Why is smurfing not punishable?

HeartPalpitation··36 votes·3,490 views

it's pathetic that i am in a gold 5 game get placed vs a kat with 80% winrate over 75 games who is likely a diamond or higher smurf and just absolutely dumpsters my team and there is apparently nothing wrong with that to riot. You should never have to experience something like that just to completely ruin your motivation to play ranked when you have to deal with dumb smurfs all the time

Even the rioters do it, one of them just today confessed to pubstomping silvers for fun on air. they'll never ban it.

During NA lcs.

Zirene said it when talking about lanes.

Said something along the lines of “Can’t get away with it and coordinated teams will punish it”

then said

“It’s like when I get on my smurf and stomp Silver players because I am so much mechanically better then I go back to my elo and get punished for still having the silver mentality”

Wow... :(

Because someone could be thought to be a smurf incorrectly, or they could have an alt account for other reasons, which is not at all against ToS, but climbing requires they be considered a smurf

maybe someone is actually quite good at the game and they look like a smurf

To be fair with this point, I ended up Bronze 5 last season and placed about Bronze 3 this season. Up until I'd climbed up to Silver 4 thus far I've had like a 75% Winrate in bronze and only now have I evened out to about 55 ish in silver 4 about to be Silver 3. It happens I guess.

does this look like a person who just so happens to be good at a champion?

FullmuteAll play5 votes

yes ? look at season 7 I would call it boosting or impovement, but not smurfing. If you look up his Season 7, he still played Katarina, but results were bad. He either found a good technique/strategy to play Katarina, or just gets boosted.

Hammermancer8 votes

or he got coached, which is totally legit

I mean i went from a 30% winrate graves to a 58% winrate graves last season because i took time to learn how to kite

Gibberwatt1 votes

I've got a 70% with anivia, and I'm in the same elo as him. Also, anivia is a lot harder to stomp with than kat. So yeah, he could just be on that hard grind, and you got ground up. Happens to everyone.

It isn't hard to IP trace to find out if they have multiple accounts. Used to be one of my jobs on a web boxing league.

nm10101 votes

$10 a month to get one of the best VPN's around, it would annoy me more than solve any actual problem. Considering smurfs are more likely to spend money on league already, I highly doubt Riot would do something that solves nothing and annoys consumers.

they can't even ban elo boosters, good luck lmfao

How would you try to enforce that punishment? Ban anyone who seems 1000% better than everyone else in the game? What if they just had a good game? What if it was someone who had practiced an obscure champ and one team just didn't know how to deal with that champ? What if there was a perfect peel comp for the carry? What if they're just legitimately GOOD with their one trick but SUCK with anyone else?

And that doesn't take into account people who created a new account to test the new player experience or who want to play with their friend the beginner. Of course they're going to be better than others in the game. But how would you distinguish between the "LOL I ROFLSTOMP N00BS!" and the more reasonable ones?

We can limit accounts to one per person. There is really no need for multiple accounts. Dodge timer? Do something else with life.

My Waifu Vanilla4 votes

How? It's physically impossible to do something like that since there are so many ways to circumvent it.

Not really. Link it with photo id for proof + social insurance number (canada). Basically just do what the Koreans do. Anyone who uses a fake id or steals id will be risking a capital felony.

FurriesAreHot25 votes

That’s asking for a multitude of problems: players would not sign up for a game that requires a Social Security Number, if there is a data breach, someone’s life could be ruined, etc.

big boi edri3 votes

Yeah in KR their equivalent to a SS# is a lot different than in the US. The number they put down isn't nearly as sensitive as our Social security number here.

I'm not gonna give up private details about myself just to play a fucking game lol.

And then somebody hacks into Riot and now tens of thousands of people have their identities compromised and their lives potentially ruined. That is a horrendous idea.

just like how somebody hacks into ebay, paypal, amazon and thousands of people have their identities compromised right? Americans are so paranoid.

