For instance, up against a Ryze mid in Nexus Siege, I rush Abyssal because he keeps diving me, and it doesn't even work. I still die in one rotation from him.
Isn't MR supposed to have SOME impact, not ZERO impact?

Rustling Bush1 voteshes about sustain damage and your about burst damage, you got a item with much lower ap then most ap items and stunted your burst potential while he was presumably building what he normally does and become gradually stronger/tankier as the game progress. Ryze doesn't have any crazy mobility, no i-frames or split second dashes, which means you should be able to bind without to much trouble. he also has to get close to actually lock you down so you most likely just got outplayed by someone who was more experienced, if hes running you down under turret when you have a bind.
that being said i think abyssal works best against mitigating burst damage from people like lb and fizz.

his ult has to channel and it telegraph where its going pretty well, why not through out your q/r while its about to finish channeling so that way he won't be able to react when he reaches the other side of the portal.

Nah, Ryze is in a position rn where he is strong all game, but since he's never toooo strong, he's not considered OP.

But you have to consider the fact that ryze did buy ap while u got mr, if he kills u in 1 rotation with ur mr maybe he could have killed u in half of a rotation without mr.

MR is just damage reduction which happens to have a cap on it so when you reach that cap, you're going to need health

Smókéy1 votesYou never specified how the Ryze was building. He could have pen runes and masteries or maybe he built something that nullified mr. Also, while you are building mr to play defensive, his ap is growing as well balancing out the change in defense and offense. If the Ryze already had the lead on you, regardless if it was nexus siege or not, he will continue to dominate you.

junglerboy161 votesBetter solution would be higher AP items to burst him out and Merc treads to help with his snare. Also, MR without health is only a minor help against straight damage (especially if he buys any sort of Pen items), getting a little health behind it will probably help keep you alive more effectively.
Based on your other comments he was playing very aggro with a flash zone so he could juke you during his all-ins, in which case your best bet is to poke him hard from out of his range starting early on before he has items or crystals to get the flash zone. After that point, It just sounds like you're stuck in a really bad matchup (mid-range tanky DPS/burst mage is always gonna beat in immobile poke mage once he gets close enough to cast anything).
Rock MD1 votesAs Lux if you're getting closed in on by Ryze you're not abusing your range well enough.
MR is not supposed to be THE answer. It simply means that the number of criteria Ryze needs to kill you grows. After 2-3 items MR itself is nonexistent but early on the MR provides you with a safety net so that if he doesn't perform his combo perfectly you will be more likely to live.

Ah, I missed that part. Either way MR should help early if either a) he doesn't have a metric ton of mpen or b) you didn't colossally fuck up.
Late-game MR doesn't exist unless you have HP too.
