I need help to do better as Nocturne. I always try to use my ult after my team is engaged, so I'm not the first one into a fight. The problem is that I don't know how to handle a situation when the enemy team is densely grouped together in a fight. I can't kill my ult target before I get quickly focused and slain.
Should I just avoid using my ult in dense team fights, and only ult dash my target when the enemy team is sufficiently scattered?

More or less.
A lot of Nocturne's ult's power is that it turns separated team members into completely isolated teammates due to the vision loss, and the ability to randomly outnumber the enemy team to initiate a skirmish. Play to these strengths and try to pick off people who stray away from the safety of their team and/or try to make sure that your presence turns the odds in your favor, rather than makes the fight even (turn a 2v2 into a 3v2 vs forcing a 4v5 into a 5v5).
HamburgerJunior1 votesJust duo with a guy that plays gragas jungle, his ult literally perfectly compliments yours. In the midst of a fight, jungle skirmish or teamfight, he can ult after you do to scatter them, you select your target and kill them. 3 seconds is a pretty nice window to do all that in.
