Has Riot ever considered just making supports... more attractive?

Mira Arya Enthe··24 votes·3,662 views

Make support more attractive, not mandatory. Have you ever thought you just need more attractive supports? And I don't mean in gameplay because many supports have higher skill caps and better gameplay than some tanks and carries. Bard Is a champion I absolutely love, his gameplay is so fun and his gameplay is deep, impactful and he can even deal a moderate amount of damage. But for the average 'carrylord' he isn't... attractive.

I mean, too many supports FEEL too supporty, and either lack visual appeal or gameplay flare. Just because they are there to support somebody, doesn't mean they have to all look cuddly, silly or like hippies. They can look aggressive and badass, have awesome lines, and deep gameplay.

Even the badass Warrior supports we have Leona Braum, but Leona is dressed more modestly than most female carries and acts like a mother the entire game, and Braum is the sweetest human being on earth. We do have some more attractive and badass champions who go in the support role. Brand Zyra but they are 'supports' and also Brand support is likely overtuned in low ELO and Zyra support is awkward to play and frustrating to face. We have sexually attractive Janna Taric but there personality and skill set is so supporty they won't appeal to the carrylords.

We need some champions who THEMATICALLY are like Darius Shyvana badasses or even sexually attractive like Varus Ahri that really feel like carries in terms of gameplay, but have kits that strictly favor the support role. I posted such an idea years ago for a champion and I have two more coming up soon. But I wanted to suggest this general direction. Let's make a support BADASS and/or SEXY that challenges 'carrylords' with 'difficult' gameplay like Riven Yasuo LeeSin but in the end... is still a support. THAT is how you make the role appeal to the general populace, who could care-less about how fun or important it is, and more want to feel like mechanically challenged badasses.

TL:RD You aren't convincing most carrylord "Riven Mains" to play Sona, it just isn't going to happen. No amount of autofill will make it happen. Give them something they want to play, and they will.

Thresh is saddened by this post. He must be attractive because of his wifesteal bonus (see Lucian), and he's pretty hard to master mechanically with the sheer number of different things he can do.

Zyra isn't terribly clunky and is actually one of the most brutal supports out there in the right hands. She is also one of the few Supports that can withstand the current meta's "bot lane parties", both pre and post 6. Though she does become much, much more dangerous post 6. She is also one of the few supports that can actually carry even with a gold item/sightstone.

Pretty much the reason why Thresh has the highest pick rate of all supports. Every guy who doesn't play support but has to, ends up picking this dude.

They had considered it, but there is nothing they can do to surpass the pure sex appeal of Taric.

He's also the closest thing to a fighter support in the game.

God, I loved using him as one before his rework.

ADCs (and many autoattackers) stood very little chance of beating you if they couldn't kite you.

Make supports more attractive? I don't think you can make Sona's boobs much bigger before it starts to look ridiculous.

If they had a Japanese, katana wielding support with a fedora and a trenchcoat, support would be the number 1 position played.

His passive would be "Barbarians at the gate". His Q is fedora tip: tip fedora at the nearest m'lady, buffing your own damage by 10%. He could be the first support that needs a partner to support himself.

It's something I've sulked and whinged about in all games for years now. Until recently support characters were either scantily clad porn magnet ladies, little kids or maggoty old men, and nothing else. Hell, while it's not the place to mention it the first issue I had when Overwatch was revealed was that it followed the exact same tradition - two attractive ladies, teenager and old guy. All of the edgier badasses were relegated to the other roles.

There's a reason I partied when Thresh and Braum were revealed, and I honestly believe the reason that Braum's featured heavily in representing supports in lots of promotional art these days is because he's visually cool.

Insert usual rant about needing a Noxian sergeant support/fighter who quotes Warhammer

I'm down for dem sexy Leona skins and voiceovers. I would love a rouge-type Leona skin with lines like "Praise the sun, bitch." and "Zenith Blade up your ass, loser."

