handed.

Where's my heavy sustain, reviving, duelist who's based on AA damage? Nobody left unless you play Olaf ADC with Zilean support?

Infernape2 votes

He was seen in pro play. Old Aatrox was pick or ban before he got reworked.

Dangerous Man2 votes

After reworking blood well and making him a problem, yes. Only because they gave him absurd numbers, his kit was still bad for pro play. He got all of his damage buffed, his Q had the unstoppable buff added, his ult attack range increased. They didn't do anything to his kit for pro play, they just made his win rate go insane while keeping the underlying simplicity issue for pro play and kept the sustain problem.

They created the "balancing issues" themselves. They made him unkillable in lane but still not a healthy pick. They basically turned him in to the jungle version of Zoe because of their balance team just being a sack of monkeys for 2 patches because they said "fuck it, he's being reworked in a month anyways". He was not good in pro play the rest of his time aside from when he was released. So basically years of not being seen in pro play -> overbuff him -> seen in pro play for 2 weeks -> rework.

fire2633 votes

I love his new Visuals, and as far as that part of the update goes, I enjoy it.

As for gameplay, his whole kit just isn't that good. His entire kit just revolves around his Q, which isn't a very healthy design. His E is designed to help him hit his Q, his W is designed to help him hit his Q, his ultimate movespeed and damage buff could also be means to hit his Q and increase it's damage a bit. I really wish they would add a little bit more things to his other abilities to make him not just a hit Q win, don't hit Q lose sort of champion, because that strays a little too close to his old design, just instead of being an auto attacker he's now just a Q spammer. I wish they would change his W into something that isn't just a way to hit more Q's and make it a bit more interactive, and give his passive some sort of movement speed buff because as of now it's nearly impossible to hit all three Q's in the knockup section with only one dash. For all you Aatrox mains I'm sorry at what has happened because he really is not that good right now, and probably will stay gutted for a long time until he gets looked at again and Riot realizes that his design isn't much healthier than what it was before.

Metallikaiser3 votes

Hit kit is interesting and extremely fun, but designing a kit that is so strong in so many ways gated only by being very hard to play well consistently simply isnt a workable design. Some things clearly need to change about his kit though to not make him so good in pro play and open up the ability to buff him, he is currently in the exact same place as Urgot, who is getting changes to make him stronger but less safe this coming patch. Aatrox needs roughly the same thing Urgot is getting.

TyroneWatermelon3 votes

They killed the champion 3 times total.

  1. After his release was nerfed and was left in an underwhelming state for years.
  2. Was literally removed from the game with an underwhelming VGU that was marketed as a big gameplay update only.
  3. Made the new BBtrox with a kit for pro play, then after he got played a lot in pro play, massively nerfed him because of pro play only and he competes with historically garbage tier champions.

Tbh I hate nearly all of riots reworks. Some aren't bad. But usually they just kill the champions and let them rot. IMHO aatrox was abnormally bad.

Chronabis3 votes

I used to main oldtrox since he was released, so my dislike for the rework cannot be stressed enough. Nothing of who he was remains. Even his theme that Riot themselves praise for being loved. He is not a mysterious figure of war, he is not war itself. He is just some suicidal fallen deity now, which is utterly unoriginal, just like his visual and gameplay design.

Jaspers3 votes

I only picked him up at the start of last year when I got his shark skin. Then they relaunched him and I've played him 3 or 4 times, only in ARAM. His play style changed so my interest in him changed too.

I liked the idea of going into top lane with Lethal Tempo, stacking your passive to 4, then waiting for the right time, hitting an E, Qing in like a mad man and going ham on the enemy. Thinking back on it, I'd say his Q was one of the best engage abilities in the game because it was so simple. You miss the knockup, you were at least in range to auto. It was quick but not frustrating to go against as it's damage wasn't amazing. Also, Qing in may have left you in a bad position so you may not have been able to Q out from a bad spot, so you couldn't just Q in and expect to win the trade or survive.

I just don't get why Riot didn't like the playstyle when we have Trundle, Tryndamere, XinZhao and Olaf who are all pretty much the same but fine gameplay wise? But alas, it's done now, not getting Aatrox back so.

In his current state, I think they made a mistake in putting his revive on a press of a button and removing any kind of resource management at all. His resource bar is just empty and he can just sustain with E's passive. At the moment there's no skill in pressing R to live. They should have had it so landing abilities on enemy champs/large monsters stacked the revive, as part of his passive. Would have also allowed him to jungle more effeciently, which he seemingly doesn't even do anymore. I personally think the entire rework was clunky and awkward.

Barso553 votes

I loved old aatrox.

The problem with balancing his entire kit around a single ability is:

  1. he has no damage when its on CD
  2. it has slow animations and is hard to land, particularly because its damage is maximized by the danger zone
  3. most importantly, a big part of his triple q trading isnt just the knockup and crazy damage, its the sustain. This is countered by just a few hundred gold in lane or by ignite.

old aatrox was also countered by grevious wounds, but he could poke well with the flying wind thingy, and if enemy built grevious wounds he could play around his w toggle being set to damage instead of the heal.

Not much I can think of as a fix though. He needs some cc, which is his w and q, he needs a dash (maybe bring double dash back) and he needs a steroid (ult).

I remember when the rework first came out, I was ready to just stick to playing support because I believed (and still firmly do) that Riot games threw the mains under the bus. Then I gave this new version a chance, talked with the community for tips, tricks, and builds, and eventually came to tolerate him. Even to the point of liking him. But still preferring my hack and slash baby.

Then came the nerfs.

