Giving supports their own scaling will never fix the support problem. Period.
Why? Here's a few reasons:
-
An enchanter is a low-budget mage with a decent amount of emphasis on defensive characteristics, right? They're meant to be squishy and easy to kill when caught, but potent in what they do from a range until you catch them, seeing how they're still mages. So far, many support items have been made relatively similar in the fact that we slap heal/shield passives with defensive effects on nearly all of them. Why are our enchanters being made into wardens? If I'm playing a mage, either offensive or defensive, I want mage game play, not tank game play. Yet here we are making every support a tank, and to boot, right now every support is a
tank with a heal and a shield
. In other words, we're simply homogenizing the role in general, and making a new scaling while doing the same thing doesn't address that. -
"But if they just need to be more potent in what they do, a new stat wi-" So the problem with that is that if your mage, defensive or not, offers little to no damage, you'll need an obnoxious amount of utility to make up for that. Does
anyone remember the last time a
support champion was really
strong with an obnoxious amount of
utility? Wasn't fun for anyone to have to deal with all that. The ability to scale damage instead works similar to how we give damage dealers utility options so that all their potency isn't 1-dimensional. If a utility stat became a thing, some supports are suspect of becoming really obnoxious real fast with a stat like that. -
To boot, assuming we did this anyway, and assuming we didn't make the enchanters and wardens that got shoehorned into it blatantly op, aggressive mage supports would most likely become the main top tier supports in the game, at least for laning. Why? Because they'd offer enough utility while providing a ton of kill pressure. Making a new stat won't make Zyra and Brand just magically leave bot lane. They'll bully it harder because there's less damage going around to hurt them back.

Saying "support shouldn't build damage ever" is like saying we should remove hybrid stat items and champion classes. "Mages shouldn't build ad. Let's remove Gunblade". "Tanks shouldn't do damage. Let's remove IBG/Sunfire Cape". "Mages shouldn't get tanky. Let's remove RoA". Hell, that's a good one to zero in on right now, actually. Why do people not care about mage supports building tank stats all the time, but they care when a mage support deals damage? What type of backwards logic is this?
-
Lastly, making a stat like that doesn't work when it's aimed at a huge minority of the roster. There shouldn't be a huge sweeping change that adds a brand new stat for every champion that's only useful for a few of them. That's stupid. And before someone brings up lethality, that was done because 100% armor pen early was beyond obnoxious.
Can't think of anymore reasons.
