Since win rates don't matter, why is Soraka's mana burn so bloody high?
Here's a question I have: why does soraka, a support, have a peak mana burn of 66 MPS+life costs before her ult is taken into account? That's crazy expensive for that role and is closer to a pre-rework cass or anivia (both generally mids) than a support. Mana regen as a whole was nerfed this season as was Soraka's mana regen.
Here's why that was bad: before she was nerfed reworked, she could afford for her Q to be expensive becasuse her E was free in terms of mana. It was free partly to allow the mana cost of the rest of her kit. Originally she could self mana-boost with it. The mana cost on her Q is still representing the time when she had a free E. Now in order to do her thing as a healer because of that guy at riot, she has to use her Qs a lot. In order to be aggressive in lane (because riot doesn't want her to be passive) she has to use her Qs a lot.
Well guess what, that puts a soraka player in a bit of a bad spot even if they've learned to work around it.
- I can't be aggressive with my E anymore. By common definition and advice it is a reactive/passive ability and to be held on to in case the other team initiates. I also can't gift mana so screw that guy at riot. So in short it sucks for active trading.
- If I want to be aggressive in lane I need to level my Q to get the most of it (and buy 40% cdr some how) however as a support I'm channeled into buying either an edge or a coin, neither of which work well if you want to be aggressive on soraka because leveling her Q really explodes her mana costs. And let's be honest, if you are playing support "right" you are going to rush a sightstone on first back even if your champ wants you to rush a tear. So if I'm playing support right I really can't be aggressive with soraka.
- Her bananas, as iconic as they are, suck. Their animations are too slow and her arm is a limp noodle when she throws them. AA-E-AA used to be a great way to harass, trade, and be aggressive in lane. Not anymore. Good supports need to be able to trade well in the early game, generally speaking she can't trade as well anymore.
- The only real viable thing to max first is your W. Which forces you back early. And it kills you. Most importantly for this topic is it forces you to be passive.
This is why I think riot doesn't play the game and has no idea what the words coming out of their mouths are. They say they hate passive soraka and they want players to be more active and engaged. They say they want her to be LCSBIGPLAY viable. Now I don't follow the LCS as close as others, but I don't see her picked that often. I also don't see her being an aggressive support that riot wants because RIOT CREATED HER KIT SO SHE CAN'T BE AN AGGRESSIVE SUPPORT IN CONTRAST TO WHAT THEY SAID. Assuming you play right. I mean you could rush a tear and chalice early for her, but then you are screwing over your team because vision matters.
This is why I hate the new soraka; it's a contradiction to everything. It's a contradiction to what she was (a battlemagesque healer/protect). It's a contradiction to what riot said they wanted. It's not as fun as it used to be for the real soraka player (I'm talking about the ones who weren't passive carry me healers). It's also a contradiction to itself. The core skill in it isn't the W (or E as it used to be), it's the Q. She's not a healer anymore or a martyr, she's a weak siege cannon that's constantly running out of ammo (either mana or life) in the early game.
Now I'm not just a complainer. I'm an idea guy. I'm a solution guy. Since riot insists on keeping her Q linked to her W (this is the change that broke her in the first place) and they want her to be active and spamming Qs this is what I suggest:
Q (added ability to existing skill) - whenever you spell crit on an enemy champ, you and allies within 500 units get X% missing mana (more as your mana is lower). Mana gifts are back and soraka has another viable skill to level up early besides her W in a manner that encourages aggression.