I could understand the damage nerfs because damage in the game is just overwhelming (though it still is mostly in part due to runes and items). But the hit to his healing was the first of many wut.jpg. The concept of Aatrox was and still is that he is supposed to be a self-sustaining threat that charges into the fight with the knowledge that dying, if it can be achieved by the enemy, is a temporary thing. Fast forward to today, and I have to use a magnifying glass to actually see that my health bar is going up with the passive healing he has. Not only that, but one of the ever present sore spots for me is that his revive and ultimate form are on the same ability (meaning they have the same cooldown) and are just underwhelming. See an Aatrox ult? Kite him or run away since he can't catch up to you or just kill him before the bloodwell bar actually has time to restore any significant health. A 2 minute cooldown for an ability that was once feast or famine but has now lost the famine. And Faker forbid you don't actually die.

I could honestly go on much longer, but that would quickly turn into a tldr.

As was stated previously, the rework wasn't successful.

TonyTonyMordecai2 votes

I'm heavily biased because while I wasn't the most devoted Aatrox main, I did pick him whenever I went top, as a go-to pick. I don't know what the old lore was supposed to say about Aatrox, but to me it seemed like he was supposed to inspire soldiers to continue fighting, like a diver would do: go in first, and encourage people to follow (given that it was a good idea to go in). I kind of wanted Aatrox to be a sort of AD support, someone who could grant healing if you kept the offensive, but didn't have to go full damage and could be durable, and had a kit that encouraged the buddy system or else some of his stuff wouldn't work (like Leona passive). Then again, I'm probably the only one that thought that would be cool, and work with what his lore sort of represented, and I guess Riot wanted him to go in a different direction as well, and wielding a "massive blade with grace and poise" "in a style that was hypnotic to behold" wasn't a part of that.

I'm upset that Aatrox got the Zoe treatment and got everything shoved into one ability. Didn't they learn that it's hard to balance a champion when everything is only in one ability and the other three are meant to assist in landing that single ability? I'm probably preaching a bunch of bull because I didn't play Aatrox much, but when he got his mini-rework, I was happy with where he was. Obviously not the best since Guinsoo's made him considerably stronger, but still, there was thinking required when you had to switch between healing and damage forms, as well as keeping the passive full to gain the full bonuses and have the revive ready. I don't have that playstyle anymore, and it's upsetting. I don't know what the numbers were for Aatrox before he was meta prerework, what they were while he was popular prerework, or even what to compare to now, he just doesn't give me that same appeal anymore and I don't have that desire to learn how to play the new Aatrox, or what to build for items/runes. I'm too biased to give a good assessment of new Aatrox, I'm just sad and upset.

I will be honest, I can't form much of an opinion on a champion I barely play.

But what I will say is this: His joke animation/quotes need some attention. If I'm going to be blunt, I don't understand why that got shipped without Riot saying anything about it and it sure doesn't look intentional.

As someone who mained the old aatrox I think I'm a bit biased but I'll say this one is way worse, even if you don't agree with that basically the same thing happened now to aatrox as what happened when he was first released. Saw some good play then got nerfed into the ground. Once the tweaked Aatrox'is old passive so you had to keep it up in combat he was pretty balanced and much better to play as/against, but an item build got super meta and instead of nerfing either of those they rework him.

Even if you think Aatrox is good rn you can't deny that he is so incredibly different from his old champion that it's kinda sad when you see all the other rewords that happened that were amazing and then you get this one where they copy paste riven, make his dash a dick hair long, and make his revive something brain dead by having them push a button and you're good.

Newtrox was never and will never be Aatrox. It was a horrible misread of what the community wanted in a vain attempt to create a big release. It is an especially rare release that has actually hurt the game and community. It has hurt the game bc he has begun to normalize poor design where champs get too many tools without having to sacrifice anything for all their power. Basically Aatrox can do a tank's job better than a tank while building damage, and he can do a carry's job better than a carry while building tank. On top of that his spells enable him to be a strong laner and also lead engages to enable his entire team. There has not been a more ridiculous, and greed driven, champ made in the history of the genre. But the worst part has been its effect on the community in that it has created a polarizing atmosphere that all real fans can not stand. Revert this poorly made champ, that was blatantly disrespectful to the Aatrox community, and move forward turning LoL back into a great MOBA it was, and not a casual action game.

I had been playing a lot of Aatrox before he was reworked and tried my best to convince myself the rework didn't suck, but I actually can't play him anymore or I would be trolling. Not really seeing as to how this "made him good"...

What you just said is the opposite of "made him good".

Because the other guy said the second dash made him good. And it did. The removal of it made him bad. The evidence is quite clear if you just LOOK.

Are you speaking aesthetically good, or gameplay good? Because if it's the former, that's subjective. A pure matter of opinion. But if it's the latter, you're just wrong in saying he wasn't good before nerfs.

They need to revert this change because I saw no problem with his old kit.

they just nerfed him hard q didn't need those harsh scaling nerfs could have nerfed his passive what is a fucking nuke if he lands it on you and I bet he would have been fine tbh.

There was a post not too long ago with some ideas of how they could balance Aatrox and I kinda like the idea. In short the idea was to take some power from his Q which like eveyone knows is in concept a cool idea but game wise, a difficult to balance and overloaded ability. The idea was to remove knockup from the first and second cast to either have a simple dmg on sweet spot or having some kind of slow. Result in taking 2 knockups from his Q could potentially have the slow on his W better so it can actually be rewarding and a bit easier to land. Also, bringing back sustain on his E to compensate. Really like the idea since Aatrox is a fighter. He needs to be able to fight longer with sustain rather than burst. Also, the darkin theme is around blood magic. A bit like Rhaast, he should be able to actually heal when he does damage. What do you guys think? Could that be an option. P.S I loved both the old and new one, different playstyle (aa to spellcaster) but would really love to at least have the same identities as diver with good sustain. Thanks folks for reading