Lajinn51 votes

People do hack into those places. You know what makes it less of an issue compared to what you're suggesting? You don't give your SS number to those. I think you underestimate how important a damned SS number is, if somebody gets their hands on it they can easily steal your identity, which is nothing compared to somebody stealing your credit card's info from ebay or amazon

I wouldn't smurf if assholes weren't so common at high elo. Winning is not an issue at my elo, enjoying games is.

So in revenge you destroy the enjoyment at lower elo. Nice

[sg-lux-2]

I like to smurf because I like to climb. I'm sorry you have to face other smurfs, but you have to fail before you can succeed. Each failure against a smurf is only going to make you better. But if you're on my team, I promise to carry you... or drag you while you kick and scream the whole way.

Håppy3 votes

"Each failure against a smurf is only going to make you better." Is that trickle-down economics? That's not how that whole thing works. That's like saying warding is the solution to nonstop ganks/dives. Wards don't deter that, they just let you see what's coming for your cheeks. Similarly, losing against a smurf, you can see why you lost, but you can't learn anything from it because often times, the smurfs you get demolished by are diamond/master/challenger and they are leagues above where you are, so you can't even start to understand what they know (assuming you, and this is you in a generic sense not specifically YOU, are bronze/silver/gold)

Quiet Dude2 votes

Are you talking from your own experience? Or are you making an assumption for others? If you can't take away at least one new thing after losing, that's kind of a personal failure in and of itself, no insult intended.

I get the fact you don't like smurfs, but they are here to stay, so a reasonably intelligent individual should at least try to get something out of the experience, even if it's just experience.

SociaI Justice3 votes

maybe if riot stopped banning people for retarded reasons people wouldn't have to smurf eh?

HalcyonDweller3 votes

I agree, smurfing just to stomp on weaker players is absolutely despicable.

brônco3 votes

playing against better players should improve your play unless you are a too bullheaded to adapt your play

Asudurga1 votes

To put this into perspective, fighting a smurf is like placing a professional baseball player in a Little League team and making them play against a full Little League team.

It fucks up the balance badly.

nyakasgoods2 votes

How would you go about punishing smurfing?

BobaFlautist2 votes

The solution to smurfing is not to punish smurfs, but to address the core problems that cause smurfing.

For example, many top level players smurf not because they like stomping, but because high level match-making and mmr shifts are just awfully implemented, and punish you very harshly for playing too often.

Not only that but dodging becomes so vital in higher elo and no one wants to wait on q times.

EagleEye0071 votes

Fun fact, you do have to use your social security number to register an account on the Korean server. So it's not as far out of a suggestion as you think.

SpaghettiVase1 votes

You know SK has a huge problem with identity theft for this exact reason right?

EagleEye0071 votes

Didn't say it was a good system. Just making the point that it's been done and isn't totally impossible to imagine.

LemurKick1 votes

Couple things, the SK equivalent of a social security number is not as sensitive information as ours here's in the US, and second, they can have up to 3 accounts per number so how exactly does that system prevent smurfing?

Ztoka1 votes

Riot <3' $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Smurfs = $$$$$$$$$$$$$ especially now since RP is the only effective way to acquire a solid champ pool quickly.

YOUGOTKILLEDBRO1 votes

The issue is that sometimes you can't tell whether accounts are smurfs or not, plus smurfing goes both ways, you will get smurfs the enemies will. Honestly just wouldn't work, almost all high elo streamers have smurfs too. would be annoying for quite a few people.

SpaghettiVase1 votes

I'm sorry you encountered a one trick smurf but why would it be punishable exactly? You can't even prove this person was a smurf, they could just be VERY good at Kat, she's able to fit into any comp and go against almost any match up so why not one trick her. You realize that just cuz you got stomped by someone who's POSSIBLY a higher elo than you, there are people out there who have smurfs for completely different reasons. People play with lower elo friends, and people have one trick accounts. It comes with online games, it happens.