What's this rouge thing you all keep talking about? It means red in French, and that doesn't help.

Danjeng4 votes

I don't know what standards you have, but DAMN, have you seen the size of Sona's?

On a more serious note, lots of new supports/items are really impactful and fun. Like Thresh, Bard, even Zyra (who's pretty much a low-budget mage).

It's not a problem with the champions, it's a problem with the role itself. Who DOESN'T want to get fed with gold? The whole point of a support is not to get themselves fed, but their team fed. If the support became a carry, like you are saying they should, then why would you even play a carry in the first place? In that case, you're suggesting supports become not supports?

A support is called SUPPORT because they support their team. They are not supposed to carry. You're saying something along the lines of "cats aren't popular enough, so lets make them bark, make their tongue stick out, their tail wag, and a snout".

Also, is Alistar/Nautilus not badass enough for you?

tl;dr A support is supposed to support. If you wanted to carry, play a carry. If you turn a support into a carry, it's not a support, but a carry.

Reread post. Thx

Danjeng5 votes

Ok, I have read it again. You've got tons of sexy champions already. Badass champions, I already listed Alistar, Nautilus. There's also Sion and Thresh.

I'm not sure what you're trying to suggest. Are you complaining about the thematics of support champions or their playstyle?

but there personality and skill set is so supporty they won't appeal to the carrylords.

but then

that really feel like carries in terms of gameplay, but have kits that strictly favor the support role.

Not trying to bash you. I am confused what you are trying to say. Your post is all over the place. From what I can gather, you are saying, supports should be like carries, but be supports at the same time? I have no idea.

"Let's make a female void champion who's a support, but also can carry, and is sexy/badass."

Vaenez3 votes

I think what the author's main point is, is that there should be an effort to make supports/ or a singular support FEEL like carry champions. Not necessarily to have the power or goal to carry the game. Anyone that plays this game can rather easily understand the difference in feel that each champion has, and especially the roles. Carries all have one thing in common, being able to make huge plays that win their team the game in a show of the players skill. This is one factor that a lot of supports are lacking, the closest being Thresh or Blitzcrank as that one hook can change a game. Yet, none of the supports have it quite on the level of a carry. I believe what the author wants to express here is a support that has the potential to make plays on the same level of carries, but for the support role. How this is accomplished is definitely an interesting topic.

Danjeng2 votes

Thank you for explaining, much better than "Reread post. Thx".

I think supports already do have playmaking potential (watch BunnyFufu). Even passive ones like Janna can pull off a sick flash ult play. While OP might not think so, I think supports are VERY important to a team and can have impact. Watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTrjt0bdF1U

There isn't any innate discrimination against support champion designs. As there are also carry champs that do NOT have playmaking potential. Take Kayle for example. Or Caitlyn. Both not very flashy, but are carries.

An alistar can singlehandedly win a game with a well placed pulverize, headbutt, or trample-stun. Or how about Brand burning down whole teams?

Whoa, that's sexist - said the femminazi

Mira Arya Enthe4 votes

vOmvbrawfU7 votes

I know lol. But you're talking about 2016 here. The Pokemon Go screen saver was changed because too many people were bitching that her butt was too big. Why do you think the last female champs haven't been that sexually appealing? They don't want to offend anyone by "setting an unrealistic image of women".

Mira Arya Enthe3 votes

Oh okay. I'm just talking about appealing in general to the average player. I stay out of politics.

Essentially, what you are asking for is a support champion that can hard carry and look good while doing it. The problem with this is that OPINION is the main component and some people will have different ideas about what looks good. I am not against your post however, and personally I think it is well structured and displays your Arguement well.

However my problem with it is that I think that hard carrying is not what support is for, it's for giving your team the bonus they need to play better, and this doesn't mean just sitting there healing, for example a Bard ultimate or a Soraka heal, or thresh hook can turn whole team fights around with just one good placement, for example hooking an ADC into the front or stunning their whole team to get extra hits. On top of that, Ideally there wouldn't be a hard carry and a team would win by working together, a role where support is key, this much is obvious and personally I think that if you want to be a "hard carry" solo pentakiller then support just isn't the position for you.

