Lulu is pretty fun IMO, shes free currently and she has great poke in the laning phase and good utility too.
Get some rp and buy the packs rather than going for single champions.
Soraka is a cheep first buy. Thresh and Leona are also popular as champs that can make a major impact or "carry" as support. Thresh particularly is constantly popular but requires a lot of skill and practice.
I would rather a higher ranked player confirm this for me, but I think that's accurate support information.
Morg and Leona are probably the best for newer players. Annie as well. Personally I just bought Blitzcrank and I have a blast playing him.
Leona is a great support to pick up and start with. Her E-Q combo is fairly easy to get used to and her shield makes laning with her rather forgiving if you make mistakes.
Morgana can be good as an AP support, Janna and Soraka as cheap utility supports.

I main support and its not the easiest role to play. I would recommend someone fairly easy to use in the support role to start with.
is about as easy as they come when getting started. She is easy to bully with and you only need to worry about her ult on when to use or not use. There is obviously a lot more to playing her good versus playing her well though but she would certainly help you get the basics of the support role down.
If you would like a bit more impact in the support role pick up
. She isn't as easy as Sona but if you can get used to positioning her well you can pick her up fairly easy.
Is a pretty straight forward CC tanky support. It will take you longer to master her because you need to be able to understand when to peel and when to engage as her but once you understand when and where those actions need to happen you will be in a good place.
