Frozen Mallet Rework

It's time that one of the least used items steps into the light! The Frozen Mallet, which at one time was dominant among most laners because of the perma slow, should be useful again. With the advent of Movement Steal, there are now the means to return Mallet to what it once was without making it overpowered.

Old Stats: +700 health +30 attack damage Unique Passive – Icy: Your basic attacks slow your target's Movement Speed by 40% for 1.5 seconds (30% slow for ranged attacks).

Build Path: item 1028 + item 1037 + item 1011 The cost is 3300G but the gold value for the stats given is 2947G.

My suggestion: +700 health +30 attack damage Unique Passive – Icy: Your basic attacks steal 20% of your target's Movement Speed for 1.5 seconds (10% for ranged attacks).

Build Path: item 3044 + item 1011 The cost would be reduced to 2800G (maybe 2900G).

Movement Steal isn't as good as a slow. They can escape easier and you'll stick just as well as when it was a 40% slow. You will be able to deal less damage to enemies before they run under their turret. As for the build path I think it should once again be built out of Phage. This only makes sense as far as a build path goes, as Phage gives all of the stats that Mallet does. This item is still expensive but won't spell toxicity where laning is concerned. As far as the new Jungle, I think that it will give tanks a needed buff in a damage oriented meta, Skarner, Shyvana, and Udyr are just three champions that would love this item.

Right now this item is a newb trap. It gives great stats but is outclassed in cost by Iceborn Gauntlet. While I don't use this item (ever) I really love what it gives. I want to use it but cannot justify paying the immense cost. The change from a slow to MS steal is in fact a nerf so the already justified cost reduction merited even more.

Please vote yes to this and give the thread an upvote. I'm (prematurely) excited about the changes this item could get and I cannot wait to use the new Frozen Mallet.

The problem with making frozen mallet not suck is that it would help tanky fighters stick to adcs and riot is opposed to tanky fighters ever being able to solo anything. Their role is to be shit in lane then force a bunch of kiting in one or two midgame teamfights then be shit again as soon as last whisper and void staff are purchased.

This pretty much sums it up.

The only legit reason why i never build this on any champion, is not because its low stats, its because those particular stats are not worth the time spent collecting the gold for it, other than that, i love it's passive like, ALOT.

if only this time had more legit build, like armor and health instead of the AD, cause i feel this is a Tank item, and Tanks are not fond of AD. and instead of putting a small amount of AD, why not Armor instead? like i would legit buy this item instead of sunfirecape have it had armor and replaced that pickaxe for chain Vest

SO, Reduce the price to 2800 (considering how Tank items are ALREADY EXPENSIVE) gives 700 health 60 armor a Slow passive, same rules applied to ranged and melee. and you get the item of the season right there

Ranged champion should not get the movement speed steal.

Maybe a plain 15% ms slow.

A few people are suggesting that it should become a melee only weapon. I would tend to agree, however I do like it when players make an off-build. I'm reducing the ranged attack MS steal from 15% to 10%.

I think the big issue with Frozen Mallet is just the lack of offensive stats, it needs more AD to be an item worth building.

The other problem is it is not gold efficient without it's passive. That's a huge turn off for an item, especially when it's not even a tank killing item.

The solution is relatively simple though. just increase AD by 10. Adding 360 gold value and also giving it higher offensive stats.

true the AD on it seems a bit low

I think it should be a tank item rather then a bruiser/marksmen item tbh, they have enough items at their disposal. It should give a bit more health, and then the slow should be based on your bonus resistances.

Hmm.

I made a topic more or less to the same effect.

Import Entropy and change its build to item 3134 item 3044 item 1037, remove its active and give it 20% movespeed steal (15% for ranged).

Then remake Mallet into an IAS/OnHit slow/HP item. Bring back Ionic Spark as part of the build path, build changes to Spark and Giant's Belt, and the chain lightning gets upgraded into a blizzard blast that deals magic damage and slows stuff. Would give 'em both unique niches.

With the recent changes to Warmogs, I actually think that Mallet is really underrated and doesn't particularly need any changing. It's useful on a variety of different champs, from Tanks/ Bruisers to Marksmen.

Make it melee only honestly

the cost is only justifiable for champions that get boost from its hp. like vi or shen. decent on jax and shyvana its good for late game when you have more $ qthan u know wut to do w/

I always find that item 3022 item 3044 work very well together. Infact if you have them both on an ADC it's near impossible for someone to get away.

I once failed to communicate that I was ADC in Draft, so I was bot with a Varus... We all decided to just have fun so I bought a Frozen Mallet AND Black Cleaver (post-rework) on Ashe. I could kite the enemy team into oblivion.

