Vanguards are using support items because they lost their role of Tank carry.

People think Tank is one, like Juggernaut + Wardens + Vanguards are one. That's totally wrong.

Juggernauts are the Defensive Fighters in Backline that shouldn't start the fight and wait till enemy team dive them or target someone. They scale well with damage Hp and they got a lot of sustain helps them Shutting down any target who is targeting their team

Wardens are meant to be Protectors, u can go them full tank support and do your job by Peeling using your Cc to help and protect, staying with your ally adc and help him at all costs to prevent him from dying faster.

Vanguards are the carry tanks of late game, They are meant to Start the fights, they are meant to shut down any squishy target on their way, with all these nerfs and changes, they are no longer doing the job they can't buy the Vanguard items other than only Abysal mask which helps giving them brief sustain + extra magic damage.

Adcs are literally destroying on vanguards because the itemization problems since they got way weaker and they deal way less damage, That's why we see Vanguards using Support items like Knight vow or locket etc

Riot you gotta fix that problem Asap, just take 1 minute thinking about vanguards and you'll figure out how bad they are compared to the rest they literally got no role atm other than being the 2nd Wardens who just peel ur team

I feel like the initial nerf hit carry tanks like sion pretty hard, but now that thornmail got changed, I think with sunfire + thornmail + abyssal mask you can be offensive tank once again.

u can't the damage of Thornmail is no good, Sunfire's damage is pretty useless atm it's good for minions/monsters.

Unless they make new Tank item that only gives damage reflected to enemy auto attackers without grevious Wounds, and get another Tank item that gives an aura of damage to champions only like Sunfire but maybe Curse Cape something like that. then yes they will get back into the meta of being carry tanks who deal enough damage to squishy targets

It's not just the damage, but the fact that lethality meta is back, means that champions who build resist and survivability from the start actually got advantage now over bruisers / fighters who build damage first and can still get one shot early to midgame.

and? what does that have to do with Vanguards?

The thing is if you play tank in top lane and just buy support items, you will see that you will get behind on gold pretty quickly, for being unable to farm and push fast enough. Sunfire is surely weaker for dueling but still gets the pushing job done, and when you combo that with thornmail you can get into waves and push them pretty fast. While we are at it don't forget that abyssal mask gives tanks the mana sustain they never had, while also amplifying their magic damage ( including sunfire and thornmail). As for support itemization the only true support item I see tanks in my games build is locket, majorly because if enemy tries to ignore me I can just give my team aoe shield.

Wave clear has nothing to do with The Dueling. I can wave clear with just tiamat 1050 gold that helps me taking on waves pretty easy.

Vanguards are in a very large and bad situation now they are the ones who can't play their role anymore in this season yes with so many changes + nerfs they lost the Vanguard role this is why they build Support items is to be the secondry Wardens of team.

Then your wasting gold on an item that has no synergy with your kit. Sunfire + bramble vest is pretty strong and offensive early buy on tanks.

Or knights vow and hp scaling locket are op lel

Tanks were never that strong late. In mid they were strong and their role of teamfight starter was still important late, but they weren't "carries". At least no more than a Warden carries by keeping his team alive.

Actually call me an oldie old timer but Vanguards back in the day were the late game gods despite Marksmen having powerful damage. That was all because of the initiation and group CC tanks brought. It all made the carries' positioning much harder wether it be a mage, marksman, or even assassins (when they could carry late game) much much harder. They were also the prime duelist, if you were not Vayne, Jax, Nasus, or any slayer, you're toast vs a tank alone. This emphasised positioning and team work a lot more. This was especially true when tanks finished thay 6th item Thornmail and combined that with Sunfire and later on Iceborn Gauntlet and you'll have a scary duelist group CC tank.

Now having said all that, and as an old tank player myself ... I'm glad that toxic pattern is gone. It crowded out every other late game selection for a bad reason. However I am not happy with the way things are going which is turn all Vanguards into mid game champions and turn them into Wardens. Half of Marksmen's problems are being forced to become late game champions all with the same style of a Powerspike. Just pick the marksman with the highest numbers because all their power is basically the same: Late game auto attacks. It's one of the reasons why we see the same Marksmen in every game over and over with each meta change. Now we have that for Vanguards and every other class. Pick Zac because he has the highest numbers for Vanguards. Pick Cho'gath he has highest numbers for Juggernauts now. Pick Akali with her highest numbers, etc.
