Would giving otherwise exclusively AD champions an ability that scales with AP be a good idea?

Hey fellas, dipshit here. Ever since the Urgot rework removed his one and only AP ratio, I've wondered if it'd be a good idea to give champions that currently only have abilities scaling with AD, have at least one if not more abilities scaling with AP.

The goal with this post is to increase item diversity and allow for more creative builds, but I do know that some of these suggestions might be problematic.

Basically, this post is just going to be me spitballing suggestions for changes to certain abilities to scale with AP, instead of (only) scaling with AD, and then you guys tell me if it's a good or a bad idea.

> #1. Aatrox

> Passive - Deathbringer Stance:

> * Damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage.

> * Deals an additional 4% of target's maximum health per 100 bonus AP.

> W - Infernal Chains:

> * Damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage.

> * Scaling changed to 50% bonus AP ratio (100% bonus AP ratio for both instances of damage) from 40% AD ratio (80% AD ratio for both instances of damage).

> * Slow percentage is increased by 5% per 100 bonus AP.

> E - Umbral Dash:

> * Healing percentage is increased by 5% per 100 bonus AP.

This change allows for some up-front single target burst damage as well as a little bit of extra CC and sustain when building AP, whereas if you want more sustained damage in a teamfight, you're better off just building regular AD.

> #2. Camille

> Passive - Adaptive Defenses:

> * Shields for an additional 5% of maximum health per 100 bonus AP.

> Q - Precision Protocol:

> * Bonus Movement Speed percentage increased by 5% per 100 bonus AP.

> E - Hookshot/Wall Dive:

> * Damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage.

> * Scaling changed to 100% bonus AP from 75% bonus AD.

This change allows for more survivability and mobility, whereas you'd deal more damage overall by going AD.

> #3. Darius

> #4. Draven

I couldn't find any satisfying places to give them an AP ratio. Unchanged.

> #5. Garen

> R - Demacian Justice:

> * Now scales with 100% of your bonus AP.

Yes. The meme shall be made real.

> #6. Illaoi

> Passive - Prophet of an Elder God:

> * Tentacles now scale with 100% of your bonus AP.

> * Tentacle damage type is now Adaptive.

This change makes Illaoi able to fill out the role of a Magic Damage dealer if her team has an excess of AD, however, it will her very vulnerable and she won't synergize with a lot of the rest of her kit.

> #7. Kalista

> W - Sentinel:

> * Soul-Mark deals an additional 5% of target's maximum health per 100 bonus AP.

> R - Fate's Call:

> * Now deals 100 / 200 / 300 (+ 100% bonus AP) Magic Damage.

This change is rather miniscule and wouldn't really make full AP Kalista a viable option as the rest of her kit won't really synergize with it, but it does make it so AP isn't completely useless on her.

> #8. Kayn

> #9. Kindred

> #10. Kled

> #11. Olaf

> #12. Pyke

I couldn't find any satisfying places to give them an AP ratio. Unchanged.

> #13. Riven

> Passive - Runic Blade:

> * Damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage (still scales with AD).

> W - Ki Burst:

> * Damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage.

> * Scaling changed to 100% bonus AP from 100% bonus AD.

> E - Valor:

> * Now scales with 100% bonus AP in addition to 100% bonus AD.

> R - Blade of the Exile/Wind Slash:

> * Wind Slash damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage.

> * Wind Slash now scales with 100% AP (maximum of 300% bonus AP based on target's missing health). Still scales with AD.

This change makes Riven more of a hybrid character than her current Physical Damage only, which fits her really well given she has a Runic Blade and she uses Wind Magic.

> #14. Talon

> #15. Vayne

> #16. Xayah

> #17. Zed

I couldn't find any satisfying places to give them an AP ratio. Unchanged.

> #17. Urgot

> Q - Corrosive Charge:

> * Damage type changed to Magic Damage from Physical Damage.

> * Now scales with 100% AP.

> W - Purge:

> * Shield strength now scales with 100% AP in addition to maximum health scaling.

A minor change, this probably won't make full AD Urgot viable, but you do get a lot of poke damage.

Well, that's it.

Like I've said, these changes are primarily meant to increase item diversity and allow for more creative builds, but some of them I really couldn't find any way to incorporate AP into their kit.

Edit: Only added two poll options by accident. Just read the first option as "yes" and the second option as "no".

There is no option in your poll for it not being a good idea, which seems...odd. Edit: I see that this was a mistake. Carry on!

I do not support this idea (in most cases, and in all the specific casts presented here).

One of the reasons that this isn't done in many cases is due to clearer counter-itemization and defining champion strengths/weaknesses. You build armor to survive against Aatrox. If he suddenly has meaningful magic damage, you have to hybridize your defense, which is a strength that some champions (Jax, Kayle, etc) have, but Aatrox is not designed to have. It also makes things like armor penetration or lethality less appealing to those champions, because there's less incentive to get them.

The other important point is that AP ratios are given when a champion is intended to have a viable off-build, or when they're intended to pick up items that may give some AP that you don't want to go to waste. Master Yi, for example, might pick up a Rageblade, so giving him some ability power scaling seems like a strong choice. Aatrox, Camille, Kalista, Riven, Urgot, Illaoi, and Garen won't be picking up any AP itemization -- and AP ratios wouldn't even really tempt them save for maybe Guinsoo's Kalista -- so there's really nothing to be gained from doing so save tempting them into builds that simply aren't good.

Simply put, no.

Other, older champions have such abilities for one reason and one reason only: Trinity Force used to provide a little bit of AP. And with that, it was a good way to put a little bit of power into something like Ashe's ultimate when she bought Trinity without making it have to scale with her AD.

Now, though, that isn't the case. There are two hybrid items, and they're directly linked to a relatively small pool of champions that can build them. None of which are the champions you've suggested. Giving them AP scaling would only encourage legitimate trolling, and alternatively replacing one AD scaling with AP would effectively remove the ability's item scaling. Or in the case of your Adaptive suggestions, it would simply make the champion completely overpowered like Kai'sa. Champions are not supposed to be able to swap damage types. That is directly opposed to the concept of defense items.

All in all, no, it would not be a good idea. Maybe if this were a player vs. AI game, sure. The ability to change your damage type to suit the enemies is abundant in many games. But in a PvP game where there's an entire class of champions who must rely on knowledge of the enemy's damage type to do their job, that doesn't work.

Imagine playing a tank and outplaying an Illaoi, you build your sunfire early only to find out she just demolishes you with half an item because she's building AP. It'd make getting ahead as a tank a punishment. It'd give the enemy the ability to punish you as if you were a brand new player who still doesn't know that green means AP and orange means AD, just because they picked that champion.

Tentacles now scale with 100% of your bonus AP.

You don't want this to happen.

Item diversity so easily turns into champs abusing items and making these items being nerfed for their original users too.

No thanks, Rioters already make their balance work harder than other games by not making only ranged/melee's items and neither only ap's or ad's items like on Smite.

Oh, and my pc is back.

ahem No. at least, for the majority of the changes you’ve reccoemmended. Most of these are just not ok.
