@Riot question: What was the design rationale behind LP and leagues rather than just MMR?

One thing I've never been able to figure out is why exactly the decision was made to hide MMR, but still use it for matchmaking, and have the whole league/LP/promotion series system on top of it.

Anyone with a red name able to chime in? What was the goal, do you think it was met, and what do you think of the current and future viability of that system?

Riot Socrates "LEAGUE SYSTEM

In what ways is leagues better?

• All players have immediate achievable goals once they’re in a league and have frequent opportunities to feel competent as they progress. • All players are divided into smaller leagues typically including some of their friends making progression feel more meaningful. • Players are punished for queue dodging in a way that makes more sense in terms of progression. Again this reduced dodge rates dramatically. • Promotional series create spikes in intensity which make the overall experience more fun and rewarding to participate in. • The system shields players from ladder anxiety once they’ve reached a new tier and has some protections in place to keep them from instantly falling out of a division once promoted. • Losing while still not a great experience is overall less punishing." A-ha! That first post wasn't coming up in my searches.

I take issue with roughly half of these, but at least the reasoning is explained. Thanks!

Its proven to get more people to do ranked ladders and to stick with them for a longer time. There's a reason pretty much every game has it like this now, I wouldent mind if it showed MMR but I know a lot of players strongly disagree with where the system them placed. Folks don't seem to get its a self correcting system that requires enough games to recoard information so it can counter RNG to get a feel for how good you are. It does not start knowing how good you, the end result is supposed to be your playing at your skill, not the start.

I guess my main beef with it is the entire idea of promo games. All you need are two trolls out of three games (which is NOT a rare occurrence), and you are denied advancement.

A lot of folks will tell you its to slow the ranked climb. Truthfully it accomplishes a few extra things. It helps the system match folks to tiers their MMR is close to. I feel a good range of being close to skill where it becomes more difficult to climb is 2-4 divisions depending on what mmr. The Promos hurt bad luck but good players, but they are good so it assumes they will make it back to promo and win 1 out of 2 games after it gives them the free win. This step is added to help reduce bad luck, having promos can slow a lucky players climb. People getting placed to high are unfun, they cant compeate and they drag their teammates down with them.

Not only this but the promos allow for Division skipping to get players the system had rated to low into a closer mmr.

I encourage you to look at systems for why they exist. I hate DLC, passionately because its just abused so much, and a big reason we have it? used games. Devs had to find some way to keep a profit when places like game stop would make a profit off a copy of a game multiple times and devs got none of it. I get why people did it, I still don't enjoy it, but I get it.

For people that need a carrot on the stick / shiny baubles instead of just listing off a 4-digit number when describing where they rank. It's easier to understand for laymen too.

I assume part if it is also that "I'm plat and your Bronze Scrub" just sounds so much better then" I'm 1850 and your 1100 scrub."

Karunamon:

If a red shows up here and says anything, the chance of them actually telling the truth is quite slim. that is because league system's goal is kinda nefarious.
