Anyone else find Sion frustrating to play?

Hexs Fortune··7 votes·1,036 views

He has many pain points such as:

Long Q wind up that can be walked out of. Long Q wind up that can be interrupted Long W wind up that can be destroyed before it pops Casting E briefly self-roots him Self-Stun after completing ultimate Easily dodge-able ultimate Situational passive, that often fails to do anything of note

It's really frustrating

Self Stun after completing ultimate

That's only if you hit terrain and not a champion.

And no, I do not find Sion frustrating to play at all. Dare I say he is my favorite champion.

Yasuo and Darius don't get punished for missing their abilities while sion is severely punished.

Yasuo Isn't a tank

Darius is a juggernaut and is semi-tanky but has no mobility and less cc than sion

He has a lot of damage already.

His ult already has 1200 base damage!

Quoting from the OP

Easily dodge-able ultimate

Though i would personally say 'useless ulti that is a brief knock up'

Ralanr1 votes

Even so, he has a lot of damage because of how telegraphed he is.

Nyarlathοtep

Thats bad gameplay design actually. A spell that is one-hit-kill (otk) but can be evaded even when you are slowed is one , if not the worst kind of gameplay design.

Ralanr1 votes

That's not a bad design at all. If you go by those extremes in a PVP game, then yes it is bad design (But Sion's Q cannot do that unless you are extremely underleveled or he's building glass cannon). But in PVE games, that's the most basic design for boss battles as it's to signify dodging for the enemy player.

Sion works very well.

Nyarlathοtep

Well it is a pvp game at its core. And i wasnt talking about his q but ulti. And it might work somehow sometimes but it sure as hell feels like shit.

Ralanr1 votes

His ulti isn't meant for damage though. It only has high damage because it helps make it actually threatening.

From max range. Which is hard to steer, easy to dodge. And like an Ashe/Ez/Jinx global, you kinda have to hope that your enemy is still there by the time you get there.

That said. Because of how he functions and his scaling. Full Tank + item 3147 is a great Sion build for Toplane. Much like many bruisers going Triforce into full tank. The item passive coming in handy when you lumber around the enemy jungle looking for some vision control because you are tanky enough to walk out again alive. And free vision denial is great.

Sion walks an interesting line between bruiser and hypertank. Possibly going full ap or ad, for mains with a mission.

Ralanr1 votes

Except unlike those ults, Sion can steer. Hard or not, he can steer it and cancel it early.

Dont you feel great when you charge in a teamfight and you are about to end the channel, only to be interrupted/seeing the end of the teamfight and my personal favourite, to see the whole teamfight having moved in another location. Makes you question, why the fk should i pick sion.

Learn to macro better.

Nyarlathοtep

There is a difference at trying to macro better and being nigh impossible. Q windup takes an awful long time leading to being used most of the times as a slow. At best the only one that you will knock up is the tank. The carries are usually at a safe distance. And assassins have more than enough mobility to dance AND evade your q.

Ralanr2 votes

The point of the Q isn't always to get the knock up. It's to zone. People who focus you to cancel it or are avoiding it are not going in the direction of your Q, which can be a beneficial direction for your team in fights.

It's the same with his ult. There are moments when simple "misses" of my ult are basically me herding the enemy into a better position for my team.

You act like Sion's Q is what he maxes first. He does not unless his enemy sucks at dodging or he's jungle. He maxes E first.

Nyarlathοtep

The point of the Q isn't always to get the knock up

True but its part of his power budget. If you dont end up knocking them up you lose a big portion of that said budget.

It's to zone

Many tanks can do the same and much better.

The same as the first argument.

Wait what? When did i every say about sion maxing q first? I know very well that he maxes e or w depending on the enemy laner but i never said q

Ralanr1 votes

Then why are you arguing so much for his Q to change?

Nyarlathοtep

Because its weak as fk unless the enemy is cced in the first place. But his job IS to cc them. Other tanks may have less cc than him but its way WAY more reliable. Which begs the question why should i ever pick sion since his cc is unreliable as fk.