I like the idea of an MS steal over a flat out slow, but the ranged version seems too strong, I would say more like 10% MS steal would be better. As for the price, I think it should remain very high, and instead give better stats, like a little more AD (35-40 instead of 30) and a little less HP (600-ish instead of 700). It is supposed to be a very aggressive item, and it just doesn't offer enough damage to be a good offense item, nor enough defense (raw HP is only so good without resists) to really fulfill its role.

how about a 10 Armor and magic resistance to go with the cartoon mallet ?

Delete Mallet, create an ad+hp item to replace it. Slow is meh.

PalPlays1 votes

The slow is REALLY nice on champs without CC (Shyvana).

It's expensive yes but when you're full build it definitely pays off IMO.

I feel like the problem with Frozen Mallet is that it holds a niche that is already done better by item 3143. Why build Frozen Mallet which gives you a negligible amount of more HP and a negligible amount of AD when you can build item 3143 which gives you MUCH more survivability and gives you an on-demand AoE slow without even auto-ing?

Frozen Mallet's is just out-classed by other items in damage, and tankiness.

Want more health and damage? item 3071 Gives way better stats, CDR, More AD, and Armor Pen for your whole team! Much better on AD Bruisers. Want more survivability and CC? item 3143 For the prior enumerated reasons. Want more damage, CC, and Tankines? item 3025 Gives an arguably better CC, more damage on the right champions, and the invaluable CDR and Armor.

Frozen Mallet needs to be better defined in it's role, because there is simply no reason to pick this up right now when everything else does its job better.

For your suggested change, that just makes Frozen Mallet a worse-version of item 3078 that might be good on only on perhaps Olaf who is auto-attack based and benefits from the AD and Health and Move-Speed steal, but not necessarily the sheen procs.

I don't really seeing Frozen Mallet being good unless it is changed to out-class some other item in some category.

Here's an idea for an item that doesn't exist right now in the game and could give tanks more viability in the late-game. Should replace Frozen Mallet:

Battle-Axe of Thorns Build-path: item 1031 and item 1037

Total Cost: 2200 to 2500g (Idk)

Stats: 50 Armor 30 AD Unique Passive: Auto-attacks and single-target spells against enemy champions impale them with sharp thorns, causing them to bleed for 5% of your armor over 3 seconds in magic damage. This effect stacks up to 5 times, and is refreshed when impaled enemies attack you.

An Offensive Alternative to Thornmail, needs to have some AD on it because it deoesn't make sense that you can get an offensive passive when building out of straight tank components. (Difference between this and Thornmail is that Thornmail is REactive while this is PROactive).

You're acting like the item is the only thing you can ever get.

Fmal+Trinity is an age-old combo that gives 1k health, 60 AD, a speed boost+slow now, and the slew of other goodies from Trinity.

Combine that with defensive items, and you're scary offensively even as a tank and tough to kill on top of that.

Its not about the stats it gives; the stats are great. Its about the cost. Improve the stats much more and it becomes slot efficient, making the cost and build path feel a lot less restrictive and pushes it towards being OP, which would lead it to being nerfed, making its current problem worse.

The combine cost is way to restrictive. That is FMal's only problem. The only way Riot will fix it is if its passive ends up being deemed less "toxic."

I say give the passive an internal cooldown. That way combos like iceborn+Fmal can feel better, as skilled play will lead to permaslow, but its not automatic.

coppinslinger2 votes

Clearly Frozen Mallet + Trinity is better than just Frozen Mallet or Just Trinity. However, each in itself is "good enough" such that sinking so much money into the other is not worth when you really need more defensive (or just pure offensive) stats if you are committing to get into melee range. Yes health is good, but you need the resistances to scale into the late-game. Health in itself isn't as effective as health combined with Armor or MR.

That's just my opinion though. I think that Fro Mallet + Tri is too big of a money sink when you can go Tri + Randuins or Tri + Sunfire, etc.

I could be entirely wrong though, I've never really seen Fro + Tri in action so I don't know its actual strength in game. I just believe that 1k health is meaningless if you don't have the resistances to back it up. (ADC's can melt through that in 2 crits, or can just build BotRK to easily counter the health-stacking). It might be amazing when you are ahead as health is the best way to push a lead (as the enemy has no way to burn through it with their lower levels/less items), but, IMO, really bad when behind.

PalPlays1 votes

It would be good on Shyvana, who doesn't have much peel potential.

PalPlays1 votes

Whenever I get this item I do it late-game to replace Warmog's. I think that the stats should stay close to where they are, because they fill a niche. Really the ONLY thing keeping Riot from reducing the cost of this item the danger of giving laners a slow. If that slow is tweaked, then I think that it can be reduced in price safely.

Fredart1 votes

It aint about the stats, its about the slow, its used to help you keep those darn jumpers from getting away.