Onto the matter of how a champion looks, some people find different things cool. This opinion problem makes it too hard for RIOT to make a champion that everyone likes. I think you may either have to submit an idea to RIOT or just hope that one day there would be a champ that you really like.

Big Lincoln2 votes

they would probably be at a thematic disconnect if they looked like they were hardcore gladiators but then tossed around heals

riot's apparently against buffs and debuffs so don't expect a lot of support variety

Mira Arya Enthe2 votes

Only for the uncreative. I think Rito is more creative than that. I'm working on a support with a badass thematic and heavy mechanics that practically cannot function in other roles. But work. So it will be about midnight to post.

Papa Andrei2 votes

Okay i think I get what you mean.

We need someone who is attractive to PLAY, Like Fio, Varus, and Garen (Not Urgot or old Yorick). But they also need to feel impactful, not like Sona or Soraka, but more like Thresh and Taric. But someone that also has that feeling of carry and badassness that Riven, Yasuo and Fio portray right?

Maybe some sort of Warlord? Thematic look at Warlord Shen, and have that thematic, but with a more support orientated role that feels like you have lots of options and someone who has the decision making of Bard, the feel of Blitz (getting that hook always feels good.)

Hope i got this right :)

Fokkusu seishin1 votes

I think a big thing is that support abilities that feel impactful are few and far between. And most of the ones that are contained to being ultimates. For example sona's kit doesn't feel super impactful except her ULT. Or just seems to me that going from a character like kha'zix to a character like lulu or even Leona is a giant turn off for mechanics and impact

Not to say there isn't abilities like that. Thresh's hook feels very impactful when you land it and Leona in the early game can feel pretty impactful with a full stunlock for a kit. I just feel like there should be more then Braum, Leona, and thresh

Atleast for me, the champions them self certainly are NOT the issue. I like playing those champs. What i don't like is haveing so many mandatory items that force my builtpath while also only haveing 5 inventory slots because of item 2055 , while haveing vision duty with poor tools for it(item 2049 only sucks, 3 stacks are just to little, you have to back every 2 min to refill it, it's tedious). Beeing on a very low income isn't great either, though i can deal with that, but consistantly beeing underleveld and needing help from allies for everything you do because any opponent will kill you 1v1 thx to the xp+gold difference is very annoying aswell, which gets worse by the fact that most supports can peel great for others but lack escapes for them selfs.

I think they best way to make support more appealing is to buff sightstone with some refilling mechanic so you don't have to recall24/7 if you want proper vision, and to finally ad an extra inventory slot for item 2055 , with it no longer revealing invis, there is no reason to not get that extra slot. Working on gold and especially XP gain also would help alot, and imo itemisation also can use changes, to much mandatory stuff, to much things to rush. Maybe GP/5 items and suightstone should get merged together, like item 2303 and co already do, while item 3092 and co become normal items with better stats instead of the gp/5. I also dislike the trend to powerfull actives on else poor items. Imo items should bolster the existing kit of a champion, not ad a second skillset. It feels like it doesn't matter that much what champ you use, but more what items you get in that role, as half your abillitys are item actives. I also find it a bit stressfull to play with 4+ actives...I'd really prefer more raw stats or atleast passives that simply amplify what the champ already does rather than allowing him to do something entierly different. Maybe introduceing a new stat that is used for utillity scaleings instead of ap and therefor buffing the ap-scaleings for damage would work(the %increased healing/shielding is already a step in the right direction here, though to specific imo)

TL;DR: The 'support' champions are not the issue, it's the position it's self with it's low gold/xp income and forced item builts that makes it unatractive. Once more: #The 'support' champions are perfectly fine and fun, the issue is the position not the champs!
