Remember the random increase in AP-item prices?

When preseason started, and ADCs got a lot of cool stuff, all mage-items had their price increased by about 200 gold. I remember most of community were baffled with the change, even though Riot said it was "because of higher gold income". However, it HAS showed that mages in general were pretty shafted by the change. Let me explain:

Champions with item 3165 or item 3174 as CDR/mana sustain and item 3135 item 3089 as damage core are - generally - doing pretty bad right now. I am talking about the following champions: Orianna Xerath Syndra Ziggs VeigarViktor Karma. Viktor and Ori are still in competitive play, but the others are barely or never seen. In soloqueue, the same is true with the champions rarely seen (only mains playing them), and still does below average. The champs who does really well with the listed core items are Lux and Ahri, and honestly, both champions were overbuffed in the past.

So if you want to succeed as AP-based, you pretty much need to use the buffed items item 3027 or item 3100. This is for example what Twisted Fate does, and Annie/Malz/Morg/Liss/Anivia has used ROA in - well, ages.

It's time to revert the changes. The price increase caused the item 3092 madness, but now that was toned down. Don't wait 4 months to make Orianna Xerath Syndra Ziggs VeigarViktor Karma useful again, make their items cheaper and nerf Lux and Ahri accordingly.

In all likelihood, the only reason Viktor and Orianna are still played professionally is because they can provide wave clear during sieges, a bit of utility, and a boatload of really quick damage to multiple targets in fights, all while staying relatively safe. Most of the others don't have kits as versatile, and trend towards one speciality over the others.

Viktor, Ziggs, Xerath and Syndra are all high damage, waveclear, long range, a bit utility mages, with a bit different strengths. When i first watched Worlds in S4, all could be played (Viktor could if he wasn't bugged) depending on which strength you wanted. That diversity is gone now in pro play, and i wouldn't hurt to get it back - and it could, if 2 items could be completed a little sooner than Nexus BOOM.

Ori has a special utility in turning anyone into an initiator, and will likely never be completely unviable.

Meanwhile Lux, Ahri and TF/ Vel Koz are the 3 best mid laners... so shafted kek. The AP item price increase didnt cause the item 3092 madness, item 3092s broken active did lol

It's a combo of both really, I don't remember the name of the item but another item had the same op active w/ 80 ap and 10% cdr and no one ever bought it.

Because it had a longer cooldown, no mana regeneration and no gold generation mechanic. And was 200 gold more expensive.

Realistically, the price for getting FQC during 5.22 - 5.24 was realistically 1200-1500 gold, depending on how well you could use the passive proc. It was like old Kage's Lucky Pick, which also partially paid for itself.

The only reason Syndra, Ziggs, and Karma are bad is that Riot nerfed them a long time ago. They weren't seeing play before the item changes, they're not seeing play now. All of the other mages (the ones the item changes might have made an effect on) are fine.

No.Because Lux and Ahri isn't fine because so strong.

Likewise, they were strong before the item changes, and they are still strong now. Item changes did not affect them in any way.

You are right in that the champions didn't go from played every game -> never played, they went from rarely -> never. A long series of direct and indirect nerfs for the mentioned champs have pushed them too long towards unviability. They can all still be played and can still do well, but an indirect buff to them all wouldn't hurt the slightest, and IMO make the game better, IF OfC Ahri Lux are compensation-nerfed (what is the reason for these champions to be much stronger than other mages?)

+1 for lovely pun, lol.

Ok seriously though, I agree , AP items took a beating this season and it shows in the prevalence (Or absence) of a lot of champions.

You're supposed to go RoA on Orianna dude. And if your against a zed you go tear into zhonyas. I completely disagree with the idea that they're shafted. My favorite champions to have on my team are mages because of how efficient they are.