Ralanr1 votes

Who the fuck keeps downvoting you?

And it's not weak. Sion's job is to draw focus through threat, his Q design shows this perfectly by forcing people to notice him or suffer for it. Unlike other tanks who just do it.

If the spell was only meant for CC it wouldn't have all those requirements nor would it be so big that you could hit all five enemies.

You are underestimating what Sion does. He's not your average tank.

Nyarlathοtep

big that you could hit all five enemies.

And its unlikely as fk to hit 5 enemies that have brain.

You are underestimating what Sion does

Nope. It just feels like you are handicapping yourself mentally and physically when you pick sion. He also feels chunky as fk.

He's not your average tank.

True he isnt an average tank. He is below average. On a serious note now, why pick sion that has unreliable cc but can potentially ( 1 in the 1000% chances ) knock up all 5 enemies when you can pick every other tank and have a more reliable cc?

Ralanr1 votes

More skill expression, good waveclear, great bully damage, provides some threat even after death, can actually function off of brusier builds pretty well, etc.

If you don't want to play Sion, that's fine. He has a dedicated playerbase as is that does pretty well already.

Nyarlathοtep

More skill expression,

Eh im not sure about it

good waveclear

Cant argue with that

great bully damage

Again eh. Most of his dmg comes from his w which can be easily destroyed. And you cant really wait 3 secs. Q deals decent dmg only if it is charged which can be avoided with ease.

provides some threat even after death

Which would be good if you died . Most of the times, the enemy will ignore you since your cc can be sidesteped.

If you don't want to play Sion, that's fine.

I actually want to play sion but i cant since everyone shits him. Or at least at teamfigths

Ralanr1 votes

I do fine with him. Hell I do great in teamfights unless they got a thresh or Rakan that has more CC spam.

Often times people can't notice the big red indicator in the middle of teamfight chaos. And sometimes people disrespect that you can proc your knock up early.

Meep Man3 votes

It's his thing. Sion is huge risk, huge reward. Everything has a wind-up or some form of downside, but hits like a train. He's not for everyone though and that, in my opinion, makes him a great champion. Not everyone enjoys playing him, but those that do love him. He has a decent skill curve and has never been complained about by the community, EVEN WHEN HE HAD A GREAT WIN RATE! That's a great champion right there.

I'll give you his passive, it typically feels useless, especially because of the MS cap.

But the rest of his abilities play into the style of a "threst-based" tank. Sion's abilities, despite the fact that he typically goes full tank, still deal reasonable amounts of damage and provide large amounts of cc. If you get hit by Sion's Q or R in a teamfight and you're not a tank, you're probably dead. If you're a tank, you eat about 3 seconds of 1-man chain CC, which means you're not doing your job for 3 seconds. It incentivizes the enemy to use CC on him to avoid him, and with cdr, he can keep up his Q and E CC up constantly. Not to mention Sion can have fairly flexible builds because he can be played as a pure tank.

I've said it a Zilean times and I'll say it again:

Sion 's rework was a very pretty nerf from Old Sion who used to walk into the jungle a brawler and walk out a critting, life-stealing, mega-tank that could point-and-click stun his way to the enemy's head.

He was broken before mostly because of his ultimate which was shifted to his passive which doesn't even do anything outside of killing someone because they forgot that Sion had a post-death passive.

The only thing I don't like about Sion is how his damage falls off hard when building full tank. He has to build damage to remain a damage threat late game (yes he needs to be a damage threat to make people focus him), which just complicates his otherwise decent build-pathing. He needs some kind of innate damage that scales with what he actually builds.

EX: That AP scaling magic damage on his W is incredibly weak late game and should scale with his maximum health just like the shield strength. Sion literally never builds AP (beyond the occasional Doran's Ring), nor does he want to, so it doesn't make any sense.

I agree his scalings should reflect his build path.

Sion is more frustrating to play AGAINST than to play as. He lands his E, you're guaranteed to lose half your health if not die outright. This as he builds full tank, too.
